How Was Your Experience Flying with Etihad Airways?

Hi all,

I am planning an overseas trip at the end of this year with my wife and 2 kids. So far, I have got some good fares from Etihad Airways. I have flown with Emirates earlier and was happy with the overall experience of it, but I have no idea about Etihad and have no friends who have traveled with them.

That brings me to my most trusted community. I am just guessing that they would be similar to Emirates/Qatar. If anyone has ever flown with them, could you please give your opinion on the airline? We will be travelling the normal economy class.

TIA.

They are good. I'm in there platnium elite tier of frequent flyer.

Would say on par with emirates in Economy and business, but far superior in First Class.

Sign up to their frequent flyer program and u get some basic benefits like additional luggage etc.
Very good reward redemption rate, from memory i usually got 2x the value from ff points on etihad then i receive from Qantas, in value per point.

  • A-MAZING
I've flown Economy and First with them, each time I could not fault them.
I have Etihad Gold, and i dont have the biggest brand loyalty but i do to them.

They have been rated in the top ten for many years.

Not a great review… particular if seat size/space is important you you, and customer service, and food… lol.

3/4/3 seating on a 777 is very very squishy.

    • This is squishier then emirates A380, but the same as Emirates 777,

But Etihad now also runs an A380, so that should be "non-squishy"

  • Etihad is just a level above everyone else.

  • Have flown long haul with both Etihad and Qatar - both outstanding service!

Flew long haul with them and wasn't too happy. Small seats, average service, average food. They give you one alcoholic drink only. Maybe 2 if you ask very politely, but that's it. And they told me off for bringing my own chips and beers on board.

  • Assuming you're talking about economy here. I'd say of the big 3 middle east carriers, personal ranking for economy would be QR > EY > EK. Of course depends on the aircraft, out of MEL EY fly both the A380 and 777, definitely pick the A380 (flight EY461). Cozy, well-designed seat, decent food, ok-for-economy booze, solid service and a great aircraft to fly in. In terms of transit airport, and assuming no lounge access, both DXB and DOH are nicer than AUH imo, but AUH are building a new terminal which should be neat.

  • Been in econ with Etihad and Emirates (Emirates back in 2012, Etihad in Jun16). Emirates was on a A380, Etihad was a A333/A346. Naturally, the A380 was better.

Airport wise, Dubai is a nicer airport to look at.

My partner prefers Emirates, I'm impartial. I'd say to expect an experience less than what Emirates offers, that way, you're expectations going in won't be as high.

  • Wow… Thanks for so many different reviews and info fellas. I am a non alcoholic so I have got that base covered as far as drinks go :)

And yes, going from here we have the A380 but coming back it's the 777. Although I'm thinking we will have the full row to us as we are 4 passengers and with 2 kids (aged 5 and 2),we should have some room for us adults.

So it looks good so far.

  • I don't understand where this myth that Emirates and Etihad are such great airlines comes from? All I've heard from personal correspondence was bad things. OK business and first class differ between airlines, but economy is very similar among the major carriers. The only points I would consider are safety, seats, food, and service. Safety is irrelevant unless you're flying Korean, Garuda, or something budget or obscure. I'm not going to bother looking up seat layouts, but the legroom in Etihad economy didn't seem any more generous to me. The food and service are summed up by the dinner I was served. After waiting aaages for service 6 rows from the back, the air hostess asks me 'chicken, beef, or vegetarian'. I ask for the beef, to which she replies 'we don't have any beef left'. OK then, I'll have the chicken: 'we've run out of that too'… Well why didn't you just tell me in the first place, are you expecting the next 20 passengers to ask for the vegetarian option?!?!?! Then I was served the most tasteless, soggy, unidentifiable noodle dish - without a doubt the worst food I ever had on a plane. Her unapologetic attitude only made it worse. OK, the service will vary greatly from crew to crew but I certainly didn't notice any good service on the other 3 sectors.

At the end of the day I will normally fly whatever major carrier is cheapest, but would much, much rather pick similarly priced Thai or Malaysia air, or obviously Qantas/virgin if possible. Given that the UAE airlines get their fuel for free and bring an enormous number of transiters to their city, its a wonder they cost so much anyway.

  • Only flew with them once, from the Gulf to JFK, 13+ hours, not a single negative. Would be more than happy to fly with them again.

  • I've flown with them to Europe and wasn't impressed. Each of my flights were overbooked and they tried to bump me. Customer service was rubbish; on my first flight I asked 4 times for an extra blanket (they were handing them out to others) before I gave up and the guy next to me offered his. Food was average. I had a 20 hour layover and asked for my luggage not to be transferred on but it was. At the airport for another leg the man at the counter was incredibly rude, my friend and I were sat 8 rows apart and her screen didn't work the entire flight. Seats were ok but I wouldn't voluntarily fly with them again. I was also never credited the status credits for my Velocity account as they 'couldn't prove I was on the plane'…

  • Flew to Europe this June with Etihad, Lovely aircraft, good service, decent food & real cutlery! i would fly with them again for sure!
