  • I want to buy one of these phones, but am confused on the different types of roms there. Global ROM, International ROM and Chinese ROM. Can anyone please help elaborate on this? I don't want to be rooting the phone or anything just in other words stock as it is from the box.

    • +1

Global and international should be the same I'd imagine. Chinese ROM won't have Google apps like the app store, you'll need to install that yourself. I think the Prime means International though so shouldn't be an issue.

      • +6

The Prime is a name sometimes given to the 3GB/32GB model, as opposed to the 2GB/16GB one.

Most international sellers will chuck an international ROM in, so you should be okay OP.

    • This seller mentions the below:

      Language
Support Multi Language Now!! include Spanish,Russian,German,French,Polish,Portuguese,Italian, etc

      Google Play Store
Yes,built-in google play store,Support google services

So it looks like he will put the global rom on for you.

      • +1

        So it should have english?

      • Re: 4100 mAh battery - NOT REMOVABLE

We lost a phone to Customs recently (AliExpr. should refund)
Ordered 2x, but 1x sent in each of 2x packages/shipments.

The one I rec'd arrived with Battery in phone…
BUT isolated from phone by a removable plastic tab.
(At first, we thought it was dead, as it didn't seem
to charge; all OK after pulling tab)
        [just like w/beer can?]

        Another non-removable battery is LiPo.
Could LiPo be the reason for this phone
        having non-removable battery, sa well?

      • From my experience from gearbest and other Chinese exporters, they have a rom installed dubbed a shop rom. A shop rom comes with google apps installed, but and a very big but you CANNOT get official miui updates, and it may have some useless apps pre installed. It is a bit of a pain but you can install an official global rom without unlocking the bootloader, thus keeping any warranty you may have.

I bought one of these on impulse a few months back and was similarly confused, but have managed to determine the following

China Rom – Xiaomi official ROM for use in China. Can be downloaded from their website. Does not include Google Play store, but this can be installed later

International ROM - Xiaomi official ROM for use outside China. THERE IS NO GLOBAL ROM AVAILABLE YET FOR THIS PHONE, ONLY FOR THE NOTE

Vendor ROM – most vendors install their own customised ROM, however some will change to the official ROM before shipping if you ask them.

Custom ROM – there do not seem to be any widely used custom ROMs yet for this phone, but there are for the NOTE

Overseas version - you can buy overseas versions of this phone. The only difference is that it comes in an English box and all the stickers and manuals are in English. It still comes with the same Chinese vendor ROM (confirmed by vendors)

Mine came with Everbuying’s customised ROM. I set the language to English and everything is in English and works perfectly, including the Play store. The only Chines is some of the ads in the music and video app it came installed with, but I disabled these.
So I plan to stick with this ROM for the time being as it does everything I need . Only concern is that it may have come with Chinse Malware on it , but I can’t find any info on the net that this is the case

The other thing to note is that the bootloader on these is locked, so you need to apply to Xiaomi to get it unlocked. I did this and it took 2 days

      • +3

        That's my worry - malware.

        • +3

Lol, why'd he get down voted?

That's a valid concern and not one I'd be willing to just sweep under the rug and think she'll be right.

        • Get the note and there is tons of custom roms to choose from. I didn't like MIUI much and was worried about the spy thing as well.

        • @daveaus:

I agree, I would have got the note for this very reason if I had researched properly before buying it.

Their models and names are very confusing

      • From what I understand Xiaomi have no released an international version themselves, it's more the sellers modifying them.

    • better to install offical rom yourself in case of any vendor modification.

      offical rom page: http://en.miui.com/download.html

  • This is Redmi 3 Pro with non Full HD 5" screen, better buy Redmi Note 3 Pro than this one.

    • +22

Maybe some people don't care about full HD…? Or would prefer to stick to a 5 inch rather than a 5.5?

I have a 720p Lumia and it is crisp as a fresh apple. I have used 1440p phones and really do not see the apparent life changing difference.

      • I used to think that until I got a 1440p phone

      • If you can't see a difference between 720p and 1440p I seriously recommend getting your eyes checked.

        • +10

Calm down there champ and settle for an eye check yourself. I didn't say I couldn't see the difference between the two. I simply mean the difference is not life changing - which it isn't. Having a 1440p display on a device that sits in your palm simply isn't necessary. I find 720p sufficient for my needs/wallet.

  • Plays Pokémon Go?

    • Wouldn't have an issue playing PoGO, even if its a RAM hog. The prime version comes with 3GB RAM and the 616 should do just fine.

    • +1

If you want cheap Pokemon GO phones, buy a low spec locked phone.
I know it sounds counter intuitive, but so long as it has MORE than 512MB of RAM, it'll run. Quite a few have 700+MB or 900+MB, being advertised as 512MB.

The lower CPU and pixel count means you get about 4~5 hours of play from just the internal battery.
I have a ZTE phone for this purpose.

      • I've been told Pokemon GO needs at least 2GB RAM.

My S5 mini with 1.5GB RAM can't even install it.

        • +1

My ZTE Chat with 800MB of RAM runs without issues.
          Fast load and GPS lock.

        • +1

          @MasterScythe:

Further research indicates it's likely a problem with the devs, restricting it from S5 mini by mistake. Other possibilities include the ram being enough for some phones, but not for the high-ish res screen the S5 mini has, and the S5 mini's GPS being too poor to work well with the game:

@mgowen: Once you install the APK it runs fine.

Don't try and use the playstore.

        • @MasterScythe: Fine is a matter of perspective I think. It plays, but I experience a lot of lag and drops in frames

        • +1

          @quietsarcasm:
No frame drops, no lag, no unexpected quits, no GPS loss.
          ZTE Blade D
          Snapdragon 210
          900mb Ram

Sorry man, don't know what to tell ya….
Maybe you have other applications than GO installed?

        • @MasterScythe: Sorry, meant to reply to mgowen

    I prefer Xiaomi MAX

    • me too. nice and thin in the hand.

    • Got one as well and love it.

    • I'm thinking of getting a max, can back and recent apps buttons be swapped? And best place to buy with global ROM for Google installed?

      • +1

Yes they can be swapped functionality, but the picture/graphic on the capacitive button stays the same. so back would become the three lines and recents < hope this makes sense

  • +3

Just be aware guys ,they are very slow!
It took 13 days to get the phone by DHL.
They don't even update you with the shipping progress.

If you want a fast delivery, try this deal. $1 more but you should be able to receive it within a week.

      • @Fishwhisperer - that deal looks to have expired/ exhausted. I just tried and the coupon code wasn't applied.

        • Better let Monty know. Shoot a PM to the rep Monty listed on that deal and it should be fixed for you.

  • how does this compare to samsung s7

    • +7

This phone is not waterproof. Other than that they both make phone calls, surf the net and take pictures.

      • +44

One tells China your every move, the other tells Korea.

    • +1

There are reviews online comparing Mi5 pro vs Samsung s7. This phone is several generations older than Mi5 pro so do not expect too much from it.

  • I am about to recommend this phone to a friend moving to Europe
What 4G bands should I be aware of?
Any bad sides to this phone?
    Thanks brains trust

    • Doesn't have all the 4g Bands for europe so some parts would be 3g

      • roger that, thanks for reply friend :)

  • -3

    Not USB Type-C charger. Pity.

    • +6

      indeed for this price..

    • +2

Also no quad hd liquid 3dtouch Holo display. Very disappointing.

  • Hi guys question please. When setting up the phone for the first time, is sydney australia available to choose from from the locale (country). I was told that there ia only a limited number of cities / countries available and i think this is what is used to determine the local timezone. Please correct me if im wrong. And apologise if this was ever asked in previous posts. Thanks.

    • For the Note 3 Pro with Global ROM there was no option for Australia as the location. I just picked Hong Kong as I am in Perth but there is a setting that allows you to use the phone network server time that should work for you in Sydney?

      • Thanks Maltopia. Will try it out when the phone arrived.

  • +1

Fwiw the 3s pro is a similar price to this. and seems to be slightly bit better. From what I've read the 3s will also get a global rom soon too because it's being released in India and Malaysia.

The 3s uses a similar octacore SoC (snapdragon 430, but despite lower number is better than s616), it has benefits of using better gpu, better modem, quick charging 3.0 and dual image sensor processor for better photos. The 3s also uses faster emmc 5.1 storage (27 sec boot time vs 34 seconds of the 3pro) https://youtu.be/dfi-uBEK06s

In general the 3s performs slightly better. Though there's not much between the two, mainly gaming is where you get a significant benefit.

The 3s also comes with marshmallow.

I think the extra few bucks for the 3s is worth it over the 3pro.

  • I bought one of these and it is awesome but I dropped it and cracked the bottom of the screen within the first 2 weeks of having it. Very disappointing but completely my fault. Only the second time I've ever damaged a smartphone screen in the 6 years I've been using them.

    • XiaoMi has the accidental insurance in china.
You pay 15 dollars for covering all accidental damages for a year. (include water damage)

  • whats better this or redmi note 3 pro ?

    • -1

note, better and bigger screen and better battery

      • Better battery? Hmm they use the same size battery but the refmi 3 has smaller screen with less pixels to push around. I know in pcmark the Redmi 3 scores not quite 14 hours in the battery benchmark, so the note 3 is better than that? I know many people get 7-8 hours screen on time with the note 3. The best phone I've seen according to battery benchmark is the Redmi 3s, 18 hours it managed on pcmark.

  • +2

the note 3 pro…has a bigger screen and faster processor
also now has an official global rom which supports google store and OTA updates

  • there is Xioami Redmi 3 version now with band 28 support for our 4G, it was listed a few days ago on OzB …… might be worth the research to see which version they ship now with international ROM.

    • There's a band 28 5.5" Redmi 3 Note Special Edition: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/259725 . Haven't seen a band 28 of the 5" Redmi 3 series as yet.

      • +1

$355 - depends how desperate you are. At that price I can think of may other phones right?

  • +1

Yeah I've found band 28 doesn't make a huge difference for me. Still get fast speeds and good coverage without it.

  • Anyone got theirs yet?

Picked this up to replace wife's iPhone4s (yep it was due)

    • It's delivered from China, so you should expect 3-4 weeks for shipping

      • Yeah I know but I did the DHL option. Should still be more patient :)

        • got it yesterday - wife loves it

  • 'Sorry, this item is no longer available' 。・゚・(ノД`)・゚・。 whyyyyyyyyyyy

    • nevermind, seems to be working again!

  • Here's the grey 3GB/32Gb version for UK$137 or ~AUD$233

Using 10% off with ebay coupon brings it to ~AUD$210.

  • ordered phone on thursday..received yesterday in Sydney via DHL..

  • How does the camera on this compare to the iPhone 5s?

  • how longs the shipping to sydney?

  • Hi guys,
Does it have notification light feature? whenever you've got a missed call, incoming SMS, etc?
If someone could confirm, that would be great! Thanks in advance
