  • What is the right way to calculate payback period? Is this calculator showing correct figures? https://www.solarmarket.com.au/solar-savings-calculator/

    • A crude guestoment.

Depending what feedin tarrif you get (i.e. how much they pay you for your power to export). I think most states pay under 8c/kwh which means bugger-all and your best getting a small system if you use some power during the day. That is don't rely on making any money selling power back. 5kwh might be handy for those who use aircond during the day to basically self power (& help with brown outs)

In Vic you're getting 5c/kWh. The FIT is negligible. You should only consider how much less electricity you'll be consuming. If you get home in the evening like most people, it's probably not a huge reduction. The picture could change drastically if you had battery storage.

        • I'd wait in regards to battery power.

The Tesla Powerwall has had a huge marketing machine pumping it along, but its a damn ripoff here in Australia.
There is no reason its payback is over 20 years other than greed (remembering that the warranty is 10 years).

Peak load shift (using battery power for that 5p-11p bracket) is a great idea and in the near future will definitely be worth the trouble. But look at solar panels. Have dropped in price a huge amount over the last decade, and continue to do so.

Batter tech is getting better every year, but I reckon give batteries another 5 years before investing. At least wait until payback and warranty favours you!

Solar panel prices are still falling, so there is the arguement to wait for them to fall as well… but the difference is their warranties are 20 years or so, with payback in potentially 5-7 years. Less if you can switch some of your bulk usage to day time and minimise night night use. Definitely worth it now.

Yeah, so in a nutshell… put that extra cash you have for a battery, into additional solar panels instead.

          @UFO:
Very true, although the caution is there looks like there will be a glut of PV panels this year/next year that will likely mark the lowest ever point for cost per Watt. So in 5 years there may be fewer manufacturers able to exert some pricing power resulting in higher prices. There really isn't any new 'killer' technology arriving to drive PV prices lower, it has been all about bringing the massive Chinese production machine to crank out huge volumes efficiently.
This has likely reached a plateau.

As for batteries, the mass production process for high capacity cells is still in its infancy (see e.g. Tesla's Gigafactory) so there is substantial scope for battery prices to fall further.

If I was in the market, I too, would install panels now, with a view to adding battery storage in a few years.

@UFO: Yes I agree. At current prices batteries aren't worth it. Once they fall significantly in price they will be a game changer for the individual and the grid.

  • What's the deal?

  • SPAM.

  • following the link, site says "Melbourne Metro area" yet heading says NSW/VIC…

  • anything with battery storage?

Canadian Solar a bit like an African Skiing company?

  • I have never known that Canadian is making any solar panels at all or they are good at making those solar panels. I only know that China and German are those two main solar panel manufactures.

    • +1

Canadian solar is a Chinese made panel.

      • What's the chances of that, ay?

  • In QLD, I went through Apollo Solar when they were offering 5kw for $3850. I think they charge a bit more now but I doubt the system advertised here would be much different. Where's the deal? :)

    • New amazing promo

Marketing speal for the non "professionals".

  • Compared to true value solar 5KW system with Bosch inverter at $3750????

These are not premium branded products, and the price is mediocre. Not much of a deal.

  • Rep, do you have terms and conditions or details of this offer?
