What's the appeal of these Casio watches?

    • +6

      Nostalgia?
I imagine quite a few people had them as kids

      • +3

Yep! I had one of these in primary. Went swimming with it all the time. Oh what fun it is to pee in the pool and splash wearing this watch.

Mine was black. They never had these colours when I was young

    • Futuristicness obviously: "no nonsense look, wide array of features", weren't you listening?

    • hipsters.

"How has a watch so universal in its appeal that it has appeared on the wrists of both Barack Obama and Napoleon Dynamite earned a reputation that could see you imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay for owning one? Read on to find out…

What do hipsters and jihadis have in common? Aside from a penchant for bushy beards, the answer is: probably not much. Or so you would’ve thought. Several years ago, information dissidents Wikileaks came into the possession of documents linking Casio’s iconic F-91W watch to terrorist bomb makers. The U.S. military even lists the unassuming digital timepiece as “the sign of al-Qaida,” owing to the fact that the Islamist organization uses them to produce improvised explosives. But how did an accessory so widely available that you can pick it up at American Apparel manage to achieve such deadly notoriety?"

  • Just checked. You can get them for $9.99 in black on ebay.

      • "The watch comes brand new in a plastic sleeve bag."
      • Also I'm assuming no manufacturers warranty (Or if even warranty in general)?
      • Grey market stock or counterfeit? Up to you.
    • +2

      Those are counterfeit.

Feedback from same seller but different account.

The black version ships to Aus from Amazon for approx AUD $13.75
I would personally just buy the 50mm Skmei 1134 for $9.07 if you want a fun cheapo.

I also just found the Casio W-735H-5AVCF for approx AUD $22.35 delivered.

    • Nice, will get the black version as well now! :)

How's the quality of the Skmei watches? I found a couple on Aliexpress that I'm interested in.

      • +3

You wouldn't wear them in the water and the face feels like it's plastic, but they are pretty good for what you pay. I wear my blue negative display 1134 to work on building sites and it has held up well for the last 6 months. Still looks almost like new.
        Love the hourly chime also.
I think Skmei and Naviforce are my favourite cheapos.

    For anyone wondering…

    Chronograph :

A watch which tells the time and acts as a stopwatch.

    • Lol didn't see that as I just copied and pasted from their site :P Will update the description thanks!

  • The colour doesn't look Retro IMO.
