Condition 9.2 is holding me back. These flights are empty. Doing a dummy booking all the way through to seat selection shows some flights empty and other flights with 5 or so bookings. All that September launch frenzy sold nada

    • Silly layover 7pm to 2am in Singapore is probably the reason

      • If it's coming from Athens, most likely it will leave 3-4 late anyway…

Don't you have to pay for a seat allocation? Perhaps everyone has opted not to and just take what they're given at checkin?

      • Don't you have to pay for a seat allocation?

and food, and luggage and quite likely using the toilet too…

      • Yeah your right. I'd definitely book if I knew they weren't going to cancel my flight. Too many stories online. Wish I knew

        • IWTF posts are on here on a regular basis, I didn't know there was a risk of the flight being canceled has this really happened many times? wouldn't want to plan a holiday and be left without a way to get there! How far before departure would the confirmation come that the flight is going ahead? Could a travel Insurance cover this sort of thing?

@yacman: scoot to Athens is subject to regulatory approval still. Just google scoot cancel and see that they rely on condition 9.2 to offer alternative flight within 7 days or refund in form of voucher valid for 6 months. They also cancel routes that are yet to start. What I fear is booking and for the next 9 months fearing that they will cancel, but being unable to book an alternative airline in case the flight goes ahead.

        • @grasstown: Thanks for the info, so looks like if your set on traveling then you should avoid scoot as you won't have this issue with the other airlines on offer, but they could be good if you want a cheap potential spir of the moment type holiday.

  • I opened the page and I read Athens as Aliens and thought who are IWTF's real clientele?

Price is good if you have to buy one way ticket.

  • 6-8 weeks. Not many people have that much time for travel.

Millions of people have that much time (and more) to travel!

The prices aren't bad if you want to go to Athens in summer, but considering low-quality airlines like Vietnam airlines, China Southern and Air China can often get you into countries further west in Europe for ~ $1000 fares it's hard to get too excited (Skyscanner: Sydney to everywhere, cheapest month for an idea). If you're the type to take 20kg luggage these fares are really ~$1034 from Sydney (without food and CC charges).

This disappointment is only because I used to think the likes of AirAsia, Scoot and Cebu would be game-changers in Euro flight prices.

Great for consistent one way fares though.

    • airplane efficiency is playing catch up (a350, A330-900neo), eventually the likes of the budget airlines will change the euro routes

      • Likewise with the uptake/purchasing of the 787

    • Thats so true, if with 20 kg and food adding up similar as other airlines then whats point actually. Its hard to travel to Europe without shopping :)

  • I hear there's a big flight sale on click frenzy on the 18th, would it be worth waiting to see what they offer and hold off on this? there is also a travel expo at the end of the month that typically sees 15% off flight sales apparently?

I am tossing up between booking through a Travel Agent or myself, does anyone have advice, at the moment travel agent is $2200 return with emirates and 1 lay-over. These prices are far cheaper but how comfortable are these airlines, it's a long flight, I don't want to sacrifice comfort for a small amount of $$$

    • Can't comment on the sales, but I've flown Scoot to Thailand and back. You're paying for a seat and not a lot else, but it's not uncomfortable. Jetstar sort of levels.

    • In Economy, Scoot fits you in on a 3-4-3 config on a 787. It's pretty cramped. OK for Singapore, I would not fly onwards to Europe in that though. Likewise, Emirates flies you to Dubai on an A380 (Unless from Adelaide, which is the more cramped 777) which has bigger seats and more comfortable.

For $2200, you can probably secure yourself a business class seat in Scoot which is actually very comfortable. Done it a few times. Would do it again, even to EU!

      Are you flexible with dates?

Emirates is a premium airline so it's rarely the cheapest even on sale. The fastest route to Athens and back (close to 20 hours) is probably via Qatar airways, which may be cheaper than Emirates.

If your heart is set on a full service airline just go to Skyscanner and search for your flight to Athens and back on different days with a filter for 1 stopover. I'm sure you'll find cheaper than $2200 on Emirates (serves Qantas) or Qatar with Bestjet or iFly etc (which have ABNs) and get Flight Centre to match it.

In fact, you'll get cheaper than $2200 with Emirates even if you do multi-trip. Maybe fly to Athens and back from London, for example, and extend your holiday.

    • Emirates is great but that price is not.

  • I wouldn't go to Greece even if you paid me.
