Need Advice on Adelaide Trip and Kangaroo Island

Hi - I am planning to go to Adelaide and Kangaroo Island in Dec 2016 from Melbourne.
2 adults, 1 infant and 1 car (optional)

Need some info as to how to plan and how much time to spend on KI. What's there to see?
Is one day enough or a night stay can be done?

I will be staying in Adelaide for another 1 or 2 days and might drive from there to Cape Jervis.

Can we hire a car at KI itself instead of taking ours which seems to be costing around $98x2?

Appreciate the info.. anyone else having discount vouchers which they can spare?

Cheers,

Best way to get their would be Car via ferry, https://www.sealink.com.au/
But according to google, it is possible to hire car in KI http://lmgtfy.com/?q=car+hire+kangaroo+island

You better book your hotels early if possible, can get booked out.
IMO, its cheaper to go to tropical island in Asia (inc flights/Acc/), than going to KI :)

    • thanks..booked a hotel in adelaid cbd.. would be driving from melb
was thinking should I take my car to KI or hire there

      • If its your own car, would be more cheaper and convenient to take to KI with a ferry, if you staying there more than one day. :)

  • Some car rental companies would not allow their cars to be taken to Kangaroo Island for some reason. Recently I hired a car from East Coast Car rentals at Adelaide Airport and Kangaroo Island was in the list where the car wasn't allowed to be driven into (Kangaroo Island, Bruny Island, Fraser Island, Magnetic Island, Groote Eylandt, Gove Peninsula or the Tiwi Islands)

Therefore you better check with your preferred rental company before paying for the car first or as you have suggested find a rental car in KI

    • thats ok.. Tell adelaide and around is not a problem as I will have my car..
Only question was KI and was thinking or hiring once i get there. Might take my own car

  • If you wan to enjoy KL better to hire a car or take yours. I took my Yaris and did not have any problems apart than it got pretty dirty.

I stayed at Waves and Wildlife Cottages in Stokes Bay. Recommend at least 3 days if you want to go to all places and attractions. Stokes Bay is nice, very quiet and peaceful at night. Waves and Wildlife Cottages were fantastic, they are surrounded by kangaroos (wild) so they are not going to approach you. Loved the place. Cottages are nice too and the owner is a good bloke.

Never seen discount vouchers. Sealink is the only company that makes the trip to KI so they don't need to give discount vouchers.

    • ahh so you stayed at KI and recommeding 3 days there itself.. hmmm
I was thinking 1 day to KI which now seems to be very less..
What cwould i be able to do in one day ?

  • I traveled to KI in 2008 and the first thing I learned from Visitor Information Centre was that most Insurance would be void if you are driving during night and hit a animal. Check the terms and conditions of car rental.
Its a fairly big Island. Traveling from end to end was a couple of hrs. I was there for 3 days/ 3 nights but still did not manage to see all places. But for e it was more of a relaxed holiday. So I did not rush.

    • Very important point about driving from twilight onwards. I did not want to take any risks and made sure to be "home" before that. Just when you arrive you get to see all kangaroos roaming around the cottages. It was fantastic.

    • Thanks for the info…again looks like my 1 planned one day seems to be very less

Well if you travelled this week I'd recommend a flashlight and a generator…. :(
