Need a Laptop No Idea Where to Start!

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a laptop, budget is around $1000. Not keen on Mac so looking for Windows laptop.

I will mainly be using the laptop for surfing the net, YouTube etc., writing assignments, watching movies and also possibly some photo editing. Won't be using it for gaming or anything but I'd still like it to run smooth and fast.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated so that I can keep my eye on deals! Thanks :)

  • There are Soo many to choose from, but look for something with see hard drive. That helps performance greatly.

However with what you gave specified its use $1000 is probably too much.

    • I know! It's overwhelming! I'm happy not to spend that much but yea I don't know where to start

      • Centrecom.com.au lmc.com.au msy.com.au scorptec.com.au are just a few you can visit to get some ideas prices etc.

  • Raspberry Pi and a k/Bogan TV

  • +3

ThinkPad 13 would've been my suggestion, but unfortunately that deal is no more.

I just want to point out: a large part of your experience with a laptop are these things:

    1. The display
    2. The build quality — especially keyboard and touchpad
    3. and finally the core specs.

Why did I put the Display above all else? Mainly because a lot of laptops nowadays pack very budget TN displays that are low resolution TN panels which are just terrible to look at. On 15 inch display, a resolution of 1366 x 768 yields a meagre 100 PPI

If you're buying a $1k machine, try to pick one that has a FHD display — preferably IPS. your laptop's screen is the most important feature.

Secondly is the build quality, which you can ascertain by physically visiting a store and testing out the device. You can't do so on many models that are only ever sold online (e.g Thinkpad Edge series) but you can read reviews on Notebookcheck.

    • Thanks for the tips!

  • Deals come soon enough.

Is weight a big factor? $1k can get you very good laptop, but if you need it to be ultrabook thin and light, theres not so much range left.
I recommend looking for something with i5 processor, and an SSD is always a plus.

    • Didn't really think about weight but yea I guess I'd prefer something lighter. Thanks!

  • Dell Factory Outlet. You won't need to spend anywhere near $1000.

  • make sure it has an SSD not HDD

the difference is night and day and quieter and lighter and uses less power

  • I'm waiting for the Xiaomi Notebook. See the official Xiaomi website and here.

  • Like suggested before, Dell Factory outlet.
Check back every couple of days. I personally don't have much of an opinion of the Inspirons, but their Latitude and XPS series are pretty sweet. The recent XPS' have minimal bezel, but I'm not sure if they show up below 1K.
MSY and Umart are competent with pricing as well.
