Crucial 8GB DDR3 ECC Unbuffered 1866MHz Ram $55.20 Delivered (Gen8 ProL, ML10v2) @ Dick Smith by Kogan on eBay

Just bought a ML10v2 + 1TB from warehouse1 at ~$199 (no pick up stock at 169), did a bit of reading about OS and it seems that with FreeNAS 8gb minimum is now required. Last time deal was posted on compatible ram it was Kingston at around $60, but this is compatible and works out to be ~$55

Compatibility listed here http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Comp…

  • That's a fantastic price if compatible. I bought this server when it was $99 and followed RadioBirdmans suggestion https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255264#comment-3820154 of putting expenology on it. With 4gb it runs really well with the 3x3tb hard drives I have installed. The only criticism of the set up is that the fan is a tad noisy.

    • I'm thinking of putting windows server 2012 r2 on it. What are your thoughts?

      • I have WSE2012 on a hp n40l microserver and it goes well enough with 8gb of ram and an intel nic. So the ML10v2 should kick ass. The only problem with running windows server is the BS of creating and then joining a domain. Not that it's hard to do but it's a bit of a pain logging in on a home network. Automatic backups with windows server are pretty cool. I used StableBit drivepool to manage the disks. You can't go wrong with windows server, plus if you want you can get into virtualization it. However, for ease of use I can't recommend Xpenology high enough.

        • I had a quick look but doesn't look like an easy setup. Is there an instruction somewhere?

  • ah damn! i just bought this last night last minute on 15% ebay off.

I am not too sure if it will be compatible with my Proliant ML10 v2.

@besmirched, i agree, bit disappointed with the noisy fan! not sure if it can be manually controlled via speedfan or something similar. I have it sitting next to N40L and bid noise difference.
