  • Bought a POP5 last night. Box was shrink wrapped, but when I opened it, there was no headphones and the factory screen protector was full of bubbles.
On a closer look the security seals on the actual phone box inside was tampered with. So whoever is packing these for Optus' got sticky fingers. luckily they exchanged it for me.

As for the phone, great screen, looks decently built for the price. But you can definitely notice the slow but usable performance.

    • +1

Yours had a "factory screen protector"? Ours didn't.

It had a colourful promotional sticker covering the screen, kinda like an info sticker.

What about the replacement? Was it like ours?

      • that's what I meant, the colour promo sticker covering the screen, that's there to protect the screen.
but the dodgy one had bubbles all over it like someone's peeled it off then put it back on.

the replacement one is fine. brand new. target had to get the grumpy manager to look at it, probably thinking we took it ourselves, can't blame them since the thing was shrink wrapped.

        • Shrink-wrap? lol discounted that because of things I've seen from waaay back.

Retail staff could copy software, then use their plasticator device to apply new shrink-wrap.
          Brand new!
          lol
          Bastards.

-But you can definitely notice the slow but usable performance.

Slow compared to what model smartphone under $119, or better still around $60??? Maybe a few around that price point with higher benchmark results ( LG Leon maybe with it's better CPU/GPU ) and phones that push less pixels. For everyday use nice and smooth I say, for $59 a Bargain. If we can unlock this cheap and able to use the 850MHz 3G band on this it's Real Sweet.

      • I've had a Huawei Y550 last year and a Lumia 640 this year, both were bought at this price range. both felt much more smoother to use.
this phone just felt choppy for the moment I turned it on, I think Marshmallow is demanding for it.

        • I am not doubting what you say as you have a couple of similar models to compare to ( although most Lumia 640 buyers would have paid between $120 to $180 ). As it turns out I have had/have both those exact models too, plus a ZTE Fit 4G, ZTE Blade D and a Alcatel Pixi 3 4.5 4G and a LG Nexus 4.

My Pop 4 although filled up the memory to less than 1GB free ( recommended to keep same ROM memory free as you have RAM ), this phone runs nice and smooth. Could say on par with the Lumia and the Nexus 4, heck,…they all do ok for the average use. Maybe your running full of apps or faulty. For $59 I'm very happy.

        • I tend to agree. I bought the Y550 last year for my wife, and it seemed smoother out of the gate, whereas there's a bit of lag (usable) in this phone.
But it was on KitKat, (and will be still suck there) and doesn't have any real features.

This is at least starting out on the latest OS, has a nice screen, camera and features I didn't expect like double tap to wake and sleep. I'm happy to take a little less smoothness for some nice features. It's got a lot more to offer than the $50 ZTE Blade I also bought for my sister (thinking it was a good deal), that also has a bit of lag, but only lollipop, and worse screen and camera.

        • +1

For those who find this not as smooth, try installing a different launcher such as Nova launcher. i did to mine and its smoother.

      • +1

I agree the lag is noticeable yet so far (with minimum apps I have installed) it is usable. I don't think we can install too many apps anyway as the storage is very limited.

  • +1

I bought a zte blade last week for $49 from woolies, and this Pop 4 5" 4G today.
A great phone for the price, screen is great. Definitely worth the extra ten bucks over the ZTE(assuming both on sale).
I've realized I can get away with fairly basic phones and this one is great. Battery is fantastic compared with the zte. I'm now selling it the zte.

  • +1

Coming from 2.2 Froyo with low-end hardware, the Pop is amazing.
But it's not for me. I wish they made really decent smaller phones (under 4").

  • is the hardware for the huawei y3ii an upgrade over the y550?

also when does this deal expire?

    • +1

Fairly similar for both, main difference is bigger memory in Y3ii is now bigger 8GB, upgrade from KitKat 4.4 to Lollipop 5.1, but missing the 850MHz 3G band and has different 4G bands, mainly the ( Optus/Telstra ) 700MHz ( B28 )instead of the Vodafone ( B5 ). The rest should look/feel/perform much of a muchness.

  • bought the Alcatel -good - no need to constantly update apps but worried about having less than 2 gb of storage left. Any idea how to move apps into sd card as there is no file manager to do it.

    • +1

Just insert your SDCard and the system will ask you whether you want to use your SD Card as internal or external storage. I chose internal and it starts installing apps on the SD Card.

I don't know if that Marshmallow's feature out of the box as this is my first Marshmallow device.

      • +1

On my old 2.2 phone, going into Apps management and selecting each one, it lets you clear data, cache and move to SD. Should be possible here for apps already on internal storage.

For the general file browser in 6.0, there's one in the Apps drawer (Files) but it's limited and simplistic.

The "hidden" low-level browser takes a little more effort:
        Settings > Storage & USB > Explore

It's at the very bottom. One day I'll figure out a shortcut.

  • Is it true that we can root (this) device only when it is unlocked?

  • +1

Just ordered a unlock code for 5.99 Euro paypal conversion $9.21AUD
maybe just another scam unlock site who claims they can unlock it with my imei.
will post link if it works.

    • got the codes back within a hour

they didn't work emailed the website the looked into it further and said only optus could unlock it i was refunded the full amount.

    • please let us know how u go thanks

      oops just read ur update.

  • Rang Optus and told them I am going overseas on Monday and need to unlock my pop4 5". Gave them the imei they said support team will send unlock in a few days.Got the unlock code today tried to unlock and it don't work. And I know how to unlock a phone and I gave them the correct imei. WTF.

    • If it worked you would have got lucky to get unlock code for free from Optus so soon. Maybe mistake and try again.

      • +2

If your a long time customer and going overseas they will unlock for free.

  • Is the lack of 64-bit an issue with the Alcatel Pop?

  • Thanks OP…I picked up what was apparently the last Alcatel Pop 5" from the Merrylands store today.

  • Managed to price match at Kmart and bought two. Screen is fantastic. Brighter, clearer and more responsive than Telstra 4GX Buzz, and 5 point multitouch not 2. Camera is also significantly better but still no where near a flagship phone and I wouldn't ever want to use it as my main camera. Memory is very tight though.

This is my first Marshmallow phone and I hate how SD cards are managed now. This is actually enough to put me off upgrading my "real" phone. It use to be that if your phone died it was no big deal providing you kept your media on SD card and the SD card hadn't died. Now if you use an SD card that way you can't use it to move apps across. And if you format it as internal the data is encrypted and dies with the phone. And when you first add an SD card you have to move apps across one at a time??? What the hell are Google thinking!?!? Also you need a fast SD card. Luckily I had one lying around from a previous bargain to try. For me this negates every improvement that's come with Android as I'll be paranoid about dumping my files.

I wonder if it'll ever get a cheap unlock. I'm a Telstra user for both prepaid and postpaid so at the moment there's no chance of it being used as a real phone.

    • coles group stores aren't meant to price match with each other. hope the poor kid doesn't get into too much trouble.

      • I didn't push at all. Heck I didn't know that. I just showed him the deal on my phone and asked if they price matched.

      • Hmm no mention of excluding Coles Group stores in the price match promise.
        http://www.kmart.com.au/pricepromise

    • Also you need a fast SD card.

The phone told me my SD card (8 GB Class 4 SanDisk) was slow. How much of an issue is that?

      • Sorry I have no idea. I stuck a Lexar 64GB 633x UHS-I class 10 when I saw the warning with a Sandisk ultra card. The Lexar card cost $30 from memory with 240 sandwich bags and the card reader, so that's about half the price of the phone. I got it via this deal:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/224903

I'll be happy to wipe the phone and start again if I want to reuse the card but I didn't want to start with problems, especially since I had this card lying around unused.

Same card on special with reader for $53.50 now…ouch!
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/254372

        • Can the phone address the whole 64 GB?

The specifications state a limit of 32 GB.

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

It's formatting to 58.70GB. A correction from my earlier report. Marshmallow is in fact warning that it's slow. But in practice it's fine.

I reformatted several times in an attempt to get both a public partition and a private internal (adopted) storage one using this trick but it did NOT work:
          http://blog.sam.liddicott.com/2016/02/android-6-semi-adopted…

  • Hi
Is that mean The max is 32G SD, so if I choose the SD as internal, then all the APP's and photo's, music and everything will use the leftover 4GB plus the arround 30GB (if I put the 32GB micro SD and select as internal). Just like iphone and some others without the SD card optional ?

    • Internal = encrypted. Can't be read using card reader on PC. All apps and pictures can go there by default.
External Storage = Unencrypted. Can be read using card reader on PC. Only photos and video, not apps.

  • My Alcatel came out of the box with 5.69 / 8 GB internal storage used. Is that right? o_0

Apps such as AVG have been preinstalled.

    • +1

Sadly yes. If you want to install a stack of apps get a fast microSD and adopt it as internal storage. It's a deceptively nice phone and it's easy to forget it was a <$60 bargain. It'll never be a flagship phone.

    • After a factory data reset the internal storage is at 4.42 / 8 GB.

What was taking up 1.27 GB? :/

      • Had you restored apps from another phone?

Warning: Don't migrate data to the phone if you're running out of storage. The transfer doesn't complete and so you never get the option to migrate it back to the external storage partition - you only repeatedly see the choice to move the rest of the data to the internal storage which is full.

        I HATE Marshmallow!

        • Nope.

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

I decided to try a factory reset too. After all this is a play phone even if I didn't fancy hours of reinstalling. I see the same thing - more memory after the factory reset. I'm in the process of reinstalling all the apps I had and more now. I'm still going to have to be selective about the apps I install but this is much less clostrophobic.

Summary: Anyone buying the phone and wanting to use it for lots of apps should stick a fast SD card in the thing (32GB and above) and immediately do a factory reset. Then format card as internal storage.

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

By uninstalling most apps that insist on using System memory I have now got 369 user + 203 system apps installed with over 1GB of the 8GB free. Some of this will no doubt be used up by the apps I've not removed despite them being internal so I'm anticipating having to cull perhaps another 10 apps. I'm satisfied given that its a $59 phone but did I mention I HATE Marshmallow? ;-)

  • Anyone been able to get this unlocked ( not through Optus )?

  • Is this sale now over?

  • Can anyone who's activated the included Optus Sim tell me how much credit it comes with? Is it $30 or $10?

    • From my experience activating the included sim ( and other with included with a ZTE Blade D a week ago ), no included credit.
Must re-charge or get a different starter pack. Coles has $10 starter packs for $2 on sale now, also Optus $10 starter packs too for $2 now.

      • Thanks. I'll just use it on WIFI for now.

  • +1

Just an update the unlock code Optus sent me last week didnt work so i got back onto optus chat and they sent me the same code again today ,what is going on i never failed before with an unlock code from Optus.

    • +1

Can also confirm paul's experience, my Optus provided unlock code does not work either. Will update once resolved.

      • +1

Ok i just got an email from optus and they said Alcatel gave them 5 codes to try and luckily the first one worked so its now unlocked and im in the Philippines so my local sim now works thanks to Optus.

  • +2

I have successfully unlocked mine free today

contacted Alcatel AU and told them optus were saying the phone was not locked
but when inserting another sim it was asking for code so i provided my Imei
had the codes emailed about a hour later and the first code provided unlocked it
for me free of charge now let the Alactel calls begin.

    • Did you do this via the internet or on phone call?

      • +1

It was a phone call then they emailed me codes.

  • +1

Does anyone which Target will I get these at? I'm in Melbourne East.

Edit: Just called Target Forest Hill, they're selling it at full price.

    Thanks

    • +1

It's back to full price again. I just been at Target Parramatta today.

    • +1

Looking at the photo, there's 31/07/16 on each ticket.

  • +2

I successfully managed to unlock 3G band 5 (850MHz) on this device using QPST. Root access is required however.

    • Any chance giving a simple step by step instruction on how to do this?

Did you unlock yours via the Alcatel AU phone/internet?

      Thanks in advance :-)

  • For Alcatel 5051X, am waiting on a code from http://www.cellunlocker.net/unlock-alcatel.php , will let you know how it all goes.
Bit pricey, AUD$20. Maybe because not many sites can unlock this phone. Demand/Supply :(

  • Re the Pop4 (Optus locked and un-rooted).

I did the factory reset and formatted a card to internal. I then tried to offline install some apks. Was able to navigate to the folder, but would get "Unable to open file" or similar if I tried to run them. This was even with unknown sources enabled (just Android 6 I'm guessing).
There is a way, but it's slow.

Install the Alcatel Smart Suite to your PC.
When it's running, you'll see two apps offered on the right. They reside in the following path:
    \Program Files (x86)\Smart Suite\data\Apks

Take your own APKs and dump them in that folder. You'll also notice an XML file in the same folder.
Simply change the file names (copy-paste), run Smart Suite and two of them will appear on the right with Install button under each.

Because of the design layout, only two apps can be installed on each execution of Smart Suite. Once they're done, click "disconnect" and quit Smart Suite (very important reason aside from no dynamic poll/refresh). Then just modify the XML

First time, I didn't quit the program in a way it found acceptable and it stopped working…big hassle, but ended up reinstalling it. As a piece of software it's quite flakey.

  • Did anyone managed to unlock the Alcatel 4G phone? Keen to know.

    • I did see my posts above.

      • I did read that. But will alcatel send unlock code without question? I don't know if they made an exception for you.

        • i just told them optus said it wasn't locked to their network and i needed to contact alcatel they were happy to provide it to me free of charge.

        • @stevednj48: ok thnx.
