Worth buying a tablet duty free?

Morning all,

Currently on holiday in Hong Kong and wondering if it's worth buying a tablet duty free on my return?

I was thinking a $400 band tablet from say Samsung.

Not sure on airport prices but my point of comparison would be against a retailer like JB Hi-Fi.

Thanks.

  • Why dont you just buy in Australia and claim TRS to way to Hong Kong?

I think it's too late for this trip, he's already overseas.

No. Shop around and wait for a big sale on at places like HN, Goog guys, JB Hifi. at least you can take it back to the store if you have problems. I priced some camera's and phones when I went through duty free a couple of weeks ago. The saving weren't that good really

This. Duty free for electronics in general seems to be a con.

Yeah, if duty free electronics were ever a great deal, then it was certainly prior to the advent of online shopping…

  • The price at Duty Free shops at the airport on the way back into Australia is not cheap at all. In some cases, the tax-free price is the same or more expensive than that in the retail shops like JB.

Since you're already in HK, why don't you get it from there instead?

  • No

  • To buy in HK, you have to add the cost of credit card surcharge, and you'll need to buy an adapter for the charger. Plus the possibility of warranty problem, it's better to buy in Oz.

HOWEVER… buy the tablet cases in Hong Kong…much cheaper and more variety.

  • Thank you all for the feedback!
