Note7 Recall, Virgin Turns Back on Their Word

EDIT: When I ask about the recall, Virgin said I can keep the Gear Fit 2.
Then today they said I have to return it together with the Note7…

I have the transcript when they said I don't need to return it.
But now they go back on their word, what can I do?

Obviously you all know of literally the hottest phone of the year: Note7

I'll go straight to the point, the recall options from Virgin are:

  1. Switch to any other phone on a new 24 months contract without any payout. I can keep all accessories like free microSD card, the Gear Fit 2 and stylus, box, etc. On top of that they give me $100 credit. The only phone that temp me is the S7 Edge on $65/69 pm.
  2. Switch to prepaid, the contract will be terminated, no payout required, the bill will be prorata-ed. I keep everything like option 1, except the handset. As for the phone, I can use my old S6, and wait until S8 or wait for S7/Note7 to drop in price to $800 or so.
  3. Wait until the replacement Note7 arrive, use temporary phone in the meantime, continue the contract.

Obviously the 3rd option is no bargain. The dilemma is whether the 1st or 2nd option is better bargain.
Would love to hear your opinion on this matter.

If you choose 1, can you explain why you think S7 Edge wouldn't drop in price? Given that S8 launch is only 6 months to go.

    Switch to S7 Edge, get $100. It's a steal!

Switch to prepaid, wait for S7 Edge or Note7 drops in price. Or wait for S8.

    1. Choose 1
  • What's the value of the Gear Fit 2?

    • I don't get refund on that. That is free for me to keep.
The latest deal on that was $150ish

  • How the hell are we supposed to know if prepaid or a plan is better for you if you don't?

    • Thanks, I'll make the question simpler for you:
Would you choose 24 months contract for $100 discount, or would you choose prepaid?

      • well because you can usually save more than the phone costs over 24 months if you're on prepaid, I know what I'd choose.

        • Hi Terminal,

I thought so too, but I use around 2-3GB a month, which usually around $30 pm.
Considering the $65pm deal, the phone costs would be: $65-30=$35*24-$100 = $740.

    For me, #1.

    • Pocket the $100
    • Get an expensive phone (iPhone 7?)
    • Sell iPhone and use temporary phone
    • Use the profit and get the Samsung Note 7 again (outright) when it's back in non-explosive stock
    • Sell off the second batch of extras you got
  • Depends if you really wanted the note (stylus. Etc) or not. S7 is an okay deal but if you stay on prepaid for a while, I'm sure a better deal will come

    • Tbh, the past 2 weeks I rarely use the stylus or Iris scanner. The bigger storage is almost full though, but again microSD would solve that issue easily.

      • This would have been a better deal than Virgin (s7 edge. local stock. telstra network), maybe another one like this will come: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/254089

        • Oh woolworths using telstra is it?

I think I prefer note7 a little bit, its screen is flatter than s7e

  • There is no difference with the 2 phones except the pen and iris scanner, why do you need it anyway?

  • Any phone? Iphone 7, sell, profit

    • Any phone. But let's say Virgin got a good deal for Iphone 7, selling a $1200 phone on eBay attract 10% fee which is $120.

It's hard to get a profit..

      • don't use feebay, gumtree instead. Feebay gonna keep your money for a month at least.

  • Merged from Note7 Recall, Virgin Turns Back on Their Word

This is a follow up from this topic:

When I ask about the recall, Virgin said I can keep the Gear Fit 2.

I have the transcript when they said I don't need to return it.
But now they go back on their word, what can I do?

    • I would contact Consumer Affairs in your state (or the equivalent for Telcos if that who regulates this market) immediately and ask them exactly what Virgin's obligations are.

      • I told them I was very unhappy that I was told it is ok, but they changed their mind…
Well, after hassling, they still said they can't give it away.

So, I accepted to return the watch with unhappy notes…..

I thought the watch is getting cheaper and cheaper by the day, so maybe i can buy something else…….

    • Have you tried posting the question to their FB? Maybe include a snipping of the transcript (with any identifying details removed)- try to get some clarification or reasoning for their change in standing on the issue? You'd unlikely be the only Virgin customer affected, so you may get a bit of support on the page (or at least other people asking the same thing).

      • they said they were wrong before, or rather the other person yesterday was wrong.

        • They seem fairly quick to apologise on their FB posts is all.

    • @fm — please use the same thread if it's a follow up of the same issue.

      • oh ok, will do in the future, thanks
