Amazon - Document Requests Email

Hi y'all,

Recently I got an email from Amazon saying that I have to send things to Amazon via fax. They say they need things like Driver Licence, and utilities bill containing address.

The last time I got this request was when I was buying stuff from Toys'N'Joys Hawaii. That was 10 years ago.

Given this 2016 and fax is so yesterday especially I don't believe this is legit, I decided to ignore it.

Today I got an email saying my account has been closed and any attempt to register new accounts will be closed too. I checked my amazon.com account and indeed, I can't login.

My question to this community is that have anyone ever received any of this email and if you did, what did you do.

Thanks in advance…

Zz

  • You're sure this wasn't phishing email? Maybe your account was hacked and when they couldn't phish you, they changed the password so it looked like the account was closed.

    • Hello,

We are conducting a review of your Amazon account to comply with applicable laws related to commercial transactions. During our review, you will be unable to access your account.

Within 14 days, please send the information listed below by fax. It is important that any information provided is easy to read and marked with the email address registered to your account and reference ID [My Reference ID].

      For [My Name]:
      — Complete residential address.
      — A copy of an unexpired passport or other government-issued identification (for example, driver’s license).
      — Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill (if the address on the passport or government-issued identification is not current).

This person is listed as one of the registered account holders of the account associated with email address: [My Email Address].

To view the fax number and verify that this request is indeed coming from Amazon, please open your web browser and type in the following link: http://www.amazon.com/help/documentrequest. For your security, please do not send these documents via email. The cost of sending this fax will depend on the number of pages you send and the fees charged by your provider.

We will convert your fax to a secure electronic image and send an email within 24 hours confirming receipt. If we do not receive this information, your account may be closed.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact us at [email protected].

      Sincerely,

      Amazon.com

      Best regards,

      Thank you.

      • So did you contact Amazon at that mailbox to ask if the request was genuine, and if so, why?

        • I would do that but I wanted to know if this community has ever received this first.

I don't want to end up like this

        • @burningrage: Well the email domain is amazon.com and presumably Amazon's mail server hasn't been hacked, in which case all is lost. If you are super paranoid you could type the address in instead of cut and paste.

    • It does sound legit when I clicked to that link.

But it's strange I got it but never heard about it before.

what about try to chat with amazon online?

never got any emails likethat and Ive been with Amazon for years.

  • its fake, why would they ask for this stuff? your details have leaked somewhere and scammers are using it.

  • Googling the first sentence of their email brings up a page on their site. So that's a good start. Did you google the fax number?

  • If that email is copied verbatim I'd be a bit concerned, opening the communication with simply "Hello" and no title or name is usually scamming 101…

Conduct some more investigations before you hand over any documents!

    • That's why I am checking in this forum to see if anyone who has an account with Amazon ever received this email.

      • Me, never in well over a decade.

  • My research atm indicates mixed review. Real people did get accounts suspended or disabled but yet many people are ok. When people asked Amazon directly, they confirmed that they did send those messages but could not give any reason why they asked for it.

Will post more once I got more updates. Will send them emails.

  • Never had an email like that and I've been an Amazon.com customer for about 10 years and buy stuff all the time from the USA store, Australian store, German store and UK store (all the same system, same account).

It does look very legit though, especially the bit about telling you to type their URL into your browser rather than click on it.

The key word in the entire email is "commercial". Have you done anything that could be even remotely considered commercial use rather than consumer use? Or put anything in a product review that could be deemed commercial? It may have triggered their software to launch this process to double check you.

I think they are requesting fax because it's point to point secure, especially with sensitive documents, unlike regular email. I've had similar requests from other legit companies outside of Australia, only options given are fax or setting up PGP encryption, swapping keys etc and then using email with my info encrypted.

I have never sold anything nor buy anything in commercial quantity. My purchases from them were simply products for my son (education toys) and electronics such as la crosse battery charger https://www.amazon.com/Crosse-Technology-BC1000-Battery-Char….

I concluded the request was legit but I have no desire to comply with it simply because it goes against every online security principles and I just need to create a new account with different address should I need to buy anything from them (which would be years away given our FX rate).
