The Pop 5 is a very decent entry phone for $59. Beautiful screen for the price. Due to the 1GB of RAM it isn't much of a multitasker but it's surprisingly snappy and doesn't hang that much.

    • after a day got to admit it does lag a bit sometimes and battery is very avergae but cameras and screen are still very good.

  • +2

Very disappointing they don't stock the Oppo F1 but good deal nonetheless.

    • At $99 bucks the Oppo would be a steal. Did they have the new ZTE blitz there also for half price?

      • +1

nah i checked couple of places, was hoping for that one too.

  • Do they come with any prepaid credit?

  • Is there anywhere i can unlock this?

    • Fish around on eBay for an unlock code appropriate to the phone. Be careful though as a lot are scammers.

      • unlockpov can't help with the Pop 4 either.

    • Try Bagman here at OzB

  • Alcatel Pop 5 4G vs Huawei Y3 II 4G?

Should I just get a cheap prepaid phone or just get on a plan and get a s7 or alike grrrr

    • +5

It all depends on what you use your phone for. Amazingly, most people who buy $1000 phones do not even use them to their apparent $1000 worth. In my opinion a sub-$200/300 is all you need and it saves you so much money in the end.

      • Yep that's what I have always done but if I did go for a plan I would get a extra 5gb per mo

      • Mate, how do you use '$1000 phone to their apparent worth'?

    • +2

for $59 the Alcatel pop 5 4g is an excellent phone for the money , 5 inch 720p , 8mp and 5mp camera with flashes and even has decent pair of JBL headphones you are not going to get a better phone for anywhere near that sort of money.

  • +1

got one alcatel pop 5 tonight

    • does pokemon go work on this?

      • +2

My friend has the Pop 5 and plays Pokemon Go on it just fine. Sure it lags but hey, it lags on a lot of "flagships" too.

  • +2

got the Pop5" seems decent for a backup phone now to try unlock

  • +1

if you find somewhere to unlock it could you let me know? thanks

    • Will work well on Optus and their on sellers ( as well as many O/S countries ), but not so well on Voda and especially Testra as missing 3G 850MHz band and many 4G bands too. Just depends on your location though, some maybe OK with the 2100MHz band only if close to supporting tower.

  • +1

I had the zip unlocked for $2.80 right here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257338
I would not recommend the phone as it is, and less so unlocked. I have problems receiving or making calls on Telstra 4G, I need to switch to GSM to get calls out often.

    • You are referring to the ZTE Zip re problem with Telstra?

    • +1

The phone is a bargain for $35.

My LG G4 is off for warranty repairs and I paid $69 for my ZTE Zip and I'd consider that a great phone for the price. I have not had any reception issues with using the phone on the Optus network.

      • My LG G4 is also off for repairs sent through JB Hi Fi. 11 days and counting. They said they might get to looking at it mid next week. I wish LG knew how to make phones that didn't @#$%ing break. G4 is brilliant when it doesn't die. I'm on my second dead with no bluetooth and WIFI in 8 months. I absolutely baby my phones. Using my old Galaxy S4 which is in great shape but it's a 3.5 year old phone!!

        • Mine got the boot loop issue which seems to be common. Problem is I bought it from a grey importer and their warranty process it turns out takes weeks and weeks.

        • @stewy:

I bought mine locally. First time my bluetooth and wireless died it was under 90 days and a same day replacement (which required a bit of a drive as the local store didn't have it, but same day is good). This time I'm probably in no better a situation than you. If I had known JB Hi Fi would use a repairer like this one (vast majority of feedback online is 1 star) I'd have gone directly to LG in Auburn.

      • As this is an Optus Prepaid model that supports all their 3G/4G bands including their new 700MHZ band this phone should perform well in decent reception areas. That is why "Snoovey" and most other Telstra/Vodafone users will also have problems with reception.

    • +1

      making calls on Telstra 4G

There is your problem, for calls on 4G you need a VoLTE compatible device.
As the Zip isn't it needs to drop back to 3G and for that to work on Telstra you'll need to be in an area of 3G 2100MHz. (Because no 3G 850MHz on the Zip) Otherwise as you say, dropping all the way back to 2G for the 2G 900MHz which is closing 1 December 2016.

    • +1

Because it doesn't have the frequency bands suitable for Telstra. The phone us only part compatible with Telstra (that's why it's Optus)

  • Hmm… I got the 4G Alcatel POP 5" from Target this morning. But when I open the phone it says Alcatel POP4.

OPS. Please change your title a little. It should state "Alcatel Pop 5" 4G" instead

    • It's a Pop 4, 5”

      • +1

Could Alcatel make their naming system any less clear? ¬_¬

  • can someone tell me if the Alcatel phone is locked to Optus?

    • I'm charging the phone right now, but I'm very sure it's locked to Optus yes. It got an "Optus" logo on the box.

  • Just got 2 pop 5 with bonus jbl headphones now for unlocks.

  • Pop 4 is defiantly locked works with my virgin sim who run on optus but does not work with aldi mobile who use telstra

    • That's, odd, so it isn't locked to Optus (retail) just to the Optus network?
So it should work on Vaya without unlocking?
If that's the case, seems a better option than the ZTE Blade for $50+unlock.

      • +1

Don't most locked prepaid phones these days work with their affiliate re-sellers ie. Optus with Virgin and Amaysim and Telstra with Boost and Aldi?? Mine always have the last few years.

        • Obviously it's been a while since I bought a 'locked' phone then. I remember them always being more locked. But perhaps that was before all the resellers came in and there were only really 3 options (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone).

        • @NigelTufnel:
Yep, spot on. I recall reading on here that the odd model prepaid phone ( usually really old stock ) could be locked to primarily only Telstra or Optus, but most these days should be open to same carrier/re-sellers. Most staff in the phone shops won't tell you that though, or won't guarantee it haha.

    • +1

      works with amaysim

  • you seriously cant go wrong with the Alcatel pop 4g pop 5 for $59. 720p screen, very useable 8mp+5mp cameras with flashes and even a good pair of JBL headphones. your not going to find a better phone for anywhere near the money. just need an unlock code, only problem is as its a brand new phone could be a while for unlock codes to come out.

  • +1

The front camera even has a flash

  • How does the Pop 4 compare to the Telstra 4GX Buzz?

    • +1

One is compatible with all Telstra freq bands the other will only part work with Telstra.

    • +2

Pop is thinner has much better screen and cameras and good pair of headphones pretty much a no brainer.

      • also 5 inch vs 4.5 on.buzz

    • +1

There are a few differences such as Pop 4 has bigger clearer screen, newer O/S Android 6, better cameras, Better JBL headphones, but biggest difference between two is one works on Telstra/re-sellers, other on Optus/re-sellers, Yes,….Even unlocked.

      • +2

I'm pretty sure that the Pop 4 will work on Telstra as well, since it supports UMTS Band 5, which is 850MHz 3G, and Band 28. The label on the box shows what the frequencies are.

        • Wow, thanks for that info. I am on the way now to get one, maybe two if that is correct. The Optus website states only 900MHz and 2100MHz. Let's see hay and fingers crossed :-)

        • @ozhunter68: I think I might be wrong - a scan doesn't show Telstra 3G, so it must be an error on the box. I reckon Optus deliberately cripple them to prevent people from using them on Telstra.

        • @happychappy1:
Oops,…just bought one and after checking box and confirming what you said and saw myself, bought a second one for a friend. Never mind, still good phone and might still come up with a way to unlock the 850MHz 3G band within the system if the chipset supports it and only turned off via software lock. Nice thin phone for $59 haha

        • it doesnt work with telstra. tried but no

        • @happychappy1:

I have just tried scanning network and it shows
          Telstra Mobile (Forbidden) 3G

Hmm… I think this could well work with Telstra, just have to wait until someone offers unlock code.

        • @adventurer: check Oztowers to make sure you are not near a 2100MHz Telstra tower.

        • @happychappy1:

          oztowers good one nice find.

The tower closest to me has both 850Mhz and 2100Mhz.
Well no easy way to find out, until a unlock is available.

  • Alcatel Pop 5 4G - is this a dual sim phone thats sold in Target?

    • +1

It's single SIM. The model is 5051X.

    • dual sim model calls pop star,229 bucks at post office

  • Good for hacking wifi or finding someone on gps, cheap DISPOSIBLE PHONE; SO MANY IDEAS.

  • -1

I think the main problems with a phone like the pop4 will be the lack of updates and a lack of accessories on places like ebay.

  • Hmmm… Still apparently $119 at target in going up qld. None of the Optus phones are on special.

    • Which store OP?

      • +1

Hurstville. Not sure about quantity now.
They had 1 Pop left as of yesterday approx 3pm. Not sure if its still there. They had quite a few of the Huawei Y3 II's.

    • Did you ask them to scan it?
my local didn't have the sale tags up but they all scanned at half price.

    • +2

dude got to ask them to scan it. there were no signs on target i went to but got them scanned and hey suprise all half price.

      • +1

Dang. Eh, I'll try again tomorrow.

      • Sweet got one today at Brisbane CBD floor. The guy said "Jeez, these Optus phones are going fast."

    • +1

I got mine at airport west, Vic store. No discount sign but I use target app to scan the barcode! BANG! Half price so I bought it. Bonus headphone is above average compare to other generic headphones you get with a budget phone. And hey! This phone has Gyroscope so AR mode in pokemon go works!

      • i was surprised with the headphones too, genuine JBL ! very good bass.

  • +1

It's annoying how optus gets 850mhz (3g) removed on all their prepaid devices, so we can't enjoy the full use on Telstra.

Oh well, I have one of the rare few that has 850/900 on 3G, and band 3/28 on 4G - LG something. Good backup phone.

    • +1

True, but Telstra and even Vodafone ( on most current prepaid phones, even although they still currently use both 850 and 900MHz for their 3G network ) cripple their phones with just either the 850MHz or 900MHz band as well as even trickier 4G bands too. For those who want a cheap prepaid phone that does all three and can easily be unlocked, like you said the LG Leon ( if you can find from Optus Online and Stores ) for $99 or the cheaper Alcatel Pixi 3 4.5 from Australia post or Kmart currently for $69. Both 4.5 " Quad cores with 1GB RAM/8GB ROM running Android 5.

The LG should be a little snappier with better CPU and camera and FHD video recording at 30 FPS. Both should work ok as entry level/back up smartphone with down to earth expectations.

      • +1

Lg Leon goes on sales for $69 regularly, I've had mine for 7 months or so now. Still a good deal.

        • Yep, good for people who can wait for sale, but currently not on sale. Someone who just bought a Alcatel Pop 4 5" said the box said also 850MHz 3G ( different to the Optus website ), so that phone becomes even better if true.

  • None at Macquarie Park :(

  • +1

As happychappy1 point out, the box label have 3G B1/2/5/8 , it should have 3G 1900,2100, 850 and 900. I saw that as well. I call Optus to confirm, their technical staff not sure too, transfer me to ALCATEL , but wrong number then phone line cut. What you guys think ?

    • Well it's not unheard of for Optus to not put all frequencies in the specs on their website. Modem box showing B5.

      • +1

happychappy1 said he can not scan 3G Telstra , He think may be the label in the box not correct. If he have not unlock the phone, can he still scan 3G Telstra 850 Band?

        • +1

It shows Vodafone 3G (900/2100), so it's nothing to do with whether the phone is locked or not. If you see Telstra 3G, make sure it's not the 2100MHz frequency. At my location, I don't have 2100MHz Telstra 3G, so 3G didn't show for Telstra.

    • Going to assume you have tried to force the 850mhz mode using hidden menu with something like this ##4636##

  • Cannot find an unlock code for the Alcatel. messaged mobileunlockmaster on ebay and he cant do it… dammit

    • Wait a few weeks and an unlocker will pop up on ebay somewhere. Alcatel is relatively newish to the smartphone community ( especially this model. So give the unlockers and Cyanogenmod some time.

    • +1

Yes really need to find unlock code. Anyone found someone can unlock this phone please post here. Thanks.

  • Any support Cyanogenmod or can be unlocked?

  • +1

anyone know what network TPG mobile uses? I think it is Vodafone.

    • Best to wait for an unlock code to turn up first ( unless you happy to play along with Optus unlock protocol ). Also might be good idea to have the 850MHz 3G band doubts cleared up first if you want to get the best reception for Telstra/Vodafone.

  • Yes TPG uses the Vodafone network.
