      Here are some feedbacks from buyers
      
      Most external hard drives allow you to open it up and plug it into an adaptor. This one does not. Everything is soldered together and there's no SATA access port.

      Incidentally, learning from the data recovery process - WD drives have a non-standard proprietary USB connector, soldered in. The hard drive itself cannot be removed from the casing and you cannot connect it to another source should there simply be a failure in the USB connection.

      @O O: Not surprised. I was trying to figure out what made these 'ultra' drives and it seems it is to do with the ability to encrypt the drive an make it secure - hardware based encryption would not tend to make this a nice destructible drive..

      Why? Because there are a few flaws in some models that are now fixed? Will this drive stop 99.999% of people from reading your data with its easy to use encryption? YES.

      You guys seem to be getting really offended by comments based on the fact of hard soldering a usb connector to the hard drive.
      
      This is a silly move to me and relegates it to a useless category as :
      
      A) this means it can't be transplanted into other devices limiting it's use
      B) hampers repair operations, this means even with damage to the drive parts such as the boards can't be transplanted to recover data.
      C) you can encrypt any device pretty easily, I fail to see that as a selling point of this.
      D) i've used a few of these in the past and been burned, yes many are going to stand up for them, western digital make great devices but hard wiring the connector to the drive itself has lead to many device stability issues, many due to normal wear and tear, and as mentioned above, break the connector on it, you literally have to send it back to WD for any repair which many times they've refused to do much.
      
      If you buy their sata drives they're awesome, but theres really no excuse to remove the sata port and hardwire a USB interface on other than for cost cutting and device restriction.

      If you are even considering Seagate drives then you are basically guaranteeing data loss at some point in your future. Source: I raise service calls for bad Seagate drives in the enterprise weekly. Caveat emptor.

      Seagate and WD are the two market leaders, everyone is going to have a different experience and good and bad series.
      
      I've actually had more WD's fail on me in the last 10 years than seagates, only reason why i'd choose seagate over western digital at the moment is WD soldering usb connectors onto the drives to restrict their use.
      
      Segates had a dud with the 3tb 3.5", wd's had issues with the 2tb sshd 2.5" drives.
      
      Many will have had both and had no issue.

I prefer this hard drive… its a seagate so you know you're getting quality, and its a 2.5" portable hard drive like this one.

    It all depends on the model. Some Seagates are shit. Some WD's are shit. Others are brilliant. Unfortunately, you have to do your research on every single model that comes out, for reliability (which of course, takes months to get the date post release).

      Whole reason why I am in the market at the moment is due to a 3tb seagate failing, again I can't really use that as a negative against them, i've had good and bad sg's and wd's.
      
      Maxtors on the otherhands i've never had one survive more than a year, samsung / hgst never had one fail yet.
      
      Thats not to say it won't happen and others won't have the same issue, i've always found it better to use the toyota method.
      
      Buy the most common model, then any issues, replacements arent that hard and sometimes you can even transplant parts to recover files.
      If there end up being any big issues with the series you generally hear about it before it affects you and you can prepare for it.

    I used to swear by Seagates, especially the Barracuda series. Brilliant. Then something happened at Seagate and they all went to unreliable crap, so I switched to WD. Then Seagate fixed up their stuff after a few years and I've been using them again. I just wish I could backup onto multiple terabyte optical discs… so maybe I should look into BD Writers again (last time I looked the blank discs were a huge rip-off).
