Teen Seeking Manual Sporty Car

Hey I'm on my L's and I require a manual car as I want to get my p's on manual.

Could you guys suggest some cars that meet the following criteria:

•under 10k
•Sporty/modern
•P plate legal
•low kms
•preferably 5 seater as I don't want a car like the mx-5
•Looks good for a high school guy and overall doesn't look like a shitbox
•Doesn't have a bad interior

Thank you

EDIT:
Thank you all for the suggestions , I can't make up my mind and will for other people's opinions . Can I ask one more thing ?

  • I want to mod a cheap car (under 7.5k) , by modding I mean body kit , rims and wing and interior console. Are there any cheap cars that will be suited to this?

Are cars over 15 years modern?

  • +7

    Lancer/Impreza/Liberty

Any of those cars will keep you out of trouble, but still be decent in a manual.

    • Specifically what model?

      • +13

The lowest-mileage and best condition your money can buy.

Have a scroll through the Automotive forum, there was a kid looking at those Subarus, however he was picking out the shit-heap ones!

No one should care what you drive, especially if you're the only one among your friends with a car! Pick the one in best condition and lowest mileage that you can. Rims/Body kits etc etc can come later, if need be.

        • Thanks

        • +1

To add to this, the mileage actually doesn't matter.
The amount of years can also not matter.

What matters is the quality build of the car, its maintenance, and the condition you buy it at.
I bought a lemon at 120,000 km's and also bought a nice beater at 320,000 km's… and the latter was better.

I think you should look to mechanics, and see what they drive… crappy indestructible junk cars!

        • +1

lol you still paying out that guy? :D

        • +2

          @serpserpserp:

Nope, but was a factual statement 😂

      • +34

        Cruze?

        No!

        • I actually am looking at cruzes , what's wrong with them?

        • +8

          @Dean00:

Long-term reliability, especially the older ones

        • -1

@Dean00: your criteria nothing wrong with cruze.

        • @Spackbace: when you say older ones , what year cause I looked at 2010 onwarsa

        • @Dean00:

Anything within your price range basically. Just don't go Cruze unless it's within warranty

        • +3

Haha I hope they aren't too bad. I just bought one this afternoon :/

They seemed to rate pretty well in choice magazine.

          Mine is a CD JH Series II Manual MY12 - Manual - 1.4L Turbo - 66,000km.

I paid $8500. Seemed like the best option compared to everything else I looked at in the same price range.

Should I just cut my losses and set it on fire?

        • @sipitai:

Not too bad in the 1.4, and 2012 model is locally tuned. It's the 1.8 that's pretty crappy!

        • Phew. wipes sweat from brow

        • +5

@Dean00: absolute rubbish cars! Their is a reason they are so cheap!

        • +3

@Dean00: Thought you said you wanted a sporty car…

        • +2

@Serapis: Its got a turbo bro.

        • -6

@Serapis: it is modern and looks decent and sporty after putting a wing and rims on it

        • -1

          @JIMB0: Yeah but FWD…

        • @Dean00: The Cruze is a car that is built to a price and it shows. The build quality is not far off from a Hyundai Getz.

I've been in some and there are just little things that should be for a car its age..like vibrations from the engine, which in turn rattle trim pieces. Not impressed

        • +1

          @Serapis:

So much this! Accurately summed up my reaction.

        • @Dean00:

Well firstly they aren't "sporty" nor can you do much in the way of modding.

        • It's a Daewoo on the inside.

        • My Cruze has cost me thousands and has just died at 150.000km. Stay the hell away from it. Or set fire to your money, same result.

        • @Dean00: Holden's in general are horrible. I saw a report that had them in the top 5 most unreliable cars in Australia. Skip the cruise. I've had 2 friends sucked in and they've had no end to problems.

          Look at Honda or Mazda.

      • +2

        lol at a Cruze.

        • +2

I saw most of the cruzes are 2010 at 7,500- 10k with less than 100k

        • +1

          @Dean00: eveen consider a corolla.

        • +17

          @dlf73:

          DO NOT look at Cruze's

          you WILL regret it

          they define shitbox

        • @oscargamer: sounds like you know some stuff I don't which maybe useful to OP. Care to share? 😀

        • +1

@dlf73: please tell me why I will regret it?

        • @Dean00: I never said that! I too am asking for why people believe they are no good!

        • +2

@Dean00: Some moron has to buy them. Go ahead.

        • +1

@Dean00: Ask yourself this; if the car was good, why would people sell them cheap with relatively low kays?

        • @dlf73:
That would be the smartest choice for the need and $'s.
Wont have the "cool kid" factor at maccas though.

        • @xywolap: you mean corolla? I suggested that as have used two base model and Sport and i think they are pretty good. Highway driving shit on Hyundai with fuel mileage and around d town have more zip than them too. Plus they are bigger inside and boot.

      • -5

        cruze

is a good choice for ls and ps. very safe.
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Cruze#Safety

    • +2

This guy is downvoted, but actually speaks the most truth here. You really can't find a good looking car under 10k, and all OP criteria.

      • You can, as long as you forgo the five doors. Lots of nice looking coupes

  • Best you carsales this one and put in your price range.

Mazda 3 and swift also come in mind

  • +2

I am surprised you don't specify good fold back seats or a magnet?

    • Hhahah

      • Glad you liked that. It happens…..
Also don't forget when we you have a few suggestions that youbare happy with, go to carsales.com.au(not sure if others do it too) and create an account and setup email notifications based on particular options that may also help you get a good deal!

  • +5

    camry

    • .. see above re corolla, same same..

  • +1

Think about avoiding anything with big wheels and a silly wing or body kit. May attract unwanted attention from the boys in blue when you stick a p plate on it.

I reckon a Mazda 3 would look ok, and civics tend to be popular starting point for people keen on cars. Impreza has WRX lineage too.

  • +1

    Toyota Yaris

    • 13 5dr model looks quite sporty

      • +42

        How to contradict yourself 101.

      • +1

man you're going to have a bad time generalising asians on this website

        • People can be so sensitive just like chill

  • +17

In my opinion cl9 aka honda accord euro. For 10k p plate legal car you're not going to get anything sporty and 5drs.

    • +4

I second Euro as well, it's pretty awesome and the interior is well designed especially if you get the luxury model.

    • +3

Ive personally got a manual cl9 accord euro as my first car on p's and I would definitely recommend it. The k24 makes 140kw which is not bad compared to many other p plater cars and I rate the looks as well

    • +1

Good suggestion. Manual is in the 7 seconds.

    • +2

      +1 for Euro. I have the '04 CL9 Luxury. 6 speed manual and a sunroof :D
I also fitted a GROM audio kit and now have USB, iPod and bluetooth control from steering wheel.
Recommend the '05/06 update with body kit though, looks awesome.

      • +1

I have the 06, highly recommended.

    • Spot on..a while ago I bought brand new Jap made 2006 accord euro and it was amazing…. manual is fantastic and fast while auto is slow and thirsty… sold it within 2 years as I couldn't hack driving 6 speed manual daily 80km to work and back in Sydney traffic…. replaced it with Thai made wide body 2008 Accord (non euro) which was rubbish in comparison.

  • +1

Moog on mighty car mods recently bought himself a 180sx.. Something like that will suit most young guys

    • Taytay! Its hard to find a clean 180sx/Silvia/Skyline etc these for cheap these days because they've all been trashed, I'm trying to look for one myself.

      • +7

I had a pristine skyline for 10 years.. Sold it a few years back and recently saw it again.. It was depressing.

      • It was hard to find one 10yrs ago.

        Good luck

    • +1

OP probably wants to actually use the car to drive places though.

  • +2

N/A Aristo… 2jz and you can lower and big wheel it.

    • +13

      2jz? No shit!

      • He hasnt got 15 grand to do it up though

        • +3

But… But… We can get overnight parts from Japan!

        • @Spackbace: just put on some nishimoto ZX tires, and a motec system exhaust and youre good to go

  • +4

Buy a corolla sportivo. 2003-05 are a 6 speed manual and tick the rest of your boxes.

    They're good fun to drive.

    • I actually think they are fun to drive but they feel like a family car to me. I would have felt like a goose driving around in one as a teenager.

  • +3

    VY/VZ commodore
VY's still have the older ECOTEC engine, the VZ's have the upgraded alloytec 3.6l v6. Both cars have the same style body, easy to maintain (ecotec's much easier), heaps available in manual and won't cost you a fortune.

  • I would suggest an older VW Golf GTD or GTI, don't know what the rules are in relation to L n P plates with turbo cars though…

    • There's exceptions to the "turbo rule" because turbo tuning isn't just for more power, it makes the car more efficient, so its common to see it for economical purposes.

In the case of the "turbo rule", the next rule kicks in and that's the "power to weight ratio".
It must be 130kW/1,000 Kg. (or 174hp/tonne for you Yanks).
Obviously a heavier car can have more power, eg:
1,400 kg… upto 182kW/244hp… not much to work with, but not too sluggish.

You could then rip out the passengers, spare tyre, back seats, the stereo, the air con, reduce the fuel capacity, and anything that weighs something.
And improve your power to WEIGHT ratio.
Not like a cop is going to give you a ticket for being 150Kg below your expected 1400Kg.

Or if you could… just get an Electric car.
They are drastically coming down in weight, improving ride stability, and energy response.
Even better is that power delivery is immediate.
And that power ratings like "hp" are quite iffy to read off them.

      • OP wants a car, not a dragster.

        • Agreed… 170-250hp is plenty for all/most people.

Another way at looking at this is if you get pulled over in a Mustang… you can get away from a ticket if you just have lots of heavy items in the car ; )

          (obvious sarcasm for the latter)

        • @Kangal: lol…thanks for that awesome explanation K!

  • +1

I don't think it matters now days what you buy. You are limited in output by government regulations. When I first started driving every one had old turbo cars and v8s. Get some thing like a daihatsu sirion gtvi if you can find one. It will be older then you want but cheaper and easy and cheap to fix. Super sporty! If people make jokes about the car you can chop them around corners.

    http://www.drive.com.au/new-car-reviews/sirion-gtvi-gets-a-f…

    • Yep. Too many kids killing themselves in sooped up cars so they changed the rules. First car I had was a turbo. Oh the memories!

      • Any modern day hatch back will easily do 200km/h+ and easily wrap around a tree.

What is your logic behind "sooped up cars" and kids killing themselves?

        • What other scenarios are there that you can think of?

        • @supnigs:

immature drivers crash and kill themselves/others, not "high powered" cars

        • @storyteller: inexperience combined with high powered cars is way more dangerous. That is why P platers are restricted to what they can drive.

  • +3

Would go with an older gen mx5

      • +10

you can really tell when its school holidays around here….

      • +3

Not once you mod it up. With the hard top, it's decent track car with good handling + it's got a great enthusiast community + a lot of available aftermarket parts.

      • +4

MX-5 is a proper sports car; the people who deride it like you have are usually the kinds of people who like to project their own repressed sexual tendencies on others.

      • +1

Mate, the mx5 is a great car with exceptional handling. They can make a great track car.
