Best Sim Card + Travel Money Card for Thailand

G'day folks, I'm travelling to Thailand in December and looking at staying for 10 days. I will be doing lot of Whatsapping & Snapchatting to family back home about my trip and I'm looking at doing it cheaply. Anyone recommend a good provider to do it with? Do i buy the sim card from here or over there. Also, any good pre-paid bank cards i can use over there? I don't want to use my current debit / credit to avoid fees etc..

looking for people's opinions on these matters and what they did from their experiences..

Much love
Alz

Thai ATMs charge ATM fees. Aussie cash gets good rates at money changers.

  • Piggy backing on this thread. I am doing the same in December. :)

  • Also going in a couple of months time. There's an awesome list here:
    http://prepaid-data-sim-card.wikia.com/wiki/Thailand

    • Do you know if there are any restrictions to getting a sim card for travellers? ie. what's the difference between getting a prepaid sim card vs getting a traveller sim card? Seems most of the listed telcos in Thailand has both prepaid and traveller sim options.

      • From a glance traveller SIMs just seem to be premixed options for travellers.

When I was in KL not so long ago, the booth wanted to sell me a pricier option than what I had seen on their website. Since I had time to kill in the early hours of the morning, we went back and forth until he relented and sold me the cheaper deal.

Don't be surprised if you front up at a booth and find they profess no knowledge of the cheaper deal you've seen online. Up to you whether you want to haggle.

        • I think it is different for different countries, eg. there are no restrictions on travellers having sim cards in Malaysia. Not sure why anyone would take up the traveller sim when stopping over in Malaysia. In Singapore, however, I wasn't able to get a prepaid sim because mobile phone sims are restricted to locals only. It did help that Singapore had free wifi almost everywhere though.

        • @geek001: That fact of Singapore doesn't surprise me. :)

  • Vodafone Sim Only.. use your calls (unlimited in Thailand and to and from oz) sms, data $5 a day
And as for currency.. CASH all the way.. exchange locally.

Take cash. Although for larger trips may need to look at supplementing with other methods.
Buy a Sim card at the airport. Booths are easy to find. Quick process. I recommend DTAC and Truemove - have had no issues with either. Make sure your phone is not network locked.

  • Grab a SIM at the airport, they're 300baht (about $12). Cheaper than the $50 you'd be charged by Vodaphone. Provider isn't too important, I've used them all and they've all been fine.

Money, ATMs charge 200baht for every transaction, so either use a Citibank card and take out a heap in one go, or take AUD and change it over there where you'll get good rates.

  • Get the True H sim, you'll be able to get it in Thailands airport for free - ask them to sign you up to any of these 4G Packages http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/topping/4g_topping_en.html

Get a Citibank plus acc with card to avoid currency fees. Just bring cash as you're not staying too long
