Google has finally released their phones for this year replacing the Nexus line, Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL.

List of specs http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8345&idPhone2=…

Nothing super special, but it's great that the Pixel XL has a 3450mah battery, usb type C, snapdragon 821, and apparently a great camera; but we'll have to wait for reviews to see if it's that good. Storage options are 32GB or 128GB

Free unlimited cloud storage for photos and videos (including 4k videos) for Pixel owners
Automatic Updates - definitely not a fan, especially since it installs in the background

https://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Pixel-smartphone-camera-revi…

Received top marks from DXOMark for it's camera.

Pixel (32GB) is $1079
Pixel (128GB) is $1229

Pixel XL (32GB) is $1269
Pixel XL (128GB) is $1419

Just saw on Facebook that Telstra have it exclusively. Pixel 32GB with 10GB data is $99/m.

Just added the same poll as on androidpolice.

Love HTC, had the M7 and M8. M8 best phone I've ever had for that era.

      • Yep the m7 was awesome.

  • Phone sounds impressive, and I'd be happy to buy, but not at that price.

Any thoughts (guesses) on how long it would take for price to come down?

    • +2

actually compared to the nexus 6p. it only has a single speaker so it will only have mono sound. So not sure that it will sound impressive.

  • +5

and why XL is only 5.5"? come on… if you make 2 version make it significant like 5" and 6.4".

    • +1

5.7" is about the limit for my (regular) jean pockets.
I think it's also the limit as to how far other (purse-less) people would go.

I do agree, a bigger difference would've been nice.
Maybe like a 5.7" and a 4.7" version, especially if the phone's size/bezels are short.

But these devices don't have small bezels… nor do they have front-firing stereo speakers.

So why would anyone choose a Google Pixel over a Nexus 5X ??
I'd choose the 5X, despite its bad QSD 808 chip and smaller battery.
Or the Google Pixel XL over a Nexus 6P ??
Again, only improvements seem to be the SoC.

I fail to see why anyone would buy a Pixel when you can get a SGS7 (and variants), which add Waterproofing.
Or an iPhone, which is what this seems to be aiming for.
Or better yet, the previous awesome Nexus devices.

I feel bad SONY gets overlooked by Google, in favour of HTC, who have made multiple collabs with El Goog.

next year apple will have the courage to remove the speakers, in 2 years time apple will have the courage to sell you just apple logo in the box.

        • +3

In a few years apple will remove the screen, the box and the phone and just sell you the lighting EarPods…

        • +1

@TheClipIt: Here was my prediction, lol I wouldn't be surprised either :P

        • +1

@stuhtb: Nah, they won't remove the camera. In the iPhone 10 they'll be 20 cameras but no phone…..

        • +3
  • +3

Gee this is a bit of a fizzer… looks like an iPhone and is overpriced (just like an iPhone). Have to hold my hopes on the LG V20 then

    • +1

Looks like a 3 year old iPhone 6 with a better camera, faster charging and 4x the price!

    • +1

designed to collect as much data as possible by and send it off to an advertising company?

Links to proof? or you just made up the story

      • +1

        Quick search reveals some articles

        • There was only one sentence in there pertaining to Google itself, and it was an edge case. Everything else was about 3rd party apps, not the OS or Google, so hardly relevant.

    • Ha ha, maybe they designed their phone and structured their price based on the spied data.

    • +2

Copied the iphone in what way?

Android phones tend to be ahead of iphones in almost every single way.

    • You're free to use any other browsers than Chrome, and other search engines than Google.
Turn off Google Now, use Here Maps instead of Google Maps.

Or use a dummy Google account.

Do you have actual sources that cite Google intercepts all communication to and from Android phones?

  • +2

Nothing really special on this phone, and definitely not worth the price. They are basically charging you more for something they could have easily fixed on the Nexus devices last year. Would still go for the 6P over this

    • +2

Welcome back! What was up with you disabling your account?

      • +2

Haha thanks, had some issues with the account, all sorted now :)

  • +9

So its basically Google cracked open the Nexus 6P casing. Grabbed all the components from there. Transferred the components to a crappy iPhone ripoff case and slapped a piece of glass on the back. And start charging a fortune for it.

    Boom.

The new Pixel Phone says in the box:

Designed by Apple in California, Made by Google in China

  • +3

Wow, when I saw the specs I was pleased - but they aren't much different from a higher end Xiaomi phone.

Then I saw the $1400+ price! WTF!!!

People should just buy a Xiamoi at a third of the price - they may be Chinese but their reputation for hardware is far better than Google's.

    • Yeah I was sceptic regarding Xiaomi, but they've proved me wrong. Great phone specs at a cheap price.

Camera is a bit of a downer though

  • +2

Reading the comments, I am happy that nobody wants to buy at this outrageous price. Faith in humanity is not lost yet. I like the phone but will only but at $500 max

    • -4

      500? lololololol

      • -1

what is so funny? google fanboy much?

        • That you expect to pay max 500 for a newly announced mobile.

There is nothing wrong with liking one Operating system over another.

        • +3

          @Axelstrife:
I see you were not around for the n4 and n5 releases, now that is how you build customer goodwill

        • @TehGamer: i was whats your point? You cant expect a phone like to with this build quility and camera to be 500.

Ive already agree that these prices are too much but i dont agree that they should be $500.

        • @Axelstrife:

lmfao. One Plus 3 with better build and 6 GB RAM and superior other specs is circa $500. There are definitely more similar phones in this price range

        • +1

@alizain1156: wow True totaly forgot about the oneplus i guess google think cause it's a big name in the world it can charge these kind of prices.

      • Nexus 5 32GB came out for less than $500.
The fact it now costs more than double that for a 'Nexus' is no laughing matter AFAIC.

        • Now days you wont find it at 500 was what i was getting at look at6 the past few nexus releases none have been even close to $500 at release.

im well aware of the huge prices now which is why i dont buy mobiles at release i only just bought a Galaxy s7 for $680 Australian stock during last ebay 15% off sale.

        • The Nexus 5 had less than optimal build quality, a cheaper plastic body and a pretty crappy camera. It was good for the price, but wasn't as high end as flagships nowadays are.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness: Sure in terms of spec's (even of the day) the 5 is no Pixel, but was it only half as good as the best phone of the day? I don't think so.

        • Every other companies doing this, they come out undercut the price, gaining market and then BOOM!!!
Paying over thousand dollar for a phone is a joke

    • The phone's price only sucks in Australia.

In America, it costs the same as an iphone, so people won't be alarmed at the price.

      • -3

So who would buy an iPhone 6 with a google logo on the back when you can buy an iPhone 7 for the same price?

        • What? The Pixel is better than an iphone 6 and it's not running iOS.
Google has over a million fans in the US.

        • -2

@niner: Won't wether it's better or worse until it comes out…. It looks just like an iPhone 6 though only 4x the price.

Apple has a 100 million fans in the US…..

        • @TheClipIt:

I don't know why you're still talking about iphones. Android users, especially Google phone fans don't care about iphones. We honestly don't.

I don't care what it looks like, because all smartphones look the same except Samsung's phones.

        • +1

          @niner:

Is that why you're always in all Apple related deals and topics spouting Android fanboyisms? Cos you don't care? Hahahaha

Ps. If this was in the $800 region, it would sell in record numbers.

        • -1

          @ozeebee:

Don't care about iphones. Do care about iphone users.

Trying to steer the sheep in a new direction.

        • +1

          @niner:

That makes you an Android sheep then? Or maybe only Apple users allowed to be called sheep hey?

        • -1

          @ozeebee:

          Android is not a company.
Apple only have one kind of phone. The iturd.

        • -2

          @niner:

Trying to steer the sheep in a new direction.

Wow you Android zealots are some sad, sad people.

I think it's you who is the sheep.

        • @niner:

          Proves my point =)

        • -1

          @TheClipIt
You are delusional mate. Even Nexus is way ahead. And BTW, it is Apple who copies features, as the flagship Android phones already have most of the features that Apple "introduces". Try a real phone before making off the cuff remarks.

        • @niner:

Everyone knows that androids dream of electric sheep..

      • +1

By that logic, people in Australia shouldn't be alarmed too - the Pixel AUD prices are exactly the same as the Iphone 7 and 7 Plus AUD prices

        • -1

Don't say by that logic, because that sort of reasoning does not work.

This is the normal price for phones in the US. In AUstralia, the phone prices vary.
I use to live in the US and the price for this phone is pretty normal to me.

        • @niner: I see your point and I agree. The falling AUD has led to a drastic rise in some phone prices which I find quite ridiculous

      • +2

If you check JB Hifi page all the prices are identical to the Iphone 7 aswell.

        • +1

Why are people complaining about the price then?

        • +1

          @niner:

I think Historically because the flagship Androids have always been cheaper than the iPhone and always been under the 1k AUD mark.

        • @Voldox:

I understand what everyone is saying.

Forget everything I said, because people are getting a bit confused.

I just want people to know that as a former US resident, Android phones being similar in price to the new iphone is a familiar sight.

It seems like it's happening in Australia now.

        • @niner: I couldn't care less that it costs the same as ridiculously overpriced crap (especially in another country.)

        • +1

          @McFly:

Joe Hockey: "get a good job that pays good money".

        • +2

@niner: Nothing to do with it. The fact is the reason I can afford to buy as many Pixels as I want is because I'm smart enough not to buy as many Pixels as I want.

      • +1

The Pixel and iPhone 7 cost literally the exact same amount in Australia.

        • THEN DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PRICE!

That's all I am saying. I wasn't shouting at you, but all the other whingers in this thread.

        • @niner: Jesus Christ, you literally JUST said:

The phone's price only sucks in Australia.

In America, it costs the same as an iphone, so people won't be alarmed at the price.

I said NOTHING about whether the price is good or bad. Re-read your own comment before having a psycho rant next time.

        • @MrMcHairyHead:

I said NOTHING about whether the price is good or bad

          I know you didn't. That's why I said I wasn't shouting at you.

You don't even know what psycho means. I wasn't ranting. I was replying to people's comments.
I was simply stating that people should not be alarmed at the price considering it is the same as an iphone in the US. Australia needs to get use to it.

In AUstralia, people have this notion that all flagship phones should be cheaper than an iphone. That's not the case. That's Apple increasing their profit margins by trying to act superior to the competition, hence the price in Australia.

      • In Australia, the Pixel also cost the same as the iphone. you shouldn't be alarmed either.

  • +7

Four figures on a phone and it doesn't even have a micro sd slot!.

  • +3

    LG V20 here i come!

  • +1

Can't believe the cheapest version is >$1K. What a let down!

    • Probably google think as long as their prices less than apple (by a dollar) that will make people buy pixel.

      • Well they didn't, the Pixel and iPhone are the exact same price.

        • +2

          ok so:
Probably google think people will buy pixel at the same price as iphone because pixel has earphone jack.

    • I can't believe I bought my (grey import) Samsung Note 2 from Kogan 2 months after it was release for I'm pretty sure under $500 AUD and now look at the state of the market…

  • looks like google is trying to remove the 'budget flagship killer' reputation.
Nexus 5 was almost half the price of the Samsung G5 and HTC One M8.
Prices slowly crept up in the next few generations.

Now with the Pixel launch and rebrand i think they are trying to make the statement they are just as good as Apple and warrant apple like prices.

I doing so it may have alienated the budget conscious market share they once had.

    • Maybe because One+ and Xiaomi have moved into the space? Still, I liked the 'budget flagship killer' concept over the 'this phone is 10% better than last year's model and 50% more expensive' concept.

      • Definitely, budget Chinese OEMs are putting a lot of pressure on the others. I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of them bow out of the market in the next few years because of it.

        • more or less once they have a cult following slowly creep up their prices.

  • Would it be better buying from JB-hifi or through the google store? In terms of warranty wise?

Does the google store offer free RMA returns via post?

    • +4

it would be best NOT to buy, not even considering, not even discussing

    • +2

Does the google store offer free RMA returns via post?

I believe they do. Don't quote me on this, but I recall people getting courier pickup and delivery for RMAs with previous Nexuses. Might be worth following up, but I'm pretty sure Google is the better choice of the two.

      • last time i had an RMA I dealt with Toll Priority.

        • How was the RMA process? How long did it take?

        • @MysticalWok:
A few days, they will send a replacement phone before you send your.

        • @MysticalWok:
          Didn't take too long.
I actually didn't organise a courier. i dropped it off at the TP depot because it was faster for me that way.

  • +4

Bezel is too huge, just like the Iphone. Will buy an Iphone if I was to spend so much money, at least you knows Iphone have huge resale value when you upgrade next year. Google must thought they have die hard fans like Apple to price these phones at these prices.

    • Completely agree, the only thing that stops me is the fact that I've invested in apps on Google Play and don't want to have to re-purchase them

  • +1

Generic software, generic hardware… premium price. Meh!

    • +1

Generic software is a win for me and most others around here. Stock Android without any OEM "improvements". Harware? What flagship phone isn't 90% the same as any other flagship inside? They all use a handfull of chipsets/camera/screen/memory manufacturers - Apple included.

      • +1

Apple does the R&D for their own chips and they were the first to adopt NVMe type storage by writing their own custom controller. Even after a year from the launch, there is no other phone which uses the same storage technology as the iPhone.

Now let me ask you a question - why would anyone in their right mind should cough up for a pixel device when a OnePlus 3 with better specs is almost half the price? Generic hardware and software cannot command a pricing premium and I hope and pray Google learns it the hard way.
