  • Will these give me audiophile cred?

    • Granted as you wish

    • Nope, not on its own, also need 24/192 dac, amp and stand.

      • I think the truly delusional audiofools have moved onto 32bit DAC because apparently 24bit not doing anything to make the sound better wasn't enough :p

      • you mean my 8 channel MOTU simultaneous I/O 24/96 with fully balanced preamps and output amps wont do?
(we record in 24/88.1 to avoid aliasing in mixdown)

  • Look nice if you want a reference headphone.

The Fidelio X2 from the previous deal a couple of days ago have dropped in price to a new low.

    • +2

Yep, for basslover: the Fidelio X2 is better (open back). The K702 (semi-open) is more neutral but the soundstage is a little bit wider (AKG style).

However, the K702 need an amp ! Bass lvl between AKG 7xx cans (same drivers but different sound signatures): Massdrop AKG K7xx > Quincy AKG Q701 > AKG K702
Only high end cans are made in Austria…the K701, K702, Q701, K7xx are "now" made in China.

      • need an amp !

TBH so does the Fidelio X2. People say you can use it without one but there's major compromises in sound quality IME, particuarly bass.

    • Still shows as £112 shipped for me.

  • Ugh just bought some sennheiser momentums last week

Must resist urge to buy more headphones!

    • +1

Noooo… just give in. Let the bass flow through you

    • Well these are totally different headphones and cannot be used in public without annoying people.

      • But it's ok to disturb people with apple's earpods ;) especially with the old ones.

      • Yea i understand that, I already have two for on the go and only 1 for home so this will even the odds :p

  • Ha, I'm using this as well

This is a hard headphone to drive with AMP.

Just go and get X2 if you don't have any Amps.

This is a hard headphone to drive with AMP.

      With or without?

Could you comment on how far the head band can extend? I have a largish head and some headphones don't fit me well.

      • The arch may look cheap because of the plastic but the main body is made of metal, like the fidelio X2.

        Dimensions with round up numbers:
from the center of the driver to the top of the headband: ~12cm
the headphones can be easily extended to ~20cm without measuring the earpads

In my opinion, $50 amps can't make you fall in love with these headphones because if there is not enough power, the sound will be loud but too flat, too boring.

Besides, some people prefer to keep the sound signature of the K702 by using the O2 amp but there are also people who want to add some warmth (little dot's amps, fiio E12, matrix m stage, etc.)

        • What headphones would an audiophile use for portables (e.g. Phone, Tablet, 3DS, Vita)? An amp is not really practical here.

You can assume a quiet environment, so open back is fine.

        • @lostn:
Well, it depends of your budget and what type of music you like to listen to. What is your favorite song on youtube ?
          On-ear or over-ear headphones ?

If you know a shop like minidisc where you can try different/famous head/earphones, it will be easier to find the right one.

        • @jutsu: Over-ear.

I don't listen to music. So it will be gaming and movies. It would double up for home use. Or is it too much to expect a one size fits all solution?

If you know a shop like minidisc where you can try different/famous head/earphones, it will be easier to find the right one.

If they don't give you a quiet environment, it's difficult to test audio equipment.

Budget is $500, but less is better.

The important thing is good sound stage and imaging, and no amp required. Won't be listening to music with it.

          @lostn:
The size of the headphones matters if the budget is below 100 or 200. It also exclude Grado's headphones.

You may already know about these headphones but I have 2 cans in mind. Well, it's far from 500 but I only know about headphones below $300-350.
          - Audio technica AD900X (more bass than the original AD900: sharp bass yet not overwhelming)
          - Philips Fidelio X2 (deep and boomy bass but because of that, the soundstage is not as good as the AD900X).

I think the AD900X is better for FPS games and Fidelio for games like final fantasy with nice soundtracks because the immersive experience.

        • Conclusion:
Philips Fidelio X2 because FPS is not as good on smartphones, PS vita and you will enjoy watching movies with the X2.
