Cheap Pet Insurance for 3 Months old Puppy

Hi Fellow ozbargainers,

Do anyone have any recommendations for pet insurance for 3 months old puppy? Is there terms and conditions I should be aware of when choosing the insurance?

Thanks you!

Hopefully someone can come forward with more comprehensive information, but from previous research (cats), pet insurance is a bit of a con as a lot of stuff is not covered and that you would be better off putting what you'd spend on the premium in a separate account.

Seriously, pet insurance? If you need this, you shouldn't have an animal.

    • pragmatic preparation for the care of a pet?
what's point are you trying to make?

If you can't afford to pay for a vet, then don't get a pet.

orrrrrr, they can afford it but they also want to save money by having insurance cover surgeries?
don't buy a car if you can't afford to replace it outright?
don't buy a house if you can't afford to build a new one?

what the hell is your logic?

          @joshykins:

100% don't buy a car if you can't afford to buy it outright. It makes no sense to get a loan on a car you can't afford.

Obviously a house is difference because you have (generally) equity growth.

My logic is that if you require insurance because it is likely that you can't afford to pay for vet treatment on an animal, then don't buy an animal, you can't afford to keep it.

        • @thorton82:

          i said replace it outright.
you are making no headway. as valiant as your self righteousness might be, you are still sounding stupid and arrogant.
why are you shaming people for buying insurance?

        • Well if you need to replace your pet it will only cost you about 1-2 years premium vs 10 years for your car

Bad jokes aside 99.9% of the time you will not save money with pet insurance
Average cost to insure for one year is about $600 and you can only get 80% back
10 year lifetime = 6000 spent on premiums + 20% of any expenses

Not a fan of exclusions so we just keep 5k set aside in a savings account

        • I buy car insurance…

@joshykins: I'm not shaming anyone (or launching personal attacks joshykins). I am stating that pet insurance is a stupid idea, and if you financially feel that you need it, you shouldn't have a pet.

        • @thorton82:

because being responsible and planning for the future is signs of someone being a bad pet owner.
there are heaps of people who cant afford the pets they have , and you are trying to make people who are willing to look at insuring their pets health look as being unsuitable owners ?

        • @thorton82: you have got to be trolling

My wife did a lot of research and was most impressed with these guys: http://www.petinsuranceaustralia.com.au/ (am i allowed to post links?)

but of course it's always a gamble. never know how any insurer will try to avoid honouring payments.

most people suggest creating your own pet fund. put the money you'd otherwise have paid an insurer into an account and let that grow. Use when needed.

  • I have my two Shiba Inus insured with Bow Wow Meow. Fortunately I haven't had to use them yet.

  • Most of the 'normal' medical expenses are not covered by the insurance, e.g. desexing, vaccinations, flea/worm control, dental care…
Also some companies put special exclusions on certain breed of dogs, e.g. back/spinal problem of a dachshund is an automatic pre-existing condition.
Just put some money away every month/week to set up your own emergency fund, and spend your money on good quality dog food.

Seriously, why not just feed them scraps off the table and save yourself some money. It's just a dog.

      • Mate show some love. The furbaby will become part of the family.

And what food is better than the food I eat? Show me a dog that doesn't love hotdogs and pizza.

        • @thorton82: and by hotdogs, I mean Hotdog's Late Night Quiz.
