Luxury Watch - Average Discount from Jeweller

Hi,

Graduating from my MBA and turning 30 at the end of the year, girlfriend is looking for a gift.

I'm particularly interested in the Baume & Mercier - Clifton 10278.

Anyone got an idea on how much jewellers tend to discount?

Thanks!

I think it depends on brand, but I bought a Tissot Automatic recently, and got 20% off. I just went around to a few jewelers that sell it and asked them how much they would sell it to me for, and pretty well all would give it to me for 20% off. Could be worth doing the same if there are multiple stores which stock your watch (or at least stock the brand).

    • yeah 20% seems about the norm from what i've read - thankd for your info :)

There are a couple stores which stock B&M… see how i go!

  • Hi. Am I able to ask how much they have quoted you for the watch? I also looking at getting a watch and would start having a look around soon. That one looks really good :)

sure! the three places i've called have advised retail price is $6600, interestingly they've specifically stated 'retail' in their answer.

So i'm assuming that they will discount when you go in to talk to them :)

HK sells watches for cheapest. Been there and rolexs are way cheaper than here- especially if looking at used market. flights are cheap too now. maybe consider a holiday and a watch haha

Unfortunately i can't get away from the office before about 445 today, and i have every intention of doing just that when i do!

However, like thousands of ozbargainers, we like to look to the community for a bit of guidance before we make purchases… I'm simply trying to seek a bit of info from others about what discount they have received in the past.

Nothing like arming yourself with a bit of knowledge before making a purchase #amiright?

      Cheers!

  • looking on that interweb thing, you can get one imported for about US$3200 plus customs of 10% so US$3500 = AU$4700…ish

  • I highly recommend chrono24. Bought several watches ranging between $3000-$10000 from different sellers and never had issues.
If marked as gift customs will release it without duty charge.

    fyi http://www.chrono24.com/en/baumemercier/clifton--id4279702.h…

    • is Chrono24 like a marketplace with different stores/sellers?

yup thats exactly what it is.

as long as the seller accepts paypal and send ships to AU you are good.

also don't agree on the listed price you can usually bring it down by at least few hundred if you haggle enough :)

        • You have to pay GST right?

        • you should but I always ask the seller to mark it as gift, don't send any invoices with it and mark value as $800 this way I've been lucky so far.

On the other hand if you can score $7000 time piece for +/- $3k then even with GST on top of that it's a good deal.
