Is Window Tinting Worthwhile? Who to Go With?

Does anyone have their car tinted? We will have 2 little kids in the back and the sun often gets in their eyes. Do you think tinting our windows would provide enough sun protection? We are not keen on getting those car window sox things or those shades that stick on the window as they look quite ordinary.

Do you recommend anywhere that will do a good tinting job at a competitive price?

We have a 4WD - what price can I expect?

Yes, recommended. There's a noticeable heat difference between tinted and untinted cars (from my experience)

Call around a few places and check prices. Double check legalities for your state as well. In WA it's legal to have 20% on the back windows and rear windscreen, 35% on front windows.

That's not actually what was asked.
Getting sun in eyes will not be prevented by tinting…
The glare will be reduced, but you'll still have whiny kids complaining about having the sun in their eyes!

The only option that will resolve the issue is to put up some sort of shade on the window…

        • I've got the $2 suction cup screens for my kids…
Cheaper than a can of spraypaint or goggles

      • There is another option - get rid of the kids!

You can't just put them back to where they came from.
          That's not how it works!

    • Do you have any contacts? Looking at getting two cars done (one needs existing tint removed, the other has no tint and needs a clean).

        Nah not really :/

I know the Perth Beer Economy page has a few tinters on there that will do it for booze :P

  • how much does one pay for tinting/?

    • $250-$350

Likely about $150-$200 for a backyard job

  • I don't have kids aspect.

Price is one thing quality is another.

For example an option is visit Supercheap Auto to buy the roll of tint you like. Put an advertisement on Airtasker/Gumtree or whatever for a random stranger to do the job.

More than a dozen of my family's cars have been professionally tinted in the past. Some of the car tints lasted fine for 5 years, some lasted fine for 10 years. Where the tint starts to bubble and come off the glass is those rear window demister heating elements. The installers hate to work on rear windscreens which have other devices stuck on them so quotes can vary extremely.

There's no such thing as a certified window tinter so small operators can be as good or better than a chain. To be safe get quotes from everybody and ask friends about their reputation. Otherwise find out who the car dealerships use and they will be a safe bet since they have experience. Find an operator who's proud about their work and provides a guarantee. If they do a bad job you want them to be OK with you to come back to get it fixed.

  • Tint is great, I don't understand people that don't have it.

For kids though tint alone isn't sufficient you really need both tint and the socks.

    • I dont have tints on my 2 front doors. Car came that way but I never really liked them at night. It kinda hard to see at night.

My uncle recently wanted his front tints removed for this reason.

I used to get 35% on every car without fail but im the type of guy who waits for the guy to steer into the corner then just rely on their blinker to enter an intersection.

recently I noticed that hardly any truck drivers have tinted windows. They could be onto something considering some will drive 16+ hours a day.

  • I went through groupon and done a 35% tint for about $130~. They did a great job. But this was for NSW.

  • I had my Sedan done @ www.cartint.net.au (Ringwood) for about 300$ (in 2014) if my memory serves it right. This business is run by an old chap who did a great job and was patient enough to explain the process as he was doing the work. He doesn't use any fancy machines that other cheap tint works use, everything is done manually. Usually he is very busy and getting an appointment might be a little tricky as he doesn't accept all jobs.

I am in no way affiliated to this business, just a happy customer !

  • Check online reviews. Found a good local one here in Melbourne Eastern subs.

  • We had ours tinted, I wouldn't spend the money again on tinting, difference is marginal for the $300ish it cost. Definitely won't make enough of a difference for the kids. You'd still need something else, whether it be windows sock or sunglasses.

  • I think it makes a huge difference on cabin temp.in qld in summer.
Just get the darkest 'legal' tint
Find the best company and pay their price, cheapest if you only get it done once

Depends on where you live. I live up in Darwin and went to the extent of searching the only tint shop that does saint gobain (solargard) tint (guaranteed UV protection and all the extra jazz) and paid a little over $300 bucks for a good quality tint on all 4 windows and a band on the windshield - with a warranty of 20 years (absolutely no off the books shite). It was a very good decision and given the heat up here, I see so many tints peeling off due to a poor job.

  • I'm in Canberra and still definitely find it worthwhile. It stays very sunny over winter here and gets surprisingly hot behind glass (outside of a very different matter).

It also makes it much harder to break into the car (through the window at least). The tinting film we had applied acts almost like the lamination on a front windscreen and holds all the pieces of glass together when it breaks. To get access, you need to cut through the film as well (which is surprisingly tough - especially the metal ones).

Whatever you do, don't try and do it yourself (if you care about the finish). Unless you really know what you're doing or have incredible luck, it will look bloody terrible.
