Paying Bills Using Wish Gift Card

Hi guys,

Has anyone tried to pay a (utilities) bill using Wish Gift Cards as the method of payment. So either at a woolies or through BPay? Just trying to stretch the 5% off cashrewards deal.

Cheers,
Paaj

    • A simple "no" would have sufficed. but thanks for taking the time to link the other page.

Imo, Most people who say or ask stupid things don't realise it and maybe because they dont realise it, they keep doing it and keep making a fool out of themselves. Ignorance wont help you in the future. Better to be told here in an anonymous place like here, than be laughed at in person at work etc.

I pay my utilities using iTunes and Steam gift cards. I also pay for my groceries at Woolies with a Coles giftcard.

    /facepalm

Do you do that while running red lights, because the bonut hasn't been checked?

        mmm bonuts

        • reminds of donuts…. yummm…

      Thank you for the sarcasm.

To be blunt, it was a pretty stupid question, using a supermarket gift card to pay off a utilities bill …

        • +2

It's more stupid to not ask. This is OzBargain afterall ; )

we used to be able to pay bills at the supermarket (I think)..so just a question in the same line of thought.

        • Asking a question about saving money is stupid?

          @dlf73:

It's not. But asking to pay bills with Wish gift cards or at Woolies is. Considering the list of places that accept Wish gift cards is listed on their website.

It's like asking if Woolies will accept Coles giftcards. People need to think first.

I don't think it's a stupid question and the commenters above are acting like jerks.

Can you pay your utilities at the checkout?

Dumb question, and some great/funny responses by some..

but hey give them a break.

Ozbargainers are pretty clever, maybe someone actually worked out a way to game the system, its been done before.

Slim chance but like most I was curious to see if it had been done. 😀

  • Definitely No. However, thinking more about it…we can put money on our Opal card and recharge our Vodafone and other prepaid mobiles at Woolies. There's always a possibility that Woolies may go a step further and allow paying post paid mobile bills too and then extend it to other service providers (including utilities).

its not a stupid question, i use gift cards with 5.5% discount to top up my opal at a woolies that has opal top ups

    • +1

That's recharging and completely different to paying utilities like electricity, water and gas. You don't pay for your Opal card on a quarterly basis

      • Similar principle though, paying for a service provided by an external entity. Yes, it is different but not to the extent of calling the OP stupid.

        • +1

I don't think it is because you don't get a bill for Opal cards or mobile recharges which needs to be paid by a due date.

        • Why not go one step further, is it stupid to wonder if you can pay your home loan with x bank at woolies? What about paying with woolies gift cards? Similar principle right?

          @kerfuffle:

I guess its just how you look at it, can see both sides, but the fact that there is debate shows how its not so outlandish, if i can buy darrell lea chocolate and pay for my electricity bill at a post office, all without buying stamps, is it so far out of the realms of possibility that you could pay for a post paid bill in a supermarket.

Its just account numbers and bits. With supermarkets pushing further in all directions to drive traffic, it wont be long before you can pay bills there, especially with QR codes now popping up next to the BPAy box on bills.

I think on the contrary, supermarkets are doing everything they can to cut staff numbers. Having someone there to help pay bills is something they wouldn't want to deal with, especially as (let's be honest here) the main ones that will want to pay a bill at the supermarket will be seniors, and you can bet that it won't be a simple transaction.

Leave it to the Post Offices, supermarkets don't need to offer that sort of service.

          :P

        • @Spackbace:

If its just scanning a bar code, there's not much work when it can be a differentiator as to which supermarket you choose.

I cant see it being any more cumbersome than ordering more credit on a pre paid phone or buying a gift card in store. Considering they are doing ebay click and collect from woolworths, nothing is more time consuming than that beast

buying a gift card in store

Oh that's right, the transaction where they don't allow payment by gift cards… ;)

        • i'd like to be able to use a google play store card to top up a google play store card, sit there with a bunch of them, compounding a 10% discount offer :)

on the inconvenience thing for staff though, have you seen how they top up opal cards, there is normally a single card reader that they have to take you opal card to, top it up and then process the receipt at the register, surely bill payments cant be more complex than that.

the stores do get a % commission on opal sales (the only document i seen was 2.5% but this was during the trial so it may have increased since then). on a $50 top up thats only $1.25, take out 1% for the card fee and leave leaves a hefty 75 cents for the retailer. Given the poor return on it, i'm still surprised i can use my 5.5% discounted e-gift card to top it up. Woolies must be losing more than 5.5% on the gift card sale as the card retailer needs their cut, plus to overhead costs.

        • @Mister LoLPants:
They probably do it as a loss leader to get you in the store. Plus a lot of money is left to expire on gift cards. You have to remember not everyone is as savvy with money as us ozbargainers.
