28 Degrees new payment method. How is it secure?

Hi,

So, I don't regularly use my 28 Degrees credit card, only if I am buying overseas, or travelling.

Anyway, after a short trip in SE Asia a month ago, I repaid the full amount owing on the card as soon as I returned.

Checking today, I found the BPay 95c fee applied to my account. I missed the PSA from earlier this year on this, but that's okay, I'm not too worried, but I explored the new payment method, so that I could pay off the remaining 95c owing on the account, to avoid any further costs.

All I had to do was input my BSB and account number, the amount, and submit.

Now, in the past, through things like eBay, I have handed out my account details to buyers, to make payments to me. Does that mean that anyone with my account details can simply pay off their 28 Degrees card with my money?

In the past, any sort of payment like this has undergone vetting, such as small payments (less than $1) into my account, and the value of these payments must be confirmed by the applicant to indicate that the applicant has access to the statements on this account, and therefore verify they are the owner.

No such thing here. What am I missing?

Thanks guys.

  • You must've linked your account in the past?

  • I would assume that the account name has to match the cardholder name.

  • Also wondering this, paid off my card with the method you described, didnt even get asked by commbank about the charge. Pretty sure I've never linked my bank account to 28 deg before.

So, since there are a few people wondering about this, I decided to call and ask.

Spend the last half hour on the phone to them, getting it escalated etc.

And was informed that indeed the account name on both the 28 Degrees and the Bank account from which the money is coming from must match, otherwise the payment will be rejected.

    Also joint accounts are okay.

Anyone can confirm otherwise? Has anyone managed to make a payment using an account where the name differs?

    • Banks don't match account names on any transactions. None.
      This is a bs excuse.

  • I know it's too late, but you should have just left the $0.95. Reports say that for small amounts, if left long enough, they will just write it off.

In regards to putting in any random persons account details…

If this was to happen, while it would be inconvenient for the victim, it will get resolved.

If an amount is disputed back to 28 Degrees, than you can rest assured the card holder will get in the poop.

    • Can confirm this
My 95 cents charge was written off the following month (I didnt even know I was charged until I logged in today)

It's not secure. The bank account name does not have to the match the 28 Degrees account name. I have previously processed a direct deposit payment of a 28 Degrees account with differing names, with the permission of all parties involved of course.

  • "Does that mean that anyone with my account details can simply pay off their 28 Degrees card with my money?"
It seems the answer is yes.
And if you are thinking to use an account where you keep a $0 balance and only put money in it as required that would not work either as the bank would pay anyway and charge you an overdraft fee.

    • Short term yes, long term no.

Once the account holder has found the fraudulent transaction and it's reversed, 28 Degrees will return the funds and charge late fees and interest (at a minimum).
