better of avoiding Telstra and going with a $10 365 day with Amaysim (Pay as you go)

    • +1

Unfortunately Amaysim coverage isn't as good as Telstra. I've experienced in some metro locations in Perth. Only Telstra and Boost have a signal.

      • +1

fair point, in your case it would be to keep the number active, and technically i think the number doesn't get reassigned until 12 months after the expiry too

        • There are other uses of this casual plan mentioned in previous posts. Some people such as elderly and kids are given this plan for emergencies.

          • +2

@trixieb: It's good for the first 6 months (because of the discounted rate), but after 6 months, it's $39. If you must have Telstra or Boost, then I guess there is no choice.

If Telstra wholesale network is acceptable, Aldi mobile $15 Pay as you go for 365 days (obviously Amaysim is cheaper if you don't need Telstra).

    • for traveling overseas it was annoying with Amaysim, couldn't do any SMS authentication. Will make sure to move over to Aldi before traveling next time.

      • +2

I’m on amaysim, keen to understand what you mean as I’m travelling soon to Asia. Two years ago, I can receive text messages without any issues. Thanks

      • +3

Amaysim Customer here for over 5 years. Travelled YSA, Bali, Canda, India, China i have not missed single incoming SMS. may be you need to change your settings.

        • ok I must be doing something wrong. I was in Japan this past month and could not receive any SMS. What settings did I need to change?

        • Same thing I could not get any messages this time when travelled to India a month ago

        • I never had issues with getting sms on Amaysim and Catch Connect/Onepass Mobile when in China, HK and NZ. Not sure why some people say they don’t get sms. Could be settings or phone issue?

      • +1

I have no such issue with amaysim.

      • +1

fwiw, Boost with Wifi calling enabled works great overseas, been using them for years (no roaming)

    • +3

Amaysim AYG plan is now $15 for 365 days.

      • You can buy $10 recharge voucher from WWS. I just did this last week.

        • Were you able to use the $10 recharge voucher to recharge PAYG for another 365 days?

      • -1

Which plan see long term plan for 365 days is for$240

    • +2

The inclusions of this Telstra SIM should work better for me. I've just activated the one from the last deal and ported out from Amaysim.

With Amaysim I went through the $10 credit on average in about 3 months. Just calling or texting people who don't pick up on any other number. Plus coverage. Having some data included for an emergency is nice too.

      • Anyone know how to buy more than one? I need 3 - one for each person in my family.
        Thanks.

  • Can this be use for Apple Watch?

    • Telstra One Number is not available for prepaid mobile plans I think.

    • I think you need a postpaid with number share for apple watch. or use family share (which is basically kids mode and severely limits the watch IMO). There is no work around to use Apple Watch just with eSim like some of the Android equivalent. Happy to be proven wrong.

      • As far as I know, watches (Pixel 2 Watch 4G in my case) can only be used with a really expensive Telstra post paid plan.

Assume any android watches are the same?

      • You can buy cheap More eSIM that same number works on phone and Apple Watch, plus if you are commbank customer or have commbank yellow further discounts are available

        • Wow they must be the first MVNO to offer that!

    • You can buy a eSIM for apple watch so your watch will have a separate phone number to your phone. Costs $99/year, with unlimited data, calls and SMS, but your watch has to be put into kids' mode, which loses some functionality. Kids' mode used to be called family mode.

      Here's the website: https://www.betterroaming.com/watches/apple-watch-family-aus…

There are posts here on OzBargain about this eSIM, see:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/878593
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/846586

Make sure you read up about kids' mode, so you know what it can and can't do.

    • Maybe check out Tangerine. I think it’s the only prepaid carrier that lets you share your number with Apple Watch, and it uses the Telstra wholesale mobile network.

I got one from the previous $13 deal and just activated it yesterday. SIM had an expiry of close to 1 year.

They just sent a regular $39 SIM pack, and during activation I had to make sure to pick the "Casual Plan".

    400MB is diabolical in 2025.
I honestly thought it was a typo at the start.

fine for IoT or real basic smartphones, but I didn't realise anything with MB was still sold

    • it's fine for turning data off for most everything except, say, banking apps

    • +2

it's good for a secondary line.

I use the 365 day version of this payg plan (with basically double the inclusions for double the price), technically speaking the amaysim/aldi payg options are cheaper but i do have a need to make the occassional call or sms (couple times a month) from that specific line.
Data i don't use at all as i use my main line for that, but in a pinch i've found it handy when I couldn't get any reception with my primary (vodafone) line.

  • +1

Also incoming calls are free so good deal to keep as an backup phone number. If you're a sole trader or run a small business you can use this number to adversite and get spams and return important calls using your regular phone

110 minutes of calls to standard Australian numbers.

  • link shows 28day exp ?

    • +2

Scroll & choose "Casual Plan" in the link.

      • Just wondering if the $39 prepaid pack is generic
and you can choose between 28 days or 6 months?

        • +1

Yes, you can choose during activation. From memory, it defaults to 28 days plan so make sure you change it if you want the casual plan.

  • These are also good for signing up new gyg accounts. Just go to a jb and download gyg app on a display phone then delete when a free burrito is secured.

    • +3

Haha, this made me laugh. The true Ozbargainer.

      • +3

        But wait there's more!

Another meme is to use the payphones for certain tasks; uber eats new account verification can be done by the code via voice call instead of SMS. Most payphones use unique mobile numbers.

        • Impressive

  • So, can this plan receive SMS oversea?

    • yes

Pricebeat at Officeworks to get this for $12.35

    • Officeworks don’t price match Telstra!!

      • I was successful. It went to a senior member for approval and i got confirmation today.

  • $13 offer not available on eSIM.

Can I buy physical SIM and then change to eSIM?
    Thanks

  • if this phone is used on wifi then RCS chat shouldn't use the included SMS correct?

    • Is rcs available in Australia now?

  • I got one of these last deal charged my card the full $39, took me 3.5 weeks to get a refund with 4 chat sessions over that period but finally got a refund. Good deal for kids phone.

    https://imgur.com/a/EO366hs

    • Glad to hear you got a refund to pay for your Father's Day dumpling lunch.

That's odd Telstra charged $39 instead of $13. Did it show $13 or $39 at the checkout page?

      It shows $13 currently.

  • Off topic but wanted some guidance.

I had a Telstra (JB Hi-Fi) plan and cancelled the connection. Is there a way to get same number once again by any chance?

    • It’s doable but can be complicated. A number goes into quarantine for 6 months before going back into the pool for reallocation. Contact them and ask

  • -1

390 mb is actually ridiculous. Do they come with a floppy disk to store any excess data?

  • I already have telstra $39 sim which I've got with the phone, does anyone know if it is possible to choose Casual Plan (6-Month Expiry) when activating?

  • This is good to pair with pixel 7 deal. Then unlock $25

  • Dumb question, if i buy this sim kit using my own telstra points, can i later activate it under my mum's name, porting her amaysim number in? thx!

    • +1

      Yes.

  • This would be good to allow you to have an active account to be able to get cheaper movie tickets etc. the $13 cost would be made back with the savings from a single adult movie tickets alone. That’s if people still go to the cinemas these days.
