AmEx card spend condition change - only for applying directly, NOT referral application

I have just noticed that the spend to qualify for the bonus has changed for the Amex Essential Card, if applying directly. But not via referral. This must have happened very recently. It may affect other Amex cards as well. Please mention if you know which other Amex cards are also affected.

Previously, only the bonus differs, whether applying directly or via referral. But the spend condition is the same. E.g for Amex Essential

  • Bonus $50 applying directly, $75 via referral.
  • Same spend condition : $500 within the first 2 months of Card Membership

But now, with the change made to Essential Card.

  • For applying directly:

    Receive a $50 credit when you apply online, are approved and spend $750 on your new Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership

  • Using referral link, the spend condition remains the same as before:

    Receive a $75 credit when you apply through this page, are approved and spend $500 on your new Card within the first 2 months of Card Membership.

Sugestion for those applying via referral link in the near future:

  • it is advisable to take note of what your referral page says. Preferably, take a screendump of it. Just in case Amex changes the referral spend to match what is on the website page, in coming days/weeks. That way, you will have evidence of the spend condition you signed up for. And if Amex got mixed up and apply the new spend condition to you, you can contact them and have it fixed.

Note: This does not affect the Qantas Discovery Card. I do not know about other cards.
