One-way or return flight as the better option?

Going to the uk for up to 2yrs
Is it better getting a one-way or looking for a return flight (ill be returning within a year to visit home anyway)

Has anyone else been in this situation?

thanks

  • For trips under 12 months it's mostly cheaper to book return.

A lot of airlines and booking sites don't sell flights beyond 12 months from today. So from that point of view one way may be your only option?

When are you looking to go and when do you want to come back?

Usually the best deals can be had if you're flexible with dates.

If you don't need to fly in peak season it is possible to get to Europe for $400 one way. I posted such a deal before…

Are you looking to fly from South East Queensland?

    • thanks for replying.

I know i will return from the UK within 12 months to visit/holiday then go back. Im looking to go anytime between mid Sept - mid Oct

      and yes, fly from Brisbane.

wow, that submission looked amazing. are you in the know with airline specials or just find out about them quick?

      • If I were you I would be really tempted to book this $900 deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/260514

And it's available for Early October, with heaps of dates when you could come back in 2017, including April and May.

It's from Melbourne so it's more cumbersome but it's hard to argue with that price. It's not the best airline but it's not a budget airline either.

If you booked that then you could just wait for a Tiger or Jetstar sale and pick up something cheap and one-way from BNE or OOL to MEL. Tiger currently has $79 BNE to MEL in mid October but you'd need to add $20 for your luggage.

I don't have any insider knowledge but I do keep an eye on the sales and the OzBargain deals.

  • It depends on your Visa situation for UK, sometimes Visa states you must have proof of funds and return journey also sometimes airlines won't let you board flight if they are concerned you will not be let into country you are going to, as they get a fine if you are rejected, this can be sorted out by buying a refundable one way ticket out of country and then refunding it once in

    • On a tier 5 youth visa. I'll be ok with a one way ticket.

Almost always better to get a return ticket.
It smoothes the way with immigration, you can change the return dates to suit, and it is often cheaper.

When I went nearly two years ago I bought a one-way ticket with Royal Brunei for $700 which was great as it also included 35kg luggage.

I think if you know the exact dates that you will return, it will probably be cheaper. But just play around with the flight comparison sites and see what the difference between one-way vs return, usually return is a couple of hundred cheaper
