Samsung Galaxy Note 7 / S7 Edge / S7 - which to get?

Seeing as my Note 4 is having issues with rebooting and lagging heavily and I cannot be without an android while it is sent away, I am debating which phone I should get.

I have been using an iPhone 6 over the last 2 days (Keeping my Note 4 and only using it at night to enter my financial data into my money app) and the size is much more wieldy than the Note 4 so I had started to think the S7 might be a good bet seeing as it will be cheaper.

My thought pattern with the Note 7 was to: Pre-order and get the SD card which I will then sell as I already have a 64G one and don't need that much space as I have cloud storage. I'll then send my Note 4 away for assessment and I'm almost certain it will be replaced as the motherboard/memory is failing. If they replace it, I can then sell that and all the accessories and make some money back to make the $1349 come down well under $1000.

The part I'm not sure on is if the SD card will get that get that much back for me anyway, so could be worth while going with the S7. I'm basically ruling out the S7 Edge unless it goes on sale.

Just wondering if anyone else had any ideas or thoughts?

  • I'm thinking the Note7 is an over glorified S7 Edge with a Pen. I would rather wait a bit more and get the S7 Edge for less than $800 or go for another brand i.e. LG V20, Nexus Sailfish & Nexus Marlin…

    • Yeah that's true, but it also has USB C, so it is more future proof. Although USB C hasn't exactly taken over the phone market as yet, but I imagine it will. Plus it comes with an SD card and seems to only be $100 more.

I wish it went to $800 but I kind of need a new phone within the next 2 weeks and seeing as the Note 5 seems to be $900+ at just about every retailer, it's hard to see the S7/S7 Edge coming down for at least another 8 months.

      • i see the note 7 to be like the s6, ne next gen will be a better refined version of it. You can get a s7 edge for 750 ish right now with the sales. while you won't get one this cheap for the note 7 for a while. Grey stock will come but you'll need to wait a month or so.

For me it was a $1350 note 7
        or
        $750 s7 edge

        differences :
        - New design
        - Larger screen
        - Pen
        - Iris scanner

        not worth it.

        • USB-C would be a big one too.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 for $190. Just saying.

  • I had an S6 edge and have just upgraded to an S7 edge. The difference is incredible - camera, screen, sd card, waterproof, feel, looks, battery life. Honestly, the rest of the family have iPhones (6,6S and 6S+) and this thing makes them all look like toys. The S7 is nice but the edge is definitely worth the little extra, imo.

I'm interested to hear why you think the S7 edge is worth the extra. I'm still on the fence about what I should buy, whether it be the S7/Edge, or wait for the later releases this year.

As I said, it is light-years ahead of the S6 edge and I liked that model. I am blown away by the battery life and screen - everything else I mentioned earlier are winners but those two, for me, make it a stellar upgrade.

It also looks so damn nice in Titanium Silver that it's a shame to use a case. For the first time ever, a Samsung Galaxy makes an iPhone look cheap.

  • Your situation is similar to mine in a sense that if my Note 4 is being repaired under warranty, what phone to use?

I thought about it last night and think Note 7 would be it. My note 4 is super awesome that I don't think I can downgrade.

Having said that my Note 4 has an issue of battery dropping from 15% to suddenly 9% and then zero in 1 minute. Changing the battery didn't really help so it's the phone. Still under warranty.

No lagging or auto-rebooting. Running Marshmallow.

    • I'm lucky in that I could borrow an iPhone 6 of my mum's partner. So I use that as my daily driver then update my android stuff at home at night.

I'm going to order the Note 7 I think. Hopefully they replace my Note 4 otherwise my plan is a bit skewed but ah well.

    iphone 7

  • Easy decision.

If you a medium sized phone (well medium sized for today), get the S7.

You want a slightly larger phone with a curved screen, get the Edge.

You want a slightly larger phone with a curved screen and a stylus, get the Note 7.

I remember the difference between the S5 and Note 5 were massive, now they are much more similar size/screen wise.

seriously get one generation older. dont buy newly released. or xiaomi.

I own an S6 Edge and find the curved edges just distort colours (white becomes blue) and aren't integrated with the software properly (things are juuuuuust over the edge). I would avoid any Edge phone. Get the S7. It's almost a reasonable size and has a one handed mode. The Note 7 has the same processor as the S7 so you aren't getting more raw power. But if you really want Note-specific features like the Pen, I guess that's your option.
