Super cheap phone deals?

Looking for a secondary phone. don't really care about much, but it has to have basic smartphone functionality. Preferably coming with some credit would also be nice. I basically just want something different to my primary work phone / number for internet use, signing up to websites etc.

  • Optus Zip is $40 at Coles this week.

    • Awesome. Do they have any credit that come with them? Even a small amount? Or just the number

      • It will definitely have an Optus SIM. No meaningful credit (I have a vague feeling it might have 50Mbps of data to allow online registering?).
For what you need, $10 on the Optus $2 a day plan likely works out cheapest. That keeps the number valid a long while and only costs you when you actually use the cell features (send an SMS, make a call, use 3G/4G data) so it would cost $2 on a day you use it.

        • For what you need, $10 on the Optus $2 a day plan likely works out cheapest.

FYI, it's 50mb of data, not 50Mbps, which refers to speed/bandwidth.

The $2 a day sounds good in theory but it gives you 500mb of data a day. If you exceed that amount, it takes another $2 from you. $2 a day @ 28 days is $56. There are so many better ~$30 caps that provide better value.

  • Optus m2m $30 plan (no lock in contract just pay month to month)

Unlimited calls and texts within australia, 1.5gb data and currently free googleplay, iheart radio, spotify streaming so no data usage.

Just a dollar a day… or for $40 a month get 8gb data plus the free streaming. Just need to byo mobile phone.

  • I would get a cheap outright (unlocked) phone and then use one of those $15 per month packs from the likes of ALDImobile or Vaya…

If you're not using it much you can potentially pay $0 a month with Amaysim's as you go plan: https://www.amaysim.com.au/mobile-plans/amaysim-as-you-go, or add a 1GB data pack for just $10.

I just use a $250 Xiaomi Note 3 Pro (which you can get for around $200) and then pay like $12 a month.

    Here's a $166 Xiaomi:
