I'm after a decent-good knife set like the Global Ikasu 7 piece.
The cheapest place I can find is yourhomedepot.com.au for $299 delivered, but they don't have stock. The next is petersofkensington.com.au and that's $319 + $25 p&h.
I was wondering if anyone knows of any good sales that I might be able to pick something like that up at? I live in Perth.

Hmm, you'd need a good special to see anything like that price now.
The 7-piece is USD $203.93 at Amazon right now. Estimating $US20 for both Amazon's and PriceUSA's shipping costs + insurance (I think this'd be a low estimate?) plus the 2.5 cent exchange rate charge and the 5% service charge… It'd be about $AUD290.
Which is a bit more expensive than Peter's of Kensington at $254 + p/h.
But I hadn't noticed that 7 piece Henckels set at PoK so thanks for pointing it out.
That said, looking at specials on Amazon does anyone have an opinion on the J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 7-piece? Or the J.A. Henckels International Classic Forged 7-Piece? Or the Wusthof Grand Prix II 8-Piece Knife Set with Block? Or the J.A. Henckels Twin Pro-S 5-Piece Gift Set? Or the J.A. Henckels Twin Signature 7-Piece Knife Set with Block?

Although the Wusthof one does look like great value. I could probably get it here for around $350 and the closest I can find it in Aus is for $525 and places like Myer/David Jones sell it around $1,000.

yah there are so many choices.. basically i had a budget in mind of under $200USD and looked at Henckels and Wusthof. I looked at the "chef"/"pro" range from each brand.. and I remember for Henckels it was Four Star/Twin four star II. The 8 Piece Henckels set was really good value because it had an 8" Chef's knife as well as a 7" Santoku (japanese style) knife which acts as a 2nd chef knife.. and one of my fav. knives for cutting fish and veges.
You can also have a look at the 7 piece set.@ $170. You get a 5" santoku knife instead of 7".
As for the other ranges… I have only tried the International Forged Synergy 8" bread knife which was missing my set…I was surprised at the at the quality..

We got chef tony knives (tv informercial) from ebay shipped from usa. It was under $70 and pretty good value for money.
I've found the Wusthof GP II 8-pce set for $275 USD (around $330) delivered from here. That's $200 + $75 shipping, but bypasses any forwarding proxies and has a quick, secure delivery time (about a week).
It comes with a bonus Wusthof Knife Sharpener, Cutting Board & DVD.
Seems like a great deal.
EDIT Ooer. Henckels 4 star 8 pce = $207 USD (~$245) delivered from the same place. Better option, methinks.
That Henckels set from the same place is same set I got. I found I still needed a big bread knife though. Good price shipped for $207USD.

Earlier this year I also went to look for a decent set of knives. Haven't used good knives before I mainly did my research online and went to a few knive shops and tried some out..
Generally I found the price in Australia (at least for the German made brands) to be really over-priced. You can try the big outlets like DFO/Harbour Town or similar in your state. There are a couple of kitchen accessory outlets that has quite a few sets on display for you to hold and feel…. I tried a few brands (Analon, Global, and others).. which were all around $250-$400 mark…
However, I ended up buying a set of 8 piece (including block)of J.W. Henckels Four Star which was on special at $150 USD and had it sent over (had a shipping forwarder do this, you can also try PriceUSA) With the postage it end up costing about $220AUD at the time ( January this year). I saw a similar set, with only 7 piece was selling at $500-$600 at DJ/Myer.
I am not an expert , so I am not sure how Henckels compare with others brands.. But along with Wustof ( even more expensive) , they seems to be two of the most recommended brand on Amazon . Personally I am very happy with the Henckels 4 Star set i got…very good quality, feels very balanced and sharp.
