Dear OzBargain, What Do You Name Your Computer?

I am sure that OzBargainers would have some clever naming schemes, so let's hear them.

I do computer support for a small creative company. They have the long running tradition of naming their servers after diseases (because they can get sick with viruses):

    Scurvy
    Rubella
    Bali-belly
    Smallpox
    Dyptheria
    Tinea
    SARS
..and the latest one from this year:
    Zika

  • In typical days of being being an IT support admin:

First three letters of corporation - Designation of machine - machine ID

    E.g ESTTAB001, ESTLAP002, ESTDES003, ESTSRV004.

    • Yes but hopefully the OP isn't restricted to boring names.

      • Each to their own, but these designations are what I'm using and happy with.

  • Mr Computer.

    Then Sharlene.

  • For home I use my name and the CPU model.
For work I use the serial number of the PC as they're usually Dell's or HP's.

  • AVALANCHE.

Drives are named Cloud, Barrett, Cait Sith, Yuffie, and Red XIII. I have flash drives called Bustersword and Materia.

Oh, I also had an external HDD called Aeris. It died and I lost a lot of my data. I suppose that was a poor naming choice…

    • You, my good sir, win.

Also I would call that a good choice for calling it Aeris (If you're not lying)

  • Every device in my home is named after planets from the Dune series of books. There's no shortage of them, so I should be good for a couple more computers. :)

  • I give mine back stories that suit their roles and name them appropriately.

For example, Fred is my NAS. He's an older gentleman that is very friendly and helpful. He's a hoarder but he doesn't mind sharing. He's also very social but you have to make the first move because he's shy.

My hardware firewall/av on the other hand is named Frank. Frank is very brash and gets all up in everyone elses business to the the point sometimes they just stop talking to him for awhile. His methods might be all wrong but his heart is in the right place and he ultimately just wants to see everyone safe.

The desktop I'm on right now is Leonardo. He is quite intelligent but mostly he's the creative artsy type. He doesn't like to play with others but does it well when he has to. Guess what I use Leonardo for mostly.

I have plenty more but you get the point.

    • MS paint me like one of your french websites.

  • My main computer(Nice black tower): BATMAN
    Secondary Computer: ROBIN
Laptop: THINKTANK (It's a Levnovo 'Think' Brand)
Mobile: GoldenEye (as it's a rose gold phone)
    Printer: Inkheart
Tablet: TecTab (as it's a Teclast)

    • Sometimes you have to let their character come out and you'll know what to call it.
