      Looks like the one in the case is cheaper than the options with the coloured grips, by about $8.

  • Ordered, thanks OP! Also picked up one of these carry cases https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002R9CQYK/ which was a pretty good deal. Just need to pick up an additional cable.

    Not that great of a deal.

    I prefer this hard drive… its a seagate so you know you're getting quality, and its a 2.5" portable hard drive like this one.

    • "its a seagate so you know you're getting quality"

      I know seagate and WD are probly the two market leaders in hard drives, is there a significant difference in reliability between the two?

      • +3

        It all depends on the model. Some Seagates are shit. Some WD's are shit. Others are brilliant. Unfortunately, you have to do your research on every single model that comes out, for reliability (which of course, takes months to get the date post release).

        This is a good unbiased resource:

        • Whole reason why I am in the market at the moment is due to a 3tb seagate failing, again I can't really use that as a negative against them, i've had good and bad sg's and wd's.

          Maxtors on the otherhands i've never had one survive more than a year, samsung / hgst never had one fail yet.

          Thats not to say it won't happen and others won't have the same issue, i've always found it better to use the toyota method.

          Buy the most common model, then any issues, replacements arent that hard and sometimes you can even transplant parts to recover files.
          If there end up being any big issues with the series you generally hear about it before it affects you and you can prepare for it.

          @acex1138: 3TB Seagates were a stinker, and I'm a fan!

        • @endotherm: yup, had mine die on me friday night with all my ps4 data on it including P.T.

    • its a seagate so you know you're getting quality

      Actually, Seagate tends to have above industry average failures, but they are getting better.

      Ultimately, any drive can fail at any time, so whatever you buy, back it up.

      (Edit: Ahhh, Storm just linked to same article while I was pulling this together)

      • I used to swear by Seagates, especially the Barracuda series. Brilliant. Then something happened at Seagate and they all went to unreliable crap, so I switched to WD. Then Seagate fixed up their stuff after a few years and I've been using them again. I just wish I could backup onto multiple terabyte optical discs… so maybe I should look into BD Writers again (last time I looked the blank discs were a huge rip-off).

        • You must have a large archive of movies. 😲

          @O O:

          yeah, but I'm not too worried about losing the downloaded stuff… it's more the 3TB of family photo's/video's etc.

    • Perfect solution Jason88, just ordered one of the seagates bro, cheers!

    • Seagate. Good luck with that. Please report back once it fails without warning.

      TIA

  • I just had another look and noticed they dropped the price even further! price now $177.51 AUD
