Do Optus still have epirey dates on their starter packs?

    • +2

Yes, only Vodafone got rid of it years ago.

    • So if I get an optus starter pack, after the expiry, the sim will cease to work?

      • Yep, you need to activate it by the date.

        • Ah okay. So expiry is related to the activation.

I thought it was related to the package selected

Just one more question, can i opt for my prepaid ultimate if I get this?

          Thanks.

        • Sorry, sim will work if activated after expiry date but credit gone, obviously, and yes when activating you can choose which of the three options you want.

    • Feb 1, 2018 expiry. Bought 6 at belmont wa. Heaps left. Thanks op

    • Are we able to easily switch between Optus starter packs and also keep the same number using the SIM Replacement feature? Will the $30 credit still be there after the switch?

  • Cool, been waiting for the 4GX Buzz to come on a good special!

    • I assume 4GX Plus is relatively better and it runs Marshmallow… Currently on special @ Coles for $79 with bonus 3000 flybuys points too.

  • Can't see Skype deal in the attached picture.

    • +2
      • Any idea if this is Australia wide? Catalogue says NSW Metro. Brisbane/Ipswich here.

        • +1

From past experience only local produce specials seemed to vary from state to state.

Time to stock up some skype cards

Optus $30 Starter Kit $10, less than 50%,good! Since kogan provide the Unlimite $16/month, can't get used to the more than $16 monthly cost on mobile communication…

    • +4

In 2016 the amount of data given within any plan is the main player in determining what is a good price or no.

    • -2

Since kogan provide the Unlimite $16.90/month

FTFY. Marketing has gotten to you to think that it's $16 when it's actually closer to $17.

  • Yes! Was waiting for this Optus deal again. Last telco deal at Coles never got any stock. Their customer service promised to order them in for me but never did. I didn't follow up because it wasn't an amazing deal but his time. I am getting me those Optus sims!

PS What would be the cheapest way to port in and out of the same provider? Anything cheaper than $2 start sims?

    • +1

Can't you just use different providers every month? That's what I've been doing for the past 6-7 months

      • Yeah that's what I've been doing. Saving up sims from the same provider and alternative.

The problem is that if I stock up on Optus $30 for $10 (best price point for me because the data is just right), I want to just using these starters instead.

Using $2 sims would make it $12/28 days which is still a bargain but as an oz bargainer I would rather keep the costs down as much as possible.

        • +1

You could get a $2 Coles sim. 1GB and lasts 10 days, so it'd be $12/38 days plus an extra gig.

        • +1
        • @Autonomic:

That's definitely the back up plan. From what I've heard on Ozbargain. Optus to Optus porting takes a long time and fraught with errors because of the need for human intervention.

          Unfortunately Coles uses optus network.

I will have to work out if that hassle is worth it.

        • @chadiwrx:

This might be the cheapest and least hassle. Thanks!

    • Lycamobile have a free sim that they post out to you (for free)

  • 3G modem any good? Been wanting to invest in something like it but not sure if there's any difference between them

    • +2

Get a 4G one if you can

      • Ah yes. Dumb question- but are each of the telco's modems network locked to their SIMs? Or are there generic ones I can get?

        • Vodafone modem is never locked. The one I bought can use any of the sim cards out there.
Not sure about Telstra or Optus.

        • I have the Optus 3G one, and they cane unlocked out of the box.

        • +1

i bought the optus one a few months ago and i've used voda/telstra sims in them as well.

  • Any used the "Huawei Y3II" before?

Seems like a cheap 4G phone for only $79.

  • $44 is great price for 4GX Buzz after redeeming bonus 3000 flybuys points ($15) in this deal. Has been selling for $99. Good feedback from previous deals here.

  • +1

I'm just gonna leave this here for ppl searching at home:

    $24.50 - Huawei E5573 Optus 4G WiFi Modem - Includes 4GB start-up data for use in Australia within 14 days - Offer ends 13/09/16 - Activate before 30/10/16

    • does it include a data sim and is there anyway to merge with the existing $40/month 10gb mobile plan to share that data?

    • +1

Was about to put that too. 4GB makes this a good deal.

Yes, includes data sim and credit for 4GB for 14days usage.

No, can not merge post paid with prepaid.

      • can i substitute a data-sharing in after i am finished with the 4gb sim?

        • +1

Yes, I have done this with my Optus data share sim.

        • +1

Probably. After your credit is used up/expired, you can change your Optus plan to suit you as long as you play along with current Optus rules ( can vary depending on person/mood of staf who is taking care of you, or not :-)

      • This morning, I bough the Optus E5573 4G modem (has expiry of 1/May/2018 on sim and modem box) for $24.50 at Coles . They had stock :) unlike Officeworks which hardly has any in Brisbane stores. NO mention of amount of data included with modem…just says start up data.

Given the catalogue says 4GB and activate BEFORE 30/10/16, does the 1/May/2018 expiry on my pack, mean I can activate it sometime in the next 19 months and still get the 4GB of included data?

Or do I need to activate it BEFORE 30/10/16 to get the 4GB of data?

        • +1

Good question. With all the small print and allowable changes telcos are able/allowed to make, who knows. So far, I have as far as I know, I have got my included data when activated before sim expiry/promotion dates.

That is with all three major telcos. I remember once I did not automatically, but contacting online chat got that sorted out.

Keep your paperwork for reference, including Coles docket and catalogue ad.

    • +1

Have this, used Telstra and other sims no problem

    • +3

Price is currently the same price at office works

      • does that also include 4gb? thanks

        • +1

          Yes

  • How long do the packs last after you activate, 1 month? What's the date you gotta activate before they expire too

    • The included 4GB data will last 14 days from the day you activate. Sim expiry times will vary according to purchase, so check box before you purchase. Yes, you can buy multiple ( if Coles staf allow ) modems and just activate each one as required before the sim expiry date.

Maybe someone here who recently purchased can confirm sim expiry date please?

  • +1

I purchased telstra Buzz and sent for repair 3 times… can't complain much for that price but 3 times is too much trouble. not a good phone.

    • +1

If I knew that a particular model phone was prone to some fault/failure with high rates of returns, I would never buy that model/production run until they rectified the problem. Even if it is cheap. There are so many decent well priced reliable models on the market these days, why take unnecessary risk.

Have bought many different cheap smartphones for people the last five years including Huawei, LG, Samsung, ZTE and lately Alcatel with zero failure/break downs so far. All Australian stock bought locally, some with 2 Yrs. warranty.

    • What were the faults?
Is there a forum listing faults with the Buzz?

  • Can someone please confirm when the 4g modem needs to be activated by ?

    • $24.50 - Huawei E5573 Optus 4G WiFi Modem - Includes 4GB start-up data for use in Australia within 14 days - Offer ends 13/09/16 - Activate before 30/10/16

      • Is it virtually a paper weight after this date ?

        • At a guess, all the included credit expires after the sim expiry on the sim/box ( maybe only 2GB/ 14 days ).

The offer ending 13/09/16 is to be able to get 4GB instead of maybe 2GB? To be confirmed by Optus maybe with Live Chat.

  • Went to my local coles and the bird said the optusnet 4g wifi modem is $49…

Asked for a brochure and this special wasn't listed!

I was fkn spewing haha (I reside in newcastle NSW)

Ofcourse there's no deal yet as it doesn't start until tomorrow 7/9/16. A rookie mistake not reading the description in particular the sale start date.

Re: Optus 4G modem - Officeworks offering the same at $24.50, picked up one today. Works great, unlocked, using it now with Telstra SIM. According to box and enclosed Optus SIM pack, expiry date is 1/8/2018,

  • +1

I also bought the $30 Prepaid mobile sim starter kit for $10 (has expiry of 01 Feb 2018).

Can this $30 Prepaid mobile sim be used as mobile broadband plan only rather than mobile phone plan, and recharged with $30 of 3GB for 30 days?

    • +2

Need to check with Optus customer support. I've bought a broadband prepaid SIM by mistake before and once I activated it online, it was not possible for Optus customer support to change into a voice SIM plan.

      • ^^This^^

      • Thanks. Ah, just spotted Fred Nerk's comment further up, and only three options when activating, so assume I will not be able to switch it to broadband/data sim, but can use it on Ultimate plan and get at least 2GB of data out of it when activating it after 30/10/2016. I bought three of these kits, so not likely to use all 9GB available before 30/10/16.
My mistake below, should read "Ultimate plan - $30 = incl 2GB + 1GB bonus which ends 30/10/2016"

    • Looked at suggested link on inside of kit => optus.com.au/prepaidplans :
      Ultimate plan - $30 = incl 3GB + 1GB bonus which ends 30/10/2016 + unlimited talk/text with 28 days expiry
      Data sims plan - $30 = 4GB expires in 1 month
Daily Plus and Long Expiry - only have 500MB and 600MB respectively, so not suitable for my needs

So if this sim can count as a data sim, then I can keep until 1 Feb 2018 before needing to activate to get the 4GB of data (maybe 6GB by 2018 :)

Can anyone confirm it can be activated as a data sim?

      • +1

The best way is actually try it out online (enter the SIM number). I think the data SIM plans are for mobile broadband SIMs. Last time I talked to Optus customer rep, the rep explained to me that they cannot change a voice SIM into a data SIM because the voice SIMs and data SIMs are programmed differently.

      • +1

I just put this to the Optus online customer service "chat" system:

Mo K:Hi, this is Mo K, your Optus Sales Consultant, how can I help?

You:Hello, I would like to know whether the Optus Mobile $30 SIM Starter Kit available in stores can be used with the $30 4GB Pre-Paid Mobile data plan, or whether this requires a specific Mobile Data SIM card.

Mo K:I'll transfer you to the right team
        This interaction has been transferred
Hi! You are now chatting with Dave
You:Hello, have you got an anwser to my question?
        Dave:Yep ☺
Dave:Are looking for a mobile service or just data?
        You:Just data

Dave:No worries you can get a broadband SIM card and activate it ☺

You:Thank you, but will the Optus Mobile $30 SIM Starter Kit available in stores suit that?

Dave:Yes make sure you ask for the broadband one not the prepaid mobile service SIM

        You:OK, thank you.
        [assorted thanks and plastic smiles]

I believe this means that the mobile data packages are not usable with the SIM starter pack in this offer because the pack in the catalogue is desribed as a "Pre-Paid Mobile SIM", not a Data SIM.

For reference, the plans are described on this page (perhaps obvious, but it took me a while to find it):
        http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/prepaid/plans

The same page shows that Optus themselves are currently offering a 50% discount on a $30 starter kit (possibly the same), ending at 8AM Thu 8th Sep.

        • As netsurfer suggested, I tried the Optus mobile sim in the modem last night. Would not work (normally even brand new optus broadband sims work in same optus modem). I then went thru the activation process of this new Mobile sim (via a different broadband connection) and was only given the three Mobile options, NOT the fourth option of "Data sims plan (…, $30 = 4GB expires in 1 month,….)".

Oh well, I can at least activate two of them on the Ultimate plan before the 30/10/16 to get the 3GB. The third one will give me 2GB at most, unless Optus renew their 1GB bonus in the future.

Thanks SIM Card Cheapskate, for talking to Optus to verify it as well.

So was anyone successful purchasing Skype cards 50% off at Coles today?

Went to 2 store today…first store had zero stock of Skype cards and not even a space for them. I made an enquiry at the store and the store assistance checked the hidden stash of cards at the top of the gift card holder and no Skype cards to be found.

Went to a second store and again no Skype cards, although this one did have a banner on the gift card stand advertising 50% Skype cards. Asked the lady on front counter and she seemed unsure what they were, I asked if she can check the secret stash under the top of the stand. While she was looking in the top I spotted some and grabbed them and pulled them out.

I commented that it was odd they had a stash hidden and not even a empty space where they were displayed, but..anyway I'll grab 3. She grabbed an unopened packed and walked back to the front counter.

When she tried to scan the cards she looked puzzled and then said "it's not a valid gift card, so we don't have them in stock"!

I argued that of course she has stock I can see them in her hands. I then commented that regardless of what the computer says I can see stock and this is starting to sound like bait advertising and this is a breach under the ACCC.

She just looked blankly and said, "sorry can't help you".

Again I advised that as they are advertising 50% and that started today, and she is withholding stock this is a breach under ACCC.

Soon a manager arrived and after listening to my story advised that if they don't scan he can't sell them and nothing he can do.

I advised that the response they were giving me wasn't exactable and I hadn't even been offered to leave my details for a call back.
He then advised he would look into it and let me know the issue tomorrow. I politely told him that I in-fact I would expect a call letting me know when I can come back and purchase the 3 cards at 50% and again that regardless if their is a technical glitch this is appearing to be bait advertising and they were withholding stock.

So now I wait for a call back.

Contact coles FB & let them know how poor the service was & the fact they didn't even know what you were talking about, I mean do they live under a rock! who the hell doesn't know what Skype gift cards are

  • I went to 4 Coles stores in Adelaide today (in Adelaide for a week, ran out of data on my regular phone plan already, hah) and none had the Optus 4G WiFi Modem :(

Welland, Findon, Kilkenny and St. Clair were sold out. The checkout person at Welland said that some dude came in and bought 10 - argh.

Hopefully they'll get some more in tomorrow.

    • Try Officeworks man, same price

      • Thanks man, I'll give them a shot :)

  • So the $30 starter sims are only pre-paid mobile ones? Or can we ask for broadband mobile starter sims?

    • In the Coles catalogue, it only shows (and labelled as) the Mobile starter pack for $10. And you can't change it to data sim plan to make it a broadband mobile sim (as seen further above). Even though the Ultimate mobile plan includes 3GB of data if activated before 30/10/2016.

      • Anyone know the cheapest place to get a data sim is then? :/

        • +1

          maybe this

          http://www.vodafone.com.au/mobile-broadband/prepaid/state/st…

        • @antkey: WOW thanks! is the optus wifi 4g unlocked at coles? :/

        • @trarob: In referring to comments from other ozbargainer, the 4G dongle from Coles and Officeworks is not locked. I wanted to order online or go to the store but didn't get any time now looks out of stock with my nearest stores
