Tyrwhitt seems to pop up on here frequently. Hmmmm.

Charles Tyrwhitt LLP sells men's and women's shirts, business clothing and accessories which are advertised extensively online and in printed catalogue inserts in Australian newspapers and magazines.

The brand, which spruiks "exemplary customer service, with smashing prices and a pinch of British charm thrown in for good measure," is known for its deal-based offers, like its set of four shirts for $199.

But following an investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the retailer was issued a $10,800 penalty and an infringement notice for contravening the Australian Consumer Law with its "was/now" pricing practices in the sale of at least 737 business shirts

    Still a good quality shirt!

It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.
I think all of us who purchase these shirts know that the "Normal" price for these shirts are between $35 to $70.
And the Sale price are always between $27 and $39.

Still, great shirts for the price.

It sure doesn't take a genius.

However, it is still misleading to do such practices.
And I can honestly say I know a dozen other people personally who will succumb to these tricks.
Just imagine all the people you don't know that will fall for this sort of crap.
I think they might have gotten off lightly if the fine was only $10K.
That's almost what 5% fine for each shirt… I'm sure there would've been a higher than 5% increase in sales figures due to this trick alone.

I think the more damaging thing is to "name and shame" them.
But then again, the majority really do have short memory spans… so the retailers win again.

      • I think naming and shaming works for certain retailers, but not them. The irony is, I think it will actually bring them more business. (i.e. Knowing that they have "fooled" me, I will still buy their shirts as there is no disputing that the shirts are of great quality for the price you pay.)

Edit: However, I do not condone deceptive advertising.

yep, It was mentioned in the last deal post, Friday.

doesn't matter how good the shirts are or if people realised the before price was never the selling price. They simply aren't allowed to do this in Australia.

  • Good collar by the ACCC, who have rolled their sleeves up, and put the cuffs on Charles Tyrwhitt.

    • Yuk yuk yuk. It was only a matter of time before the ACCC cottoned on and buttonholed them for it.
