How Do I Sell My Shares?

I've received a couple grand of shares through work and i was wondering how i sell them? Is there a way i can add them to my NAB trade account and sell them myself? Or do i have to go through a broker - if so any recommendations?

Do i need anymore information apart from the SRN and personal details to sell them?

thanks

  • I was looking into transferring some of my shares to IG, they allow you to add issuer sponsored shares to your portfolio (with SRN and valid ID). I assume all brokers can provide that service

Before you sell your shares, if they're employer provided shares, there may be restrictions on selling them for a certain period of time - check that first. If your shares have no restrictions, normally the transfer to your NAB trade or most online brokers can be completed by logging into your account and filling in details on line to transfer. Otherwise, you may have to download a form and complete it and post it. If you have to download a form for NAB trade, you can always drop the form off at a NAB branch. This works so long as all your details on both your NAB trade and the shares provided by work are exactly the same (e.g. names must be exactly the same - no middle name in one and none in the other, postal address the same etc etc). Transfer times depend whether you're going from issuer sponsored to broker sponsored, or broker to issuer, or broker to broker.

  • "can add them to my NAB trade account"
yeah call your NAB trade help line and tell them you want to transfer xxx stock from SRN to your HIN.
that is the key. from SRN to HIN.
and once done you will see that xxx shares on your portfolio when you login into your nab trading acccount. from there, just sell whenever you like.

    • Thanks i'll give it a shot now.

your NAB trade account IS indeed a broker.
everyone in australia need broker to sell. you might think when you join commsec/etrade/nab, you dont trade through broker? wrong. they are broker. online brokers.

  • Are they international shares? If so, transferring them to your Australian portfolio first to then sell them can cost you fees etc and sometimes it's not worth it and better off just selling them overseas.

If they are on the ASX already then should be no problem as long as they are unrestricted.
