Cheapest Way to Shave Dog for Upcoming Summer?

Last summer we cut our dog by hand with a pair of scissors and an electronic trimmer made for humans but the blade is now completely blunt cause of continued usage (this dog has thick long hair). Unfortunately I don't believe it is one of those where u can just replace the blade(?). it's some cheap chinese brand

What's a good long-term solution for dog shaves that is easy on the wallet?

(PS: there is a place around here that does it for you for $110+, and dog will need another cut by February so not super economical)

Buy an Andis AGC v2 or something from here. Oil the blades before and after use, will last you forever.

  • I use a Wahl LiIon groomer (designed for use on people).

$120 or so in a kit several years ago and it works great on the soft fur of a mini schnauzer. That Andis one certainly looks better, I suspect our Wahl would have trouble with longer furs.

Alos requires oiling and probably a new LiIon battery every 3 years.

buy a $20 trimmer from Kmart and just replace every time it needs to be.

Our dog costs around $50 at the groomers, no way would I ever pay $110.
Have you tried the local animal welfare group, they might do them cheaper. Petbarn stores also do grooming and arent as expensive as you mention.

Depending on the dog, this is a very bad idea. Some of those $20 Kmart trimmers have shitty blades and motor. They tear through the fur than actually cut it. Think about your barber pulling your hair instead of cutting it next time you go for a cut.

    • guessing it's a big dog

  • What breed of dog is it? Some long hair breeds should NOT be shaved.

    • he's a shetland sheepdog

Whatever you do, don't buy people clippers thinking you can save some cash. Dogs have different hair.

I've had Oster clippers for a good 20 years and I've bought new blades once. I also use them on my own head. Like a hot knife through butter. Would never waste money on people clippers.

    Have 3 dogs. Cut them 3 times a year. Sep/Oct, Nov/Dec, Feb/March.
