Coles MasterCard - No Flybuys for Bpay Transactions from October 13

Just got the letter from Latitude that as of October 13, they will stop giving flybuys points for BPay transactions. This is a big deal for me as I use it primarily for bill payments and have enjoyed the 1% return through $10 off at the Coles cash register. Now I'll cancel and look for an alternate. Thought some of you might be in a similar situation and appreciate the heads up.

I'm pretty disappointed as this card did everything I wanted without me having to think about whether my airplane ticket allows upgrades, whether the merchant charges a surcharge for Amex, whether the annual fee hop to a new credit card was damaging my credit rating … I'm sad to see this go :(

    They give you points for bpay transactions? Wow, wish I knew this sooner.

    It's annoying, but at least Latitude sent out a letter about this one, rather than the debacle with 28 Degrees.

    If you pay bills directly through the provider will that be okay, is it just Bpay or all bill payments? Looking at regular bills it seems I pay all of them online directly to the provider, hopefully that will still be possible? Otherwise it's a big issue indeed.

  • Excluded Transactions means:
    (1) Cash advances;
    (2) purchases of foreign currency, travellers cheques, convenience cheques, casino gambling chips, or telegraphic transfers;
    (3) credit fees and charges payable in connection with your Credit Account;39
    (4) interest charges payable in connection with your Credit Account;
    (5) government fees and charges payable in connection with your Credit Account;
    (6) transactions Wesfarmers Finance decides are disputed or fraudulent or involve abuse of your Credit Account or a Card;
    (7) transactions Wesfarmers Finance decides are wholly or partly for business purposes;
    (8) payments credited to your Credit Account;
    (9) purchase transactions refunded or reimbursed as they are posted to your Credit Account;
    (10) adjustments resulting from disputed transactions or otherwise; and
    (11) Balance transfers;
    (12) Transactions Conducted Via BPAY

    • Are they the new terms as of Oct 13? I would say by that wording that bills paid directly to the provider would still earn points then so not so bad.

      (5) government fees and charges payable in connection with your Credit Account

      They were previously included, when paying a tax debt I always got points which was another bonus with the card. Coles MC told me over the phone that they were included also (wasn't a case of getting points I shouldn't have).

        yep, bills paid directly to the provider will still earn points, also something new will be a charge of $2.25 if you process a payment in store as of April 2017

  • The other change they made is that you cannot give to others the BPay details to pay your credit card account. It is only for your use.
    This may affect the ability to make balance transfers from other credit cards, which is a pretty good thing when you get a credit card with a 12 months interest free and fee free BT offer. They normally send the BT through BPay.

  • Hi Naomieve,
    Thanks for raising this issue - I immediately phoned to complain & told them that I thought there would be lots of negative feedback about this change - not being able to use your M/Card and still get Flybuys points for paying via BPay - either through a bill directly or over the phone.
    They said its "a business decision" - end of story.
    We were able to pay everything this way, either for shopping or paying bills & was able to collect our Flybuys points to Flybuys Dollars to use to pay for extra's for groceries for christmas etc.
    Feel ripped off, after being with Flybuys since their beginning & also with Coles Mastercard for many many years. I wondered what others thought of these changes, glad to see a forum here raising these issues.
    No way around the BPay thing though, is there?
    Not sure its worth the $69.00 Annual Fee to not get the whole benefit of getting Flybuys now. You can get the credit card without Flybuys benefits for zilch.

  • Most bills give you the choice of paying via Bpay or pay by phone with the provider giving the credit card number (mostly is an automated phone service). I think this way it still registers as a credit card payment and you get the points. Only negative is that essentially you give the provider all your credit card details.
    Note that a lot of providers charge a fee for paying bills by credit card, but that applies to Bpay payment as well.

  • More and more BPay merchants are not accepting BPay from a credit card. Who were you paying to that do?
    I've found the majority of my utility and other assorted bills won't let me pay from a CC anymore.
