Why no Hobart? Must be overseas.

  • Thanks for the post TA. Been waiting for a Virgin international sale as want to go to LAX July next year. Unfortunately last 10% off code did not seem to work for me. I guess I'll just wait in hope?

    • When I was booking a Air NZ flight outbound on NYE the call centre informed me the code is only valid up until 31/12, and since my inbound flight was after that it wouldn't apply. I got lucky though, the online booking glitched and let me process it.

  • alot of flights are not direct..

    Full service?
What does that make QANTAS… fuller service?

Have been disappointed recently when flying Virgin. If giving passengers a $2 muffin or biscuit substantiates the $50 difference between Jetstar flights and constitutes an ability to class yourself as "full service", then I question whether or not we need another term to delineate between full service airlines.

Check in baggage is also included. Qantas doesn't really provide much more substantial meals on most short domestic flights either it seems.

I do a fair bit of flying between the eastern capitals and would normally fly Virgin on account of company policy to choose the cheaper option between Virgin and Qantas. Recently, I've done 3 legs on Virgin and 3 on QANTAS and have to say that Virgin seems to have dropped their standards…

I tend to prefer Qantas seating on the planes though, not quite sure why.

I completely disagree with you, every time I've flown with Virgin, the service has been amazing and was provided with a full meal alongside multiple snacks.

      • Which means you either flew internationally or to Perth… The devil is in the details mate.

Virginia is not truly full service

      • where are you flying from and to?

I travel mostly between syd, melb, bris and adl and all i have been given is either muffin, banana bread or Cadbury cookie but never got given a full meal. Never flown with Qantas domestically though so I cant judge. For some reason my company like to fly me with Virgin even though sometime i request to fly with Jetstar or Tiger never mind Qantas.

Virgin doesn't even give complementary soft drink. How is it called a full service airline, apart from the checked baggage and the snacks

      • +1

What you get depends on the route..

        • +1

No complimentary soft drinks for any domestic flights, apart from flights between 5-7 pm according to the Virgin Australia website.

        • +1

You actually get complimentary tea/coffee and water on all flights. The 5-7pm thing is just for fancy stuff like beer, wine, cider and soft drink.

        • +1

          That's what she said…

        • +5

Juice or coke are hardly what I'd call 'fancy'.

        • @Ryballs: Yeah exactly lol. But how is soft drinks fancy?

        • +3

As long as they don't let me die from dehydration I'm happy.

        • +2

People still drink soft drinks in 2016, really?

  • Ooh, this covers the Melbourne GP week in March. SYD-MEL $95 each way is juicy… except dates at that price can't be changed, and the GP calendar isn't 100% locked in yet. Argh!

    • The f1 dates are locked in for 2017. Only 2 dates are up in the air.

      • The provisional calendar is released, and in all likelihood it's final. But it's not formally ratified by the FIA until December. Until then it's a little risky to book anything that can't be changed later. The Aus GP's own mailout this week still has an asterisk against the 26th.

Virgin is not a full service airline, not when you have to select between their different bundles to add checked luggage, meals and entertainment.

Qantas and Emirates are examples of full service airlines.

    • That is only on Trans-Tasman flights as part of the Air NZ alliance.

      • My mistake if that's the case, been looking at flights to Auckland.

What light meals, one small cookie and a small cup of juice/water/coffee. I don't call that a light meal, it is not even large enough to be called a snack.

    • +1

I'm with you on that. We recently flew Tiger up to Brisbane and then Virgin on the way back. I couldn't believe that Tiger had a much better menu choice than Virgin in every option.

Whilst Virgin gave me a tea and twin pack of some sort of lemon biscuit in the ticket price the choice of things to purchase was very poor.

  • Add the discount code BKW29 for another 10% off for travel up to August 2017.

    • Doesn't work for any of my Sydney to Perth dates….

just a note to people here, im a regular virgin flyer due to work (silver) and the so called "meals" are mostly $1 cookies, biscuits, mini chocolate bar, muffin, etc. The proper "meal' is only served on longer flights like Melbourne to Perth for example, even then it's a very small portion meal not fullfilling at all. So think about that before paying $50 or more extra for a "full service" flight.
