Help with Middle Name in Birth Certificate NSW

Hello, we just brought our little princess home from hospital.
I am little bit confuse regarding, how to put middle name in birth certificate.

As Indian origin, we have our father name as middle name.

For Example:
Marry Peter Smith
FirstName(Mary) FatherName/MiddleName(Peter) FamilyName(Smith)

While applying for birth certificate, they have option for "Family Name", "First given name" and "Other given name(s)".

Not sure where should i put middle name ?

which option is correct for NSW Birth Certificate:

Option 1:
"Family Name" : Smith
"First given name" : Mary Peter

Option 2:
"Family Name" : Smith
"First given name" : Mary
"Other given name(s)": Peter

OR

Option 3:
"Family Name" : Smith
"First given name" : Mary
"Other given name(s)": Mary Peter

I would appreciate any help on this.
Thanks.

Second option is the correct one.

Yes, but I don't think you should put "Peter" as the middle-name even if it's the father's given name.

      Go with Danger.
Then the kid can say "Don't worry, danger is my middle-name" before rescuing a koala from a flood

    Option 2 is correct.

  • Sorry. Too slow

So glad you asked, my Dad was drunk when he did mine (names changed to save identity) but I'm officially called John Doe Smith Smith :(

First given name means only the first given name. "Other" means something different or distinct from what was already mentioned. sooo option 2

  • Option 2 would be correct. As an explanation:

1 - Would be right if you wanted her to be called 'Mary-Peter' all the time - ie Mary-Sue, Billy-Bob, John-Paul etc

3 - Would be right if you wanted her official name to be 'Mary Mary Peter Smith'

    Option 2:
    "Family Name" : OzBargain
    "First given name" : J
    "Other given name(s)": V

And in the father/mother "occupation" field you can be creative. According to my third child's birth certificate I am an astronaut.

    • astronaut! Hahahahaha!

      Option 2:

        "First given name" : JV
"Other given name(s)": Where's the Bargain?

I agree that the second option is the right format.
Also consider how closely you want to follow the naming customs. (Disregard this if you're not planning to stay long term.) In Australia it's much more common for all the given names to match the person's gender. I.e. she might get teased for having a boy's name on the rare occasions that her middle name is revealed. You might consider changing it just a little to make it more feminine, e.g. Peta or Petra (two female equivalents of Peter in English). If you insist on the masculine spelling, it'll be fine, the government will let you give her the middle name "Peter" (you just have to hope it doesn't come up too often).

Swapped gender names or gender neutral names are becoming a bit more common I think.

Also I never even knew any of my friends' middle names growing up, I doubt it'll come up

    • I think that's an excellent idea.

    • I actually think that they should follow naming customs! Why not? We're living in a more culturally inclusive society and I happen to know lot's of Ashley's of both genders.

It's a shame that you'd advocate for a name variation on the basis of them staying here longer.

  • Do they have a Hindi version?

    • Hindi ??

      • yeh … right… good one hardya

          no speaka the Hindi?

  • I don't think you should have any part of your princesses name as Peter……but then again ?

My sister applied for her birth certificate a few years ago, only to discover she doesn't have a surname. lol

Wow - that would have made getting a passport a lot of fun!

      • your parents should have thought twice before naming her Madonna

  • My birth certificate lists a totally different christian name to the one I grew up with. It's such a hassle when getting a license, passport, married or buying property.

    • You can always register to change it

  • Pretty sure they didn't ask for opinions on breaking their culture. Just saying :) chances are the average Australian won't know if it's a boy or girls name if the middle name was ever to come up :)

  • I dont have a middle name, I guess this would also solve your problem as well

btw grats on the new family member!
