Read The Australian, The Advertiser and World Newspapers at Home for FREE! (SA Only)

400

The future of newspaper reading has arrived on your computer!

Thanks to SA’s public libraries, anyone with an SA public library card can now access FULL ‘page-by-page turning’ electronic versions of the Australian and the Advertiser for FREE using their home computer (or anywhere with an internet connection).

These are just two of the newspapers freely available on the PressDisplay online resource ( http://www.pressdisplay.com ) … there are over 1000 other FULL version titles to choose from (including those in other different languages) for example:

  • The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post (US)
  • The Guardian (UK)
  • Le Figaro (France)
  • Shanghai Daily (China)
  • Times of India (India)
    … and many, many more!

To get an idea of the reading experience, visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEun_HO7kTE

So how can you get access?

1) You need to be a member of your local SA public library and have your library card handy (joining up is so easy and takes only minutes)

2) Visit http://www.libraries.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=213 and select your library from the drop down menu

3) A new page will open. Enter your member number in the BARCODE field and click ‘Sign in’. (note: your member number starts with an ‘x’ followed by 10 digits)

4) Hover over ‘Select title’ at the top of the page on the right hand side to select your newspaper

5) Enjoy your read!

For more information, visit www.libraries.sa.gov.au or contact your local SA public library.

PressDisplay is also available to all Victorian residents who register (for free) with the State Library of Victoria: http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/about/using/register/index.html

    • MMmmmm my card is generating errors - yet I can log into the catalogue and it says nothing about my card being expired. :(

      • The SLV has a silly policy where you have to renew your membership every two years (used to be one year) to get full access to library services, so that might be the problem. It's annoying, but a quick call to them to confirm your details should be enough to restore access to the databases. :)

        • I only registered my card late last year :(

          • @MiCCAS: if you dodnt give them your adress which most people dont, it wont work. i had that problem and got it fixed. you need to be a resident of vic to get the offer, so thats why.

  • Hey that's cool. So Victorians can access it too for free…and save a couple of bucks every week. Gotta love it!

  • Looks good, will check out :)

  • wow - thanks heaps :-)

  • Thank You :)

Also available to QLD residents through the State Library of Queensland

    http://library.pressdisplay.com.ezproxy.slq.qld.gov.au/press…

  • Very nice offer for those of you in SA (and Vic, QLD)… PressReader is not only available for both PC & Mac, but there is also a version out for the iPhone and iPad if you have one of those devices too. Works well!

  • Great post. However I notice you can read those papers without being a library member as well. It did not even ask you to log in or anything.

    • you can read the 1st page if you don't login.

edit: yeah it actually works if you click through the SA library page… cool.

      • how?

        • just select adelaide city council library and click go. a new page should open and you should be able to browse the contents directly. if it shows you a login page instead, go back and try again… it's kinda fluke but i tried it again and works. ?_?

          • @iSamurai: just tried it, you can type in any 10 digit # after the x and ti will work!

          • @iSamurai: edit:

I think the reason it works is because I'm using the internet connection from my uni. Most unis would have PressDisplay linked or catalogued on their website and most students wouldn't know that.

…and i guess you can get it free too with a state library card anyhow for non uni students.

  • This is an awesome app on the iPad! TheMatrix is right too, I didn't have to log in to get it, just subscribed to get my paper delivered automatically, fantastic!

  • thanks a lot.

  • Awesome, thanks trebora. :)

  • Also available for ACT library card holders. http://www.library.act.gov.au/find/read/news
been using it for over a year now. Really helped me in some of my assignmennts

  • Would be very nice if they used something like seadragon (http://www.seadragon.com/) to display the papers.
