Insight into Centrecom Pricing

Well, I just got off livechat with centrecom and after the sales representative was trying to get out of his web he just ended the live chat completely.

I asked if there were any new keyboards coming, he said Kingston, he also gave a picture which is here:
http://1u88jj3r4db2x4txp44yqfj1.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-c…

He said no ETA and it cost about $47 USD which is the supplier cost, and then he said it'll probably be in the store for $90 because of USD to AUD conversion, then I did my own little conversion and it happened to be $60 AUD. Then I found the exact keyboard on the website and given by the image URL he gave me it was HyperX Alloy FPS and on the website which is this: http://www.centrecom.com.au/kingston-hyperx-alloy-fps-mechan… and also found on mwave for the same price and I brought that up to him, saying if you're getting it from the supplier for $47 USD and you're selling it for $159 AUD that's $100 profit. He then started to lie saying that it was a different keyboard and that it was mem-chanical which I googled and it doesn't exist and he quickly ended chat.

What do you guys think about the margin they're making on these keyboards? I'd like to know.

I don't think he's suppose to be sharing the supplier's price with you. Mistakes were made :)

    • -4

I know, just went in again now he is saying, oh I gave the price of a headset. Lol it keeps getting better. It went from mechanical keyboard to mem-chanical keyboard non backlit to headset. But honestly, if they're setting these prices because they're a monopoly that is just wicked.

      • +1

That does make a scerrick of sense- given that the same time they released the keyboard, they released a headset targeting the <$50 mark.

        • -3

I understand, but why say oh, wrong keyboard this is a kingston mem-chancial non backlit for $47, then end chat straight away.If you google Kingston doesn't even have one coming out so it is an obvious lie and cover up.

        • @PaoloSwings:
          http://venturebeat.com/2016/09/22/kingstons-hyperx-introduce…

and I'll repeat my comment from below:
"…I'm more inclined to believe that Matt just ballsed up the price he gave to you and then tried to cover himself (not well, but I don't think there was any real ill intent there)…"

  • If they're making that margin, so is everyone else, as they're charging around the same as PC Case Gear and MWave. I'm more inclined to believe that Matt just ballsed up the price he gave to you and then tried to cover himself (not well, but I don't think there was any real ill intent there).

I know, but $100 profit, seems a bit extravagant.

      • If there was really $100 profit, would you not expect pccasegear or mwave or others drop their Price by $10 and pull the rug from under centrecom?
Have you searched for this product in us based stores for pri e comparison?

        • +3

What you mean before creating a profile just to have this whinge and make the guy from Centre Com's day shitty? Nah, why would he do that?

        • @Adz81: Oh please you are thinking the worst of people…ha ha ha
I can see the OP probably shitty about the staff member saying different keyboard, but i think, unless someone can prove otherwise, the pricing for the keyboard, at $159 is accurate, and not a rip off! It does seem the staff member could do with some further training, maybe Ryan needs to come back!

        • @dlf73: It does seem like Matt's a little green around the gills, but I'll bet you right now he's learned a lesson today :D

        • @Adz81: it does and I hope he has too. Hoefully he takes it in his stride and becomes a great asset to centrecom.

Apparently this isn't out in US yet so can't really compare, but aren't you jumping to conclusions?

People make mistakes, it is possible he quoted an incorrect product's price. Wait til it comes out in other countries and then judge based on that. It's not out yet, but legitreviews said that it was likely to be priced around $100 US in stores.

Welcome to Australia, where everything is expensive compared to America!

    • +1

And welcome to America where everything is expensive compared to Honduras.

    • +1

yep, life is cheap in the US.

      • Oh, that a dig at police?

        • +1

nah, more that everything is cheap, wages, quality of health care, quality of social services - all poor.

  • Commerce 101 for those that works in sales or runs a business: You never reveal how much your goods cost you. People can use this to leverage bargaining power.

If you knew a sandwich costs $2.00 to make, and the cafe is selling them for $6 each, you're probably not going to buy it, or you might complain to the sandwich maker that they're charging too much. You lose the sale.

And in this case, poor Matt was a crap sales rep and he just lost a potential customer, plus now everyone on ozbargain knows how much the margin is.

    • +1

Yeah, I honestly believe that Matt gave the price for the wrong item. Otherwise all of the stockists for this product are making a $100ish margin, and if there's a $47 product out there with the potential for a 200% markup and I'm not a part of it… Then dammit, I'll be typing in CAPS for a long time.

    • +1

I think you would be better off saying Matt is maybe inexperienced, or made a boo boo, rather than being crap.
Now everyone on ozbargain knows that a $100 margin is not accurate!

OP, David Allure, why do you have so much free time on your hands? Here is another post of yours on whirlpool.. https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2568919

The other posters were right, you are such a time-waster, wasting the sales-peoples time, your time, our time. Stick to gumtree…

Here is your chat transcript for everyone that wants to read how your a big-time time-burglar…

Wow, I have no real love for Centrecom, but this OP is an asshat, pure & simple.

      • +1

Phew tell us what you really think…hahaha.
I think it may be safe to say they thought they were being lied to and then everything that followed was, well, kneejerk!
I think OP and Matt can bot say I could have handled that better.

        • +3

That transcript clearly shows the OP kicked off with a pretty piss poor attitude; possibly even an overt troublemaking agenda; customer service staff shouldn't have to put up with arrogance like that.

        • +3

@StewBalls: I think even before getting to the issue the OP had, asking if they are as knowledgeable as Ryan is a little insulting too!

  • +2

    LOL WUT

  • +1

you're getting it from the supplier for $47 USD and you're selling it for $159 AUD that's $100 profit. H

This must be some dream business. Many computer shops in oz would be making more like 5% to 10%, if they're lucky.

  • Excluding the crap in the OP centrecom do seem to always be more expensive than mwave, pccasegear etc

    • +4

      The OP is a moron

Whirlpool already smashed his stupid comments over there lol

Most shops would barely charge prices over the top of they wouldnt be operating today

To assume and make lies about a person or company is also defamation and the OP should be very careful about leaking chats and private information out from a company irrespective of what was said

There's no way they're marking up that much or no one would shop there, the prices may be higher due to the amount they import of the overheads of their business and legally they can charge what they want on a product but it all comes down to smart and savvy shoppers vs the people who want it now and just don't care for convienience and paying a little more isn't a big deal to them

  • +1

I used to work at PC Case Gear and can tell you right now, most items over $50 were marked up 2-5%. There would be the occasional item that would be 10%.

  • Any updates OP?

    • -5

      I got a free keyboard…..jks.
