The Best Phone under $400

The title explains all, please recommend a good phone under the $300 - 400 range

Thanks in advance

I do have 2 phone's I'm looking at

Moto G4 Plus

Moto G3

Please don't include
  • smartphones sold from China (e.g. Geekbuying, Everbuying)

  • smartphones sold from an online retailer besides a larger well-known store (e.g. Harvey Norman)

  • smartphone brands only sold online (like Xiaomi)

Your help is much appreciated

Tbh the phones you are looking at are perhaps the best options in that price range (considering if you're only after local stock), however I would advise the Moto G4 Plus over the Moto G3 as there isn't a large difference of price between the two when it comes to sales. I have owned the Moto G3 previously and it is a great phone, however the price is highly inflated for it in Aus, as compared to the States or India. The Moto G4 Plus 32Gb version is great for it's price (around $340-360 during sales). Good luck :)

    • Which is better?

Main problems I had with the Moto G3 (perhaps not much of concern for most people)

        • 720p Screen
        • No NFC
        • Maximum expandable storage is only 32GB
        • Bit bulky for my liking

However the phone had many great features too for it's price

        • LONG battery life
        • Great camera for the price
        • Near stock android experience
        • Dual sim

The Moto G4 Plus almost fixes all the problems I had with the Moto G3 and keeping the features I liked in the previous model for just a little extra. So yeah, G4 Plus is better!

          Thank you very much!!!

        • Just to chip in: G4 Plus has no magnetometer to sense magnetic fields, so it's basically not able to tell you compass information (can't tell which direction you're facing)

Could be a downside if you heavily rely on it for on-foot nav directions or play PokeGo.

        • @scrimshaw: Really?

"We'd like to inform you that following sensors will be there in Moto G 4th generation or Moto G plus 4th generation:

          Accelerometer
          Gyroscope
          Magnetometer (Compass)"

          :)

        • @stuhtb:

          scroll down a bit more

          read "Motorola Admin's" comment

          :)

        • @scrimshaw: lol my bad.. all good :)

  • Xperia XA is another alternative in that price range, however it isn't exactly better regarding performance/features

  • smartphones sold from China (e.g. Geekbuying, Everbuying)

    Why?

    • Because they emit more non visible radiation in the cellular radio component than major name manufacturers. It's got to do with R&D spending vs safety of consumers.

      • I'm not very safe then…

        • There hasn't been any conclusive links to this and illeffects in humans though. But you never know..

It's more difficult for warranty, also some personal reasons

    Only one device…

    Nexus 5X (32GB).

    The rest are junk, seriously.
(the oneplus3 and zte axon 7 are nice too, but don't meet your requirements)

    • Have to second that.
I had an LG G3 and gave up on waiting for security updates after over a year with no updates.
      Partly LG, partly OPTUS.
Same for most other non Nexus/Pixel phones.
Only guaranteed to get frequent security updates is ti get a Nexus.
And its great phone for the price.

      • How do you feel about the difference in the cameras of the LG G3 and the Nexus 5x?

        • Got the Nexus 6p. Just do snapshots and have not had any issues with either camera (LG G3 or Nexus 6p).
          Nexus 5x could not comment.

  • I would put extra $100 and get Moto X Force @ $500.22

    • I was looking at that..

      btw it's $600

        Read the comments.
It was $500.22 @ mobileciti eBay - a local store.
But now out of stock, maybe you can ask them if anyway thing they can do like backorder.

          The key word was…. was

but yeah they do backorder I think

          @Bearosaurus:

haha they post the deal yesterday.
I have no idea it will run out so quick.

        • @windwai:

I'm actually not buying now but just want recommendations

        • @Bearosaurus:

You should ask when you are buying, the price will change from time to time and new models are coming out.

        • @windwai:

OK, will come back in 3 months
