Wishing to Buy USA Dollars

Hi, may I have some suggestions as where to purchase American dollars at a good exchange rate in Melbourne area or north western suburbs. Thank you.

Withdraw in USD country ATM with Citibank card with no fees.

    • how do Citibank exchange rates compare with interbank rates at the time of withdrawal?

      • Citibank use the Visa rates. While I'm not sure what the interbank rates would be less fees, once you add the fees on, they won't be nearly as competitive as Citibank/Visa rates.

  • For cash exchange try the money exchange booths on Swanston St in the CBD. They're mostly between Flinders and Collins but there's a few more between Collins and Bourke.

Each booth will vary in rates so shop around first. They generally don't charge any additional fees but their actual fees are loaded into the exchange rates. I bought some Euros yesterday at 0.680 when interbank rates were around 0.687.

For exchange i always recommend UAE Exchange.
I find they have the best exchange rate in all of melbourne CBD.

Check online for exchange rate at http://www.travelex.com.au/ . The exchange rate was much better when I pre-purchased online (pick up in store).

  • Thanks for all the advice. I intend to withdraw from ATM with Citibank card whilst in the USA but I wanted to take some smaller notes for tipping at the airport in case we get help with luggage etc and I will be in a wheelchair.

    • Fair enough.

Look, if you're only looking to transfer a small amount prior, if you don't work in the city, it's probably easier to find somewhere local. Don't have to waste time travelling/paying for petrol/transport.

    • arrive at airport
      go to atm and withdraw
      buy water to get change
      tip away

  • Airport ATMs are usually the most expensive to use in terms of fees.
