  • Not bad for $39. Can't find much about this model- it is also called the ZTE A110 but can't find it on gsmarena or XDA.

  • is this the Zip 3G or Zip 4G though? there are two different models and the 3G one is a pile of garbage.

    • Sorry scratch this comment, I didn't realise there was also the Fit 4G, which is what I had purchased in the past. This only has a 4" screen. Still probably a good deal for $40.

    Any unlock suggestion?

    • Don't waste your money on an unlock. It can only receive or make calls on GSM. Only good on the Optus network, so pretty average.

      • +2

Doesn't the 3G support voice? Do you have a link where I can understand better what happens to devices that don't support VOLTE with the 2g closure?

        • +1

I don't know the technical details. It was discussed previously here

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/258471

If I don't have it set to GSM I miss incoming calls and have to wait ages for it to negotiate an outgoing call.

        • +3

Nothing really happens to 4G/3G devices after the 2G shutdown, only that you will be restricted to 3G or VoLTE for calls afterwards.

Optus isn't dumb enough to sell a phone now that won't work in 6 months.

        • +2

          @StrayfireX:

Not on their network, but as this is an Optus Prepaid ( read subsidised cost ), they would not care if it does not work on the Telstra or Vodafone. Only supports 3G 900mMHz and 2100MHz, no 850MHz for 3G calls and no VoLTE for Telstra and possibly Voda for calls. Different story for certain other OS countries if needed, do research first.

    great backup phone for travelling

  • +6

Maybe a wall switch for LIFX bulbs?

    • +3

Gr8 idea! Create a tasker widget that makes the whole screen a toggle.

      • +1

And sticky tape a power cable running up to it.

So your wall switch will work for longer than 1 or 2 days.

        • Qi wireless charging behind the gyprock plaster maybe?

        • @mikmac:

LOL - the ultimate wireless solution!

  • I think Optus only sell the 4g

  • Its not a bad unit. Got dad one to replace his extremely aged Nokia 3xxx ancient handset…..he wasn't happy joining the tech age, but he's getting the hang of it.

    Does the job.

    What is not to like?

    Network Lock: Locked to Optus

    • Should be able to get it unlocked cheaply on eBay.

      • See comments above, beware on Telstra Network when 2G cut off.

    • 4GB free

  • Good to see you can buy it online.
    https://shop.coles.com.au/a/a-wa-metro-beeliar/product/optus…
And it doesn't say it's locked, online. For @NgaYeu

    • It is locked. I bought one few weeks before. Got a unlock code on eBay for a few dollars.

      • can you please pm me for Ebay link to unlock please…

Anyone have this phone? Does it run pokemon go? Would be good to get the kids off my phone and draining the bloody battery all the time

    • +1

      this made my day

    • +1

VR does not work and very laggy on the latest version of the app. Still good if you have a bit of patience, so not for kids.

    • +1

I got this one for the kids from target ($59) and it does the job:
      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaidmobile/alcatel/pop-5
Alas, I doubt target will still have them in stock. It takes a while to load but works way better than our iPhone 4S.

    • It runs.
However it is very slow and you would want to throw it to the wall.

  • +2

get officeworks to pricematch to get it for ~ $37 (http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/optus-zte-z…)

  • If it had Android 6.0 would be sweet but the 8GB will struggle after a few apps.

    • How much better is Android 6.0 when the RAM is limited like this one?

  • +1

I am assuming that this would be usable on Amaysim straight away cause they are an MVNO? Looking to buy a cheapo Android that can at least handle a Seniors phone app of some sort and try to get in to the smart phone game, otherwise if she don't use it I will keep it as a spare.

    • i'd be interested to know if it's usable on amaysim too if anyone knows

      • +4

Yes, my optus locked handsets work on amaysim

      • +2

Yep, I've got this phone Optus locked working with Amaysim no problem. I paid $60 or 70 for it and thought it was OK value, $39 is excellent I think. We're just using it as a backup phone, not sure what it's like to use all the time.

      • +1

        thanks DarkLotus/Big Trev.

bought last night and amaysim's working just fine on it.

        • Not working on my Amaysim.. What am I doing wrong?

        • @robotdad:

not sure? I just popped it in and it worked out of the box.
i'm on amaysim prepaid though if that makes any difference

        • +1

@shakoo: all working now. Just had to turn it off and on again. Thanks.

    • I have the Fit 4G (also Optus locked) and it is fine on Virgin.

  • +3

Price matched at OW in store. Thanks!

  • +2

    Works with vaya.

    • -1

      would have never guessed!

  • +13

hmm.. iPhone 7 plus or 40 of these.

    • +11

Easy choice as this has 3.5mm headphone hole.

  • -1

Can we return them if it doesn't work for Pokemon Go? ;P

    • +1

At Officeworks you probably could - they don't seem to mind a "change of mind".

  • +1

Better to use this or Optus Huawei E5573 modem as a portable wifi unit?

    • I will use the Optus Huawei E5573 modem.

It looks support more bands and it can be used as a extender while you can set it up to connect free wifi and it will automatically use the free wifi in the area instead of yours data.

  • A 3.5mm headphone plug was very obliging by Apple. I would have expected a 3.4mm hole. Anyway, its all sorted now.

  • +1

great price for such a phone

  • Thanks OP. This is the best bargain Android phone I would buy if I'm not going to buy iPhone 7.

  • The zte fit 4g i must say is up there with my zte tab from back in the day. Great handset and battery life was fantastic.

6 hours of radio and fit bit on synch throughout the day with emails and calls and was still getting me through the day with decent amount of battery life left.

  • With a 1600mha battery it would go flat very quickly with Pokemon Go.

  • +1

It was selling at $34.5 before. This time is not the cheapest.

  • any startup credit / data?

  • Great. I need to stock up on burner phones. Im on my last one

  • How Do I unlock phone… can any one please PM me the Ebay Link

  • I was going to buy this phone (expires today, not yesterday) but noticed Coles selling the ZTE Chat 4G for $49.50 starting tomorrow… for $10.50 more, a better phone, do you think? Can you use any Optus reseller with either of these phones?

    • chat has bigger screen buuut dual core (vs quad core) 4.4 (vs 5.1) 4gb (vs 8gb) 512mb (1gb) so chat is much less powerful than aptly named zip. My zip works with vaya. Is now $59 but worth it.

      • Thanks for the info. I should have gone and bought the zip yesterday!

      • Hey I just checked which one is on special this week, it is the Chat 4G. Are the specs you listed for the 3G model?
So the specs are actually: quad core, 5.1.1, 8gb, RAM not mentioned on manufacturer website but a review I found states 900mb. Also has a 2200mAh battery vs 1600mAh for the Zip. Zip has 1900MHz GSM but the Chat doesn't… but that's only of use in north america, right?

  • This phone costs the same as my plastic Samsung case.
