Android TV Box - Which Are The Best Quality?

Hay All,

Keen to buy a decent Android TV box. Purchased one of the cheap no brand ones and its slow, stuttery & poor quality. Dont mind spending some money but keen to get one that's higher quality. Keen for :-

4k
Good remote
Fast machine
Upgradable

No interest in games, purely for TV / Video content :)

  • Aldi TVBox is good

  • I just got the Tanix TX5 S905X based box which speed wise is great, Plex runs well Kodi appears to keep crashing a bit and the newer firmware seems to still have a few bugs.

I've also ordered the Mini M8S which should be delivered this week hopefully which I will test (S905 based)

I'd be tempted to try a new S912 based box but scared since they are a newer model and they are much more expensive.

Part of the answer probably depends if you want Chinese models, using for Kodi / Plex or just standalone etc.

For better official firmware updates I would consider Ugoos, Zidoo or even Beelink have been updating firmwares. I'm still waiting a firmware fix for my Tronsmart optical port after 2 years which they keep promising.

I'd certainly recommend getting one with 2GB of ram.

    • Thanks for this.

Hmmmm, interesting. Its the Beelink that I've purchased and not impressed. Slow, laggy and doesnt seem to handle 1080 video well… also the remote is very average. Maybe I need to update the firmware before I bin it…

      Thanks for the tips :)

      • Which model beelink - if its the X2 (Allwinner H3 chipset) then it's basically a slow box:)

    • Hi Voldex,

Looks like you're quite experienced with boxes. ;)

I'm thinking of getting either the Beelink S905 based box, or the Mini M8S. Can you please recommend one for me. I'm stuck between the two. Don't want to spend more than AUD $70.

I plan on running Kodi with files streamed from my NAS. Would be good if I could connect a USB DVB-T device, but not sure how do-able it would be, worst case I'll just connect the tuner to my NAS and stream TV to the box/Kodi.

      Thanks

    • I just bought the Beelink GT1 from eBay. Couldn't resist the great price and S912 chipset.

      • My workmate bought that one, great specs and good price:)

It has a nice metal case, feels really solid. Beelink are making more of a name for themselves so you should see reasonably good fimrware updates if they are required.

  • Nvidia shield TV or it might be worth checking out apple TV 4 (I think) if your that way inclined.

    • Thank you. The Shield could be OK but not an Apple TV. Dont want to live in Apple's walled in world.

  • I'm not fussy, but my Minix Neo x8 is amazing. Only $150

    • This one looks great. More what I think I was after. You like it ?

      • Using it right now. Netflix, SBS on demand, iview, vlc, youtube- all running great even with my awful internet connection :)

  • happy with mx4 on teh cheap.

  • I dont have one, but I guess the continous support/updates from the manufacturer is very important.
