  • Dual sim? Must be bargain if you can use two sims simultaneously

    • No, this is the Optus version, and the carriers always cripple dual-SIM capability.
You need to get an unlocked phone for dual SIM.

How is the display on this? Bright enough for outdoor use? Could be good for a dedicated car navigation or bike computer.
And the other question for a cheap smartphone: how decent is the battery life in real use?

      • the display concern would be the resolution, its FWVA, galaxy s2 era, usable if you dont care but pixels are visible.

  • how can we be sure this is the dual sim version? i doubt it, carriers almost always strip this function out

  • Nice picture you took OP couldnt be more fuzzy?!

    • Yeah, well he used the camera from the phone to take it. What do you expect for a $50 phone.

  • Is this a better deal than the Telstra 4GX Buzz (haven't been able to find one locally)? It if makes a difference, it will be used on Telstra.
Also, could my son play Pokemon Go on this?

    Thanks

this one (blade d) lacks support for telstra 3g 850MHz band. So, it will only be able to use old 2g network which will be shutdown by end of this year.

      • +1

You make it sound as though it won't work on Telstra at all after 2g shuts down.
A quick search shows that isn't the case, it has 3G - 2100 MHz which Telstra uses.

        • My understanding is that they use different frequencies in different areas… 850 is mainly used in metro areas where it is better suited for dealing with building & other obstructions & 2100 is used in more rural areas due to the better range???
(disclaimer: I may very well be talking out of my arse, but that is my general understanding)

        • @ozdavo: luckily I speak Fart. i understand.

        • +1

          @ozdavo:
Close, but other way round. 2100 for cities and 850/900 for regional/rural areas for 3G.

        • +1

@ozhunter68: Thanks, so the takeaway is you NEED 3G 850mhz if you want to reliability on Telstra.

        • +1

          @ozdavo:
Yes, if moving around regional and rural areas. The Telstra and Boost network providers only give the full NextG 850MHz support. Other re-sellers only part of the 3G network, even if your phone supports that band. Confused??? Look at the Telstra WiKi or read more on Whirlpool. Worth it for future reference.

      • Thank you.

      • What about 4G / LTE ?

      • I think it does band 28

      • All these chipsets should have full support of those most popular bands, they might just have been disabled as requested by operators/manufacturers. As this phone seems to have a Qualcomm chipset, if you wish to dig deeper check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-add…

For MTK chipsets, simply download MTK engineering apk and you are good to set the phone free.

bought this couple days ago for the sole purpose of playing pokemon go on it. the only small issue is no ar, other than that, very happy with it.

edit: haven't put any simcard into it as it is locked to optus, been using wifi or teetering from another mobile phone.

      • +1

Thanks for that. Was toying with getting one for my daughter for exactly the same reason.

        Glad to hear it works.

I usually turn the AR off anyway.

  • 1gb ram…nowadays is not enough.

For most people I think it is. For pokemon go players, it may not be.

I purchase two last week and unlock both, My son replace it with G526, another one for spare and I try root it as well. It can be rooted using Kingoroot. Yes it can play Pokemon Go. I try my Telstra prepaid , it still work (making calls and received calls and Data as well), even no 3G 850 in this phone. I like that 5" screen so try this one. But Kmart selling in store only with Optus LG leon $50 4.5" screen with 3G 850,900,2100 good for all phone company.

Got one myself. The touchscreen fails to pick up some of my touches. Also the 5 inch screen looks quite pixelated plus the viewing angle is poor. Would recommend a ZTE ZIP on special at Coles for $34.50. Much better screen IMHO.

  • How does this compare with the Optus pixi 4.5 (on sale for $30/$35/$40 at various times)? It seems roughly similar.

The LG Leon (kmart sale $50) is also similar, but has an IPS display.

the pixi's been superseded by the ZTE ZIP, cheaper (for optus), smaller and fewer band support. Still does B28 which is what everyone's after. NO idea how good the touch screen sensitivity is, the pixi's was complete shit however

      • Thanks - all changes seem better for optus, not consumers (unless they prefer a smaller phone).

BTW I tried the pixi in an optus store, and the touch sensitivity was terrible. More false clicks than true. Actually unusable. Staff told me it was because of the grip of the display holder… When I bought one it was fine; very occasionally need to press harder, but 100% usable.

I enjoy buying and testing some of these cheaply priced reasonably speced 1GB ram/Quad core phones to test out or back up phone or friends going O/S etc. I prefer prepaid phones that have both the 850 and 900MHz band as I can use for all carriers when unlocked, and the more 4G bands the better.

I had a Huawie Y550 which although not perfect, I really liked and recommended to a lot of friends and family. Works really well on Vodafones 4G network. Main weak point was low Rom about 1GB user memory only. Bought for $45 with $50 sim starter pack included.

Tried out an Optus ZTE Fit Smart that was a bit faster with more memory for apps etc, slightly better touchscreen, but shorter battery life and colours not so bright. Oh, also no 850 love there. Paid $49 with sim + $4 starter credit. In rural/regional areas only good for Optus with the 900MHz 3G band.

Jumped on an Optus Alcatel Pixi 3 4.5 for the dual 850/900MHz option and for the crazy price of $34.50. Read a lot of reviews first as I had doubts on the quality of the touchscreen, but after reading that putting a glass screen protector on it really improves touch input I went ahead and took a punt. Was really surprised with how it worked with glass screen and a steal for that price, Android 5.1.1 nice too.

Latest phone to test is the Optus ZTE Blade D from Woolworths. This has a fairly large 5" screen for the price, not HD and bright, but very usable for a low cost phone. Will look better and have better input when my glass screen protector arrives ( great trick/improvement for these cheaper phones at low cost from ebay ). Works well for the price with much improved power/volume buttons compared to the Fit, and usb socket now much better ( for me ) on the bottom and running Android 5.1.1. Although only has the Optus 900MHz 3G band ( same as Fit ), this is a great phone for the low cost of $49.50 on sale still now at Woolies. Even for the higher price of $79 on sale still good value.

As long as your expectations of these low cost phones are realistic, and you don't expect great cameras and super crisp screens, these phones work pretty well and speedy, even faster than my Nexus 4 ( only 3G ) for internet use on Optus/Voda and Telstra in most of my area if you have the right low cost phone that supports 3G/4G bands in your area with your carrier.
