how good is this, can it replace tv as display

    • It can if you have enough lamps.

      • +7

Should easily get 3-4 years from the included lamp…
Then another $200 should cover a new lamp and give you another 5-6 years…
People spend way more than $800 on a TV and are happy if it lasts them 8-10 years!

        • +7

I just want my large LCD TV die so I can get a 3D or 4K one, but it is still going strong after 6 years. Not happy it lasts that long.

      • +3

In SmartEco mode, the lamps are rated to 6500 hours - so even if you use it for 4 hours every single day, you'll only need to buy a single new lamp in the next nine years.

        • +7

get out of here with your logic and lack of edgy smartass replies!

        • -1

Are you high? Check your maths

        • I misread.

        • +1

Yeah, I think you mean every 4.45205479452 years.

        • +1

@cowiie: you have problem with his maths?

        • +1

          @gollux: Not enough decimal places.

It was a slightly confusing way to make his point.

        • +1

          @cowiie: his/her maths is sound

    • No reason why not!

      • Heya OzzieMe,

        Super Keen

lol its still in my shopping cart..damn should have just paid for it first

        • Pretty sure there is a few set aside in the office .. watch this space tomorrow am

        • Thanks for the info~~~

        • @luffyex2010:

Comment here once you've got stock! :)

  • No glasses included? They seem to be expensive.

    • +3

Any 144Hz DLP glasses will work, they're quite cheap.

    • +3

It's a DLP projector. You'd have to doublecheck, but it's likely standard DLP-Link 3D glasses.

Third party glasses are less than $20.

      • cool, thanks

  • What's a bulb worth?

The main reason EPSON took over the market was because of the cheap bulbs, and arguably cheap projectors.

    • +2

Lamps are cheap - they retail at Officeworks for $199 - http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/benq-th681-…

    • +4

The bulb cost isn't important - in SmartEco mode, the lamps are rated to 6500 hours - so even if you use it for 4 hours every single day, you'll only need to buy a single new lamp in the next nine years.
      It's a complete none-issue.

      • +2

Agreed. No way you won't want to upgrade in the next 9 years, anyway.

      • +2

And you're still wrong. 4.5 years.

        • +1

          4.452054794520548 years

        • +3

          @fchis:
I see his point though is first lamp it comes with lasts 4.5 years and the next lamp lasts another 4.5 years.

        • +1

          @Shonky: :)

        • 4.5 years from the included lamp.
+ 4.5 years from the only lamp you buy in the next nine years.
= One lamp bought, in the next nine years.

          :-)

  • Also these new globes are capable of 6500 hours - even at 8 hours a day that's nearly 3 years and most people dont use these anywhere near that much!! :)

  • In terms of replacing a TV, how far away must the projector be from the wall? Also, how large is the projected screen and what is the recommended viewing distance for optimal quality? Thank you!

  • How good is this to play movies or watch stuff during the day?

    • see below post from imagetech - all good! :)

  • 2 questions

    1. Can anyone confirm if it can project 5 metres? (distance we need in a classroom)

2 How to connect to it wirelessly - will a chrome cast or Apple TV work?

    any clues appreciated…

    • +3
      1. Yes.
      2. Not sure about wireless, but it works for a chrome cast or Apple TV.
    • Hi Sian72,

1/ Yep - sure will - but the size of the screen will be large.

2/ Apple TV or Chromecast will work just fine!

  • +2

I bought the same one (refurbished) a couple of months ago. I have been using it for replacing a TV and I am very happy with it. It has been projected on a 125" screen (about 3m away from the wall) and it does a fantastic job, which could be even bigger if it is put even further.

  • any ability to buy an extended warranty on this?
Would love to get an extra year cover given they are refurbs :)

    • No sorry phreaker - these are refurbished to as new condition, but upgraded warranties are only available as an option on new projectors and panels I am afraid.

  • -3

Considering a "good quantity" of these were broken in under 100 hours usage, good luck getting to the 6500 hour bulb life!

    • +2

Why would you assume they were broken? How do you not know there were used for a "light up the city" show, or lent out for display purposes or tested as part of a review for a magazine or even lent our for a large screen display for gaming conferences?

Refurbished doesnt mean broken … just means they are not brand new in box any more…

      …Just sayin' ;)

      • Refurbished doesnt mean broken … just means they are not brand new in box any more…

means various reasons, broken & not new are two of them sure, as is tested to be fault free. There's no hard definition probably why it's thrown around so much. In various cases "refurbished" may be synonymous with "reconditioned", "remanufactured", "refreshed", "repaired", "recertified", or "like new".

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refurbishment_(electronics)

      • -1

or lent out for display purposes

So now you are saying they are used, not refurbished?

Refurbished implies that parts have been replaced, so yes, if you are being honest, there must have been damage, if only cosmetic.

For example, the difference between a used phone and a refurbished one would be a new case, face and battery.
A refurbished home or office would have new floor covering, paint, and window treatments.
Nowadays it seem real-estate agents are more honest than some other salesmen.

    • -4

Exactly! Something's wrong with these broken and repaired units "in large quantities". If Samsung is selling their flagship 4K TV refurbished in large quantities, you know something is wrong. Maybe a global recall of the model is coming.

      • +2

That's not always the case. TONS of reasons for bulk availability.

Could be part supply issues for warranty repairs, they may have to replace complete sets if there's delays. Manufacturers import new models before they get any spare parts to fix them. Afterwards, they bulk repair and sell as refurbs.

It could be completely new units because the manufacturer overstocked, but they're not allowed to discount new stock due to no-compete deals with retailers. These are more often sold as "damaged box" rather than refurb.

Changed-my-mind returned units can't be resold as "new". They're now refurbs with no repairs done.

Old display units sent back from retailers when the next model comes along. Now refurbs.

For the TV flagships specifically - I'd bet a good percentage of those would be replaced for uneven backlight which ALL LCD TVs have to some extent - but people who pay flagship prices are more picky so they have it replaced and retailers don't complain because they made top dollar. Now they're refurbs with no repairs done.

  • Good projector. I find it's more of a hassle to turn on a projector than a TV though. Also, I can't seem to get my new laptop to project via HDMI without severe stuttering - only works on VGA. So I find it's not really a true replacement for a TV - probably best to have both.
edit: I have a cheap projector - NOT this one.

  • +2

    This is really tempting….

  • Can't find any good reviews online, but this looks like the previous model:

    http://www.projectorcentral.com/benq-th670-projector-review.…

TH 670 is the more general line, for classroom and office as well as home theatre, as opposed to the more home theatre-focused W1070 etc. It lacked the fantastic colour of the W1070, but sounded pretty good overall.

But not the insta-buy the W1070 would be at this price.

Just to make sure everyone know what OP meant by "PLAY" via USB, it only shows image files (based on the product page)
