Made by Google Event (Pixel Phones)

Google has finally released their phones for this year replacing the Nexus line, Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL.

List of specs http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8345&idPhone2=…

Nothing super special, but it's great that the Pixel XL has a 3450mah battery, usb type C, snapdragon 821, and apparently a great camera; but we'll have to wait for reviews to see if it's that good. Storage options are 32GB or 128GB

Free unlimited cloud storage for photos and videos (including 4k videos) for Pixel owners
Automatic Updates - definitely not a fan, especially since it installs in the background

https://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Pixel-smartphone-camera-revi…

Received top marks from DXOMark for it's camera.

Pixel (32GB) is $1079
Pixel (128GB) is $1229

Pixel XL (32GB) is $1269
Pixel XL (128GB) is $1419

Just saw on Facebook that Telstra have it exclusively. Pixel 32GB with 10GB data is $99/m.

Just added the same poll as on androidpolice.

Samsung did it first with their laptops. Intel, Samsung, Sandisk, Dell, and Seagate were the ones who designed NVME. Samsung makes and designs Apple's memory chips. Samsung is the leader in NVME enabled technology. Samsung hasn't implemented it in their phones, because most people don't need gigabyte read/write speeds in a 32 GB samsung galaxy s7.

Having NVME technology is absolutely unnecessary for phones at this stage unless you're reading/writing gigabytes of files a second. Why do you people think having overpowered chips and processors is needed for phones when most people's desktop/laptops doesn't even have that type of technology? It's the same with internet speeds. Who needs 1 Gb/s 4G when phones have such limited storage capacities?
It's not really an appealing feature of the phone if 99% of people won't use it to its full extent.

I do agree with the phrase 'if we can do it, why not?' I just think that it's not an important feature of the phone when talking about phones.
Most people looking to buy the Pixel phone do not give two shits about iPhones. I don't know why you have to bring them up. We do not care. :)

As someone who uses NVME storage devices, I can honestly tell you that there's no difference in everyday performance. It's only when I transfer b1g files around the place and unzip/zip files.

For that price, it might be one of the ugliest phone on the planet right now. Also, not just the phone even the name of the color is not classy!

Yes, I do like the fact that you get unlimited space for photos and videos but that ain't enough to convince me to buy this phone!

Good luck Google, but perhaps you should just focus on software for now.

    • Also, not just the phone even the name of the color is not classy!

They're clearly going for quirky over classy.

  • Is it me or this Pixel phone is ugly as a MOFO? Besides, I don't find a vanilla android experience fascinating at all, I find it dull and boring.

    • +2

I find it does the job beautifully, especially with something like NovaLauncher (Prime, which I picked up for a buck or so.)

    • It'll come with a lightly customized experience, Pixel Launcher I think it's called, which will be exclusive for this particular device.

      http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/10/04/google-says-pixel-la…

  • Yeah, not particularly impressed with it myself. For one, they could definitely have done with a more middle-ranged offering as well, though their Pixel Chromebooks weren't exactly affordable either, so I guess they're targeting the very top of the line (to a fault).

The design is also pretty disappointing. It definitely looks generic, and the glass back just looks weird. It reminds me of dime a dozen, ugly case designs I wouldn't pay a second thought to. Definitely expect better from the highest end phone from Android's leading company who are touting the phone's 'newness' in commercials. Nothing particularly cutting edge or new about it, tbh.

The future of the series is more interesting than the present, especially with the rumours about their 'Andromeda' hybrid OS. I'll be keenly looking to V2, but in the mean time, I'll continue loving my Nexus 6p.

I think you all should just buy a Note 7 or S7 Edge. That's what I did.

Touchwiz is the best. My phone storage is maxed out at 32 GB with my junk and my SD card too and the phone still is as fast as they come while driving a QHD display.

  • Got a Nexus 5x from the 15% off ebay sale on its way right now. That should do the job for now =)

  • +1

Phones look great but not at those prices.

i.e. S7 and S7 edge are cheaper and mostly have better specs.

  • Was going to pull the trigger for a blue one. OOS :(

  • +1

    Such a shame.

My first smartphone was an 8GB N4 bought through a deal posted on here! I fell in love with the customisation and simple but effective OS. I was from then on (I thought) a loyal Google customer.

Then many people saw the price creep of the N5, and then 5X/6P and were fearful. I actually decided to upgrade to an S6 when they were released (another really good to hard to resist JB promo on OzB) but thought of it as a once-off, and would go back to pure Android.

I even recently purchased an ASUS Chromebook and am a fan of the Android ecosystem (Gmail, Maps, YouTube, News etc)

    Then this happens.

What is Google doing? They need to differentiate themselves from Apple and sharper pricing is a core strategy they should've used. Yes, I know the days of $500 flagships are probably past us, but to charge over $1,000 for a phone is just plain wrong. It will cement iOS user numbers and their desire to remain with Apple will stay strong. It will ensure people taking a risk and going Android for the first time when 13-14yo is a 'niche' decision.

You factor in a screen replacement and obsolescence in 18-24mths and it's a simple decision for many of us.

    Xiaomi
    Samsung
    One Plus
    LG
or God forbid, iPhone (although I'm kinda a fan of the SE)

RIP Nexus, and pure Android for the average Joe IMO; it was fun while it lasted.

    • I had a pretty similar experience! Bought N4 from a deal posted on OzB and had it for 2.5 years before it was stolen :(

To be fair, N5 had a pretty approachable price point from the start (although it was nothing like N4). and N5X eventually reached a really good price point for the hardware IMO, and 6P is still a bit expensive but reasonably priced in comparison to the current competition.

I agree that the new price point for pixel is just ridiculous to people on OzB, although not unjustified considering how well Apple does with iPhones in that "absolute premium" level market of smartphones.

Similarly to what you have said, I'm actually quite glad that I purchased my N6P earlier this year which might be the last pure android flagship with a reasonable price.

      Haha

I'll get one in 6mths when Google realised they've messed up, ie their warehouses are full of unsold stock and the inevitable fire sale following (inventory storage isn't cheap)

    • Also I read apparently they're already testing out pixel v2 and it's camera, since they're bringing design in-house they have earlier access to design stages.

1.0 products are usually worth skipping, I'm excited for pixel 2, Google would've learnt proper pricing strategies by then also

      • if this is a taste of what 'designing in-house' is like, then please give it back to the phone manufacturers. It looks like they took a HTC One A9 and removed the home button.

  • find it funny how google thought they could price it at apple/samsung prices, but forgot they have close to 0% market share with phones

    • I just think that they think they are so big as a company they can just be arrogant. Hope they fail and the next round they realise their stuff up. Shit stabbers.

  • The 3450MaH battery may sound good on paper but it is terrible with the software. I have a Nexus 6P and has the same size battery, and it just about lasts a day. In my opinion this has been the biggest let down for me. I was hoping for something like the 6P with the same price but Google has just screwed it up.

    • -1

It's because Android is not an efficient software. Doesn't matter the battery size if in the background, it will get chewed for processes which the user never wanted it to do.

  • +1

The problem with this phone is it tries to replicate an IPhone too much not just in design but in price.

Apple has the luxury to charge their prices because it is literally the only one in the market. No one else can sell a phone with IOS but Apple.

Google's problem is there are many other companies selling far superior products for much less with the same Android software. This eliminates any reason to even buy this overpriced copycat. Sorry but at $800 this would sell in big numbers. But at this price, no way.

    • The phone also has a 24 hour support helpline actually, similar to the iPhone. The tech support agent can see what you see on the phone (screen sharing)

There is no Genius bar face-to-face support but for the tech dum-dumbs the premium price tag might seem worthwhile.

  • +1

Just had some hands on time with the phone.

Seems impressive. Very iPhone like (especially the price). Plans will be priced to compete with iPhone models.

Don't like the 1 speaker and side buttons but they are by no means bad. Voice assistant seems great. Very natural like Siri, but seems to take it one step further in voice based commands. No real difference between the XL model except screen size and battery, but battery on them are huge.

Overall it looks like it will be a great Samsung/iPhone alternative.

  • I'm disappointed, I was really really hoping the 7inch next gen would be announced in this event and for a decent price. But with pixel moving to the premium space would be very hard for them to release a budget line tablet like the Nexus 7.

Glad I decided to spend my money on the lumia 950 phone and keep my fully functional nexus 7 2nd gen tablet for now.

    • The 7 inch tablet market has shrunk considerably because 5.5 inch phones are very common now, making them largely orphaned devices that are too big to be carried in a pocket yet too small for any kind of multimedia enjoyment.

Once you owned a 5.5" device you'd probably never need to use a 7" tab anymore.

Google probably found it useless to compete against the Amazon 7" Fire tablet, since that only costs $50 US dollars and that has much better market penetration.

What is growing rapidly though, are two-in-one devices that mimic Pc's, mainly because people use them as more often since they have enough power under the hood these days (thanks to Intel) to consider using them as mobile workstations.

and they're very cheap too. $500 dollars would get you something pretty decent from Acer or Lenovo.

  • So they priced pixel similar to iPhone. What will happen to Samsung Galaxy series. Will they beat them or keep it lower to fill the gap?

  • Why can't I buy a Nexus? Any reason for removing these phones from the market completely? Even Apple has budget phones.

This phone seems like a crock anyway. So disappointing. Best mid priced android alternative anyone?

    • Nexus 5X/6P

    • They're not completely removed. You can still find them at retail stores, just not on the Google Play Store

  • What was actually most interesting about todays Google hypegasm was tablets: or rather the lack of any.

More evidence that Google does not give 2 (profanity) about tablets, most likely because they're pretty shit data collection devices compared to phones since they don't leave the house much and people tend to use pooters still to do serious stuff like researching Hello Kitty purchases.

So Android tablets will remain awful due to interface design decision by Google.

    • +1

The markets for smaller tablets have shrunk too that's why Google doesn't find it profitable to create a new tablet product line.

      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Global-sales-of-tablets-have-sh…

In particular, TrendForce has noted that customer interest in 7-inch tablets have waned considerably. For example, 7-inch tablets made up 51 percent of all tablet shipments in Q1 2015 compared to just under 40 percent as of Q1 2016. Meanwhile, shipments of tablets larger than 11-inches in screen size have skyrocketed from 1.5 percent in Q1 2015 to 10 percent as of Q1 2016 due to the introduction of successful models like the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 series.

The top 3 largest tablet manufacturers continue to be Apple, Samsung, and Amazon in that order. As expected, QoQ shipment numbers for all manufacturers tanked due to the Holiday Q4 2015 season. Nonetheless, Huawei experienced the smallest decline in terms of percentages at only 10 percent compared to the 47 percent decline from Amazon.

  • +1

    RIP Nexus :(

  • People, stop saying the Nexus was only half the price. the Nexus is all plastic while the Pixel is aluminium, like the iphone built. Hence the price similarity.
Google obviously targeting the high end users while Nexus is for lower market. Just pick what you can afford!!!

    • +1

So 2 grams of aluminium cost $500?

      • I don't know how much aluminium worth cos I don't make that sh!t, but Apple doing it, Samsung doing it, and now Google. It must be!

        • +1

2g of gold isn't worth $500. But I agree with your point, why should apple and samsung make all the money, and google has to compete with all the chinese brands for the low margin market.

        • -1

@rememberme: That doesn't mean Google had to go Ap(pl)e-s**t on us! They could have priced it (even a bit) better than Apple and it's win-win for everyone.

        • @McFly: At the end of the day, if you're selling the "exact" same product as everyone else. Why should you be in the loss?
But I'm sure Google will still keeping the Nexus brand for more budget friendly market.

        • @rememberme: Some of the Xiaomi & Huawei phones are nearly at 1 grand mark. It's a matter of time before the Chinese brands jack up their price.

        • @mcp2kpro: I don't see them for sale at Google website anymore.

        • @Colombian: Oh really, I didn't realise they also kill the Nexus brand. What a shame, its a great budget phone. But worry not, the Motorola is just as good and cheap. For $400 mark you get a decent large screen & stock Android. I have both G4 Plus & the X Style. Nothing to brag about the camera though.

        • @mcp2kpro: Who said they should/would make a loss?
          Cheaper price=more sales=more profit. It's not time-travel science.

        • @McFly: Higher price = higher profit = crushing competitors with more fire power. Also not rocket science.

        • @mcp2kpro: Too high price=less sales=less profit=crushing defeat.

        • @McFly: ah well, apple sale is kinda contradicting your theory. But that's their games to play. We, end users, have no say in how they should run their business.

        • @mcp2kpro: Not really. Apple are masters of marketing. If Google can match them on that then it will go well for them. Time will tell, but (without taking a ride in my car,) I would bet they can't match them.

        • @McFly: Thats because they have lots of money to play with and it works. Once you run out the juice to marketing, then your products will also die. I personally think Google should stick to their more budget friendly phone but I guess they have thought a lot more than we do and they think its time for a change. So it is. Just have to wait and see how their Pixel stack up against the competitors. I wouldn't pay a grand for any phone so I won't be interested in it.

        • +1

@mcp2kpro: That's the $1,079 dollar question is isn't it. If there are too many (Android) people like us it's not going to end well. The problem is… well, check out the poll results!

        • @McFly: You are assuming the extra sales make up for the money lost when selling it cheaper.

Apple sells more phones than many other brands

        • @rememberme:

You are assuming the extra sales make up for the money lost when selling it cheaper.

          Yes…

          check out the poll results!

Apple sells more phones than many other brands

Yes, because of the marketing, but they do not sell the most, and Huawei are gaining on them - and surely a lot of that comes from lower-end devices. Also, iOS makes up (being generous) 'only' a quarter of the smart phone installed base.

        • @McFly: the poll result (merely based on 358 voters) is reflecting (somewhat) the Android user market. 326 people have never and wont spend more than a grand on phone. 23 people has the cash and will, 1 rich ass mofo will buy both, and 8 opportunists.
In reality, there are few hundreds millions android users worldwide. Just time that and you have the sale statistic for Pixel

        • (merely based on 358 voters)

Sure, it's only the Internet, but thousands reputable of polls/studies have been made with much less than the 380 samples we have now (and the 'Neither' vote is the only one growing appreciably.)

326 people have never and wont spend more than a grand on phone

          That's totally made up.

In reality, there are few hundreds millions android users worldwide. Just time that and you have the sale statistic for Pixel

Also made up - just wishful thinking.

        • @McFly:

but thousands reputable of polls/studies have been made with much less than the 380 samples we have now

          That's made up

Also made up - just wishful thinking

          https://www.statista.com/statistics/263445/global-smartphone…

        • @mcp2kpro:

          That's made up

If you think 440 (what we are now up to, BTW again with almost all of the increase coming from 'Neither') isn't a reasonable sample size then you need to educate yourself on statistics.

          https://www.statista.com/statistics/263445/global-smartphone…

Yes, I'm well aware of Android's huge market share. Show me the graph that says how many are going to buy a Pixel.

    • I'm thinking the camera but not by $500

      • No phone should cost more than a grand regardless how much tech they trying to marketing. But if your product don't cost as much as others, then you're in for a failure.
It's a dog eats dog world

    • My Nexus 6P is Aluminium for the record.

  • +2

    Revised prices by me:

    Pixel 32gb $649
    Pixel 128gb $799

    Pixel XL 32gb $899
    Pixel XL 128gb $1099

Imagine if those were the prices?

It sucks also that 32gb is not enough for some people, yet the only other option is 128gb when 64gb would have done perfect.

I don't understand when big ass companies like Google charge more and take away other stuff at the same time.

The prices are nothing short of horrific.

  • +1

Quite Black, Really Blue and Very Silver.

  • +2

Looks like I'll be grabbing the next Nexus 6p Special.

6p is a great phone even now I think.

  • Ok I've been holding off getting a new phone for months I'm on an old LG g2 and was waiting for this but oh my what a disappointment.

2 main problems with this phone. One is the size of the bottom bezel so huge and waste of space looks like a cheap ZTE $40 phone it really is oNE ugly looking phone and unnecessarily large. Second the price, come on $1420??? That's outrageous even when u factor in the ozzie tax. Just out of reach

    • +1

Wait a year and depending how sales goes, will depreciate between 30-40%.

  • +1

Ridiculous prices for a fecking phone, think I'll stick with my Nexus 4

    • Surprised the battery still works.

  • Nexus devices will not get Pixel features

    https://news.slashdot.org/story/16/10/05/2127235/android-71-…

    • +1

      XDA says otherwise.

  • This is just a shame honestly, I really wanted the Pixel phone to be great. Considering they're dropping the nexus line for it, I had hoped for a Google developed Nexus. I even sat their telling myself it was a good phone, until the denial washed away.

The price seems like double the price of a 6p? I can find prices of a 6p for like $600 (Had to grab a bargain), but $1200 for the pixel? I can get 2 Nexus 6p for that (or buy 1 and save the extra for a better phone down the track) which we all know a better phone will be out in x months time.

    Discussion of specs aside,
My original thought was: "Oh google is removing the nexus line as they will be taking it up personally"
But now thats turned into" "Google removed the nexus to decrease competition with its own phone, and they can capatalize on being the only phone they support officially"

Because lets be honest, one of the best things about the nexus phones besides the awesome price was the support not just by Google but by the community itself in terms of Roms, updates and ensuring games and apps run on a "flagship" phone.

  • When they 50% discount, people might start to buy them, Both phone looks too average, they didn't have the feeling of luxury, but the price is luxury

  • Seems like these phones are direct competitors to the iphone. Better camera than the iphone (supposedly) and unlimited phone & video storage, where as apples icloud costs $ after 5gb.

I think I'll be getting either the first decent cheap chinese android phone with Android 7.0 that comes out, or a Sumsung S7 in the next month or two.

  • When will the blue pixel be available ?

  • Looks like I'll be in the minority then having pre-ordered the XL. Salary sacrifice for a work phone helps take the sting out of it, but I'd still rather google's phone over a samsung (ok, so I'll miss waterproofing) or apple (too deep in the play ecosystem, plus never again).
Google has been edging the price north since the Nexus 6, so this was no surprise. I also suspect that accounts required different margins for a phone they were "manufacturing" compared to one they were just selling. Everyone in the supply chain wants their margin.

I did double check with google support to make sure I wouldn't pay any GST on import since they don't list the tax when you order online. First time they've sold something over the $1000 threshold for goods shipped into Australia to have GST applied by customs. Just have to trust that's all in hand.

I just wish they'd get their act together & have the cases ready to go at launch.

Still, I'm looking forward to it. If the Pixel C was any indication, google really does know hardware. Just going to have to trust the launch software is a little better sorted than it was on the pixel c.

  • the Pixel phones gets my Shonky award …

  • People here still expecting a nexus phone when they clearly renamed it so that it shouldn't be expected. It seems like a pretty top phone for a price I'd expect

  • Wow just realised I've been using Android for the past 6+yrs. Found an Apple 5s somewhere and gave it to my 7yr old who said "I will have the coolest phone…this is the coolest phone showing on TV and everywhere"… (referring to Apple) sounds like a few of posters on here ;)
Mind you, I'm not that excited by the Edge 7 (which I have).
    Pixel sadly overpriced.

  • +1

I am unsubscribing from this thread. Everytime I see this pop up in my inbox, I think of that Adam Sandler movie for a moment and want to puke.

  • The main thing people seem to be complaining about is the price. They're upset that it's not cheap like a Nexus. Guess what? It's not a Nexus device. It's meant to be a premium device, made of premium materials, with a price tag that matches other premium handsets.

It seems to have good specs, a great camera, fast charging, unlimited storage for full resolutions photos and 4K videos (which solves one of the biggest gripes of a lot of people I know). You get an AI assistant, it's VR ready, and you can get an official VR headset (with motion controller), for a decent price soon after launch.

What makes it worse than other phones with a similar price?

    • It's the same price as the iphone. If you want iOS, you have to get an iphone. If you want android, there are a lot more options that are better value.

I think most of the sales will be those through carriers to mums and dads that aren't tech savvy.

      • Do you feel that way about Samsung too?

        • Yes, but Samsung S7 does have reputation of being a great phone.

        • @ozhunter:

And you've already decided the Pixel won't?

  • I think smartphones are overpriced anyway, but it looks like a great camera and unlimited storage for images and videos have pushed the price up.

I still don't understand why there isn't a 64gb option? 32gb is slowly becoming redundant unless you're purely using it as a phone with several system apps. On a typical 32gb device, you will have 19gb remaining with some system apps installed and the OS. That's not an issue if you're using the phone like this, but gee, with app caching, I can see why they have an unlimited option for storage now.

  • Wow, one rich MOFO is gonna buy both. Good to you my friend.

  • And just as expected Google has pushed out a bland and uninspired iphone copy piece of hardware that isn't faster than other 820 based devices despite having a 1 tacked onto it.

    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/10/google-pixel-review-b…

Not sure why you would pay such a ridiculous price for a device designed by an advertising business to record every single thing about you in order to sell you tat.

  • Pixel's getting some great reviews, which seem to help Google's stock price. http://www.gsmarena.com/googles_stock_price_soars_to_highest…

Camera's up there with the best of the best smartphones
