Xbox or PS preference if you have both?

Hi Crew,

I'm just interested in what people do with a decision on gaming.

A lot of folks own a PlayStation and a Xbox. I'm guessing cause they want both worlds and the exclusives respectively. My question is when a game comes out on both consoles what is your preference to buy for. Do you buy the PS version or the Xbox version? Does it come down to graphics, or maybe the controller etc. Does it depend on hard drive space, paid membership, online, physical or digital media etc.

I own both and just brought Mafia3 on Xbox. Not really sure why, I guess it's the controller for me and the dashboard etc.

Thought it might be interesting to get the feel of the room?

Please excuse me if this has been raised before.

If it's a multiplayer game, I pick the one I have friends on, which is usually PS this time round. If everything else is equal, e.g. content, DLC, price, etc. (I like both controllers, so it's a split), then I'll take a look at Digital Foundry for which version looks or performs better, which again, is usually the PS4.

The worst part about the PS4 is that it is not Steam, and so you have to pay for PS+ subscription for online multiplayer

Copy paste from what you linked

this should not of been typed as a worst part of the ps4 as xbox live is no different whatsoever to psplus.
and i have no bloody idea why you mentioned steam at all as steam is PC and is on neither console.

Yes i negged Cause the above reason.

      • -1

Not sure why you negged, when it also reads "XBLive Gold membership is expensive".
So your claims that I was biased towards the Xbox One is unfounded.
Also online multiplayer monetisation is nothing new for the Xbox ecosystem, just to point that out.

The reason why I said Steam at the time was because:
1 - Steam is a gaming ecosystem (I believe they're the 3rd largest active, after mobile Google Play/iOS, and in front of PSN/XBL/Nin Net)
2 - Multiplayer is free on Steam, as long as you have an internet connection
3 - The PS3 is free online, and if I said the "PlayStation Network" instead it would've led to some confusion

However, I also added that the PS3 "online multiplayer is free" so as to discern the PS3 to the PS4.
This change in monetisation is quite new for SONY so it must be said to resolve any confusion.

(also not sure why anyone else negged, I only linked to my previous comment, I could've cut/pasted it here and waste Internet space)

My bad i went through it twice and still didn't see any part about xbox live before.

Steam mention solely on the ps4 part wasnt needed as it was about console only and makes ps4 look slightly worse despite no difference between live and psplus.

I wasn't the first one to neg so i think it's another of those neg for the fun of it things.

Edit: ive tried to revoke my neg but its not working ive reported your first comment to get mods to remove it for me.

  • multiple factors. Firstly if multi player then whichever console the friends I plan to play with are on. Secondly if one version is SIGNIFICANTLY better then the other. Finally if all else is equal I will usually favour the Xbox as I have more games there that I play regularly so simpler to switch games and I like the controller a little better.

  • Xbox One
Much superior gaming platform vs PSN

Cheaper too, seems to work and it hasn't been hacked

Steam for PC, works, keeps my games safe and in my own library, steamlink is A+

That is a great joke man.

        its the truth
xbox live is one of the best platforms out there, sorry if you sony fanboys are butthurt

        • +1

Implying I'm a sony fanboy when I own both consoles. Hahahahhaah

1 PS+ offers better monthly game value than xbox gold.

2 Xbox really has only one good console exclusive now. That's GOW4.

3 PS has more exclusives and now has a lot of early release priority.

4 PS4 Pro comes out next month, project scorpio doesn't come out till next year.

But hey, what would I know. I'm just a "butthurt sony fanboy"

I have both consoles and Live/Plus subs, both networks have their issues. Go check out Reddit or WP for people with download speed issues on both of them. XBL has been terrible since Gears launched due to the stress it's under from downloads and people playing. It's a myth that XBL is the better network, they're pretty much on par but if it helps you sleep.

        • @Voltz: 2 Xbox really has only one good console exclusive now. That's GOW4.

EXCUSE YOU. GoW 4 is on PC. So it hardly counts as console exclusive.

        • @Voltz:

1 - If you say so. If you only mean value as in $ attached to the games they give out then maybe. But not quality of the games IMO. The only game I think I've played this year from my PS+ has been Transformers Devastation. That being said I've only played 4 or so games I received through XBL this year.

2 - The only good console exclusive over both consoles IMO is Last of Us.

4 - I doubt the console manufacturers are going to segment their market by allowing a game to be on PS Pro or XB Scorpio only. At best you're going to get upscaled UHD content. UHD in most cases is meh. The human eyes only have a certain resultion and UHD really just means you can sit closer to the screen (or buy a bigger screen). For me to receive any benefit from UHD, I sit about 3m from the TV which means at a minimum I need to buy a 90" TV. In most cases, people are getting all excited by UHD games and consoles when they wont get a real benefit. Sort of like the people to claim they can see a huge difference in the graphics between a PS4 and XB1.

@FrankMcFuzz: whoopsy… haha I forgot their exclusive isnt exclusive any more :P

I've gravitated towards the Xbox mainly cause PS4 got highjacked by housemates. PS4 subscription has lapsed and doubtful I'll renew it. With Scorpio on the horizon I'm gonna stick with Xbox.

I never buy games new ( except for Tomb Raider 2 on launch), wait till they are on sale but when a cross platform game goes on sale, PS4 version always sells out first.

Prefer Xbox controller. Microsoft just tries harder in general imho.

I started a thread similar to this a while back if you're interested.

I have bought and resold(for a loss) multiple ps4's and xbox ones over the last 3 years..
I couldn't disagree with you more.

1 Lol @ "ps4 version sells out first" considering you can buy digital versions.

2 Scorpio is coming out next year ps4 pro is out next month

So your only real point is a preference…
Also who chooses a console based on what their housemates didnt buy?

      • Yup, when there is a sale on physical discs for a cross platform title and the ps4 ones sell out, I just go and spend more than the game cost on launch in a bricks and mortar store in the online store.

Why are you buying multiple ps4 and Xbox one's and then selling them at a loss?

Glad I made you laugh though.

      • -1

You do realize the PS4 and Xbox One are basically the same identical insides with a few tweaks on the GPU
the PS4 Pro is a heap of garbage compared to what Scorpio is going to bring to the table

Enjoy paying exhorbant pricing for your online experience, also enjoy your details getting leaked at least twice a year, and also enjoy that butthurt feeling you get knowing you're being ripped off to play online when Xbox offers a superior online experience

        FULL STOP

"the PS4 Pro is a heap of garbage compared to what Scorpio is going to bring to the table"
          HAHAHHAHAHAHA

You really are a special one.

Gotta love when people don't understand that the only differences are pointless boosts. Not only that but I'm pretty sure the ps4 pro is the equivalent to the xbox one S which it absolutely destroys.

Xbox has to release 3 types of xbox one to keep up. Its laughable.

I also like how you think that xbox databases don't get breached. Even though there are people who make a living by selling hacked xbox accounts.

        • +1

          The same?

          FULL STOP?

Jesus, dude you're trolling here I hope? If not I fear for your well-being.

        • +1

Yeah, even though I'm in the Xbox camp, that's BS. You just need to watch any random DigitalFoundry comparison vid to see that PS4 pretty much always performs better than Xbox. Even when they are like for like on frame rate, Xbox has normally had its resolution scaled down by 20% or so to 900p.

        • @jonathonsunshine: I honestly can't tell the difference.

        • @SirFlibbled: yeah, there's not much in it in terms of end result but to claim the hardwares identical except for "a few tweaks" is a real stretch.

  • +1

I don't have both, only a PC but if i bought a console it would be PS4.

    • Especially these days; as most xbox one games are now releasing on PC! Could get Gears if I wanted to…. $100 bucks digital is a bit too much though ;P

      • It's cheaper on Cdkeys isn't it? $70 or so I think, it's absolutely worth it.

  • I'm a both console owner. Prefer my Xbox because of the controller mainly. The difference in graphics performance between XB1 and PS4 is negligible in my eyes (yes I know some people see a huge different but I struggle with it).

Beyond that, it depends which console my friends are playing on (I had a lot of friends playing Battlefront on PS4 but a bunch of different friends playing Overwatch on XB1 for example).

I also prefer to interface for the XB1 over PS4 and the ability to watch TV etc through it. But PS4 has a better media player.

    • Why do you rate PS4 media player? I haven't used it in a year but last time I did was fairly lacking. And I know it still doesn't do 10bitHEVC.

      • Because the Xbox media player extremely basic. Yeah it can play a few more file types, there's a heap of features it can't do. Can't skip in x minute blocks. Doesn't resume from where you stopped. Automatically plays the next video in the folder (seriously how hard is it to provide an option to not auto-play???). It's like they came up with a great system for media and then ran out of budget for the media player.

        • Forgot too mention, Xbox doesn't have Cinavia.

    • -1

There is no difference in the hardware, don't let the fanboys get too excited over it

Xbox One and PS4 are basically the same CPU, slight tweaks in the GPU department but overall very similar

  • I like the Xbone exclusives I've played on my Gears console so far (got the Gears remaster and Gears 4, Halo MCC and 5, Forza 6 and Horizon 3) and I even bought the Elite controller which I think is great but I dislike the console UI immensly, it's cluttered like W10, very laggy and the store is a mess. I hate how the console tries to download games I am using a disc to install and I find Kinect voice controls are total jank.
I prefer the PS4 overall but like I said those games are great.

  • Ok, here's another thought, say I sold my PS4 for its assumed EB value of $210 (which I'm still not convinced is too far from the truth), how much do you think PS4 Pro price will drop by, by say, January?

    • Possibly a free game thrown in I reckon

  • I would pick PS, for I am really not quite into Xbox controllers. Too many unecessary buttons on them, I think.

    • Don't they have the exact same number of buttons and triggers?

      • Yeah I think so, unless you're looking at the Elite controller. In fact I think the DS4 has more if you include the touchpad.

        • And dont forget the silly disco light…
