    R.I.P Samsung

    • +20

They own like one fifth of Korea. THey'll be fine.

The Galaxy phones are what more people want. Notes are for a small market.

      • +3

I wouldn't be standing at the base of Samsung office buildings, though.

      • Its not about the phone model, its about their way of doing business. This could easily have happened to the Galaxy model.

But yea, they'll survive as a company. They're well diversified and have tendrils into a lot of things with a big war chest of funds.

    • +3

Their lose in note 7 is like change in the bottom of my wifes handbag, they soon forget it ever happened and the lose will be just a small dent.

I wonder now of they can claim a tax benefit in the states?

        • +9

a bit dramatic? It wouldn't put any doubts in my head if I was considering buying Samsung. I just wouldn't buy the Note 7.

        • +5

They make TVs, fridges, mobile construction cranes.

They're going to go bankrupt from one line of their phones.

          Logic. Failing.

        • -6

          @tshow:

In the phone space at least, you can forget about ever beating apple now.

        • Dude that's like you saying Toyota is going to go broke from a recall of its cars??

Honestly I really wanted the note 7 over 7plus because iPhone's are just the same each year with totally un-customizable, unable to download torrents and restrictions everywhere… similar iOS each time. an extra camera this year tho.. Damn… Looks like another 2 years of iPhone..

        • -3

          @anthonyaaa:

lets see how well the next Samsung phone sells shall we?

btw, toyota had exploding cars that had to be destroyed?

        • +1

          @T1OOO:

btw, toyota had exploding cars that had to be destroyed?

They've had recalls of cars because they are unsafe to drive. Brakes, transmissions, air bags and stuff. Most car recalls are due to some part that fails which can compromise the safety of the car.

        • -8

          @lostn:

Was that your way of saying "no" ?

        • +2

@T1OOO: A car that will get you killed because the brakes fail is no better than an exploding phone.

        • +1

          @T1OOO:
I would rather my phone catch fire than my brakes fail going 110 down the highway.

        • +1

@T1OOO: Well their TRD Aurion line up initially had issues with the engine where it would explode/catch on fire. So… yes

        • @tshow: Insurance, finance, cargo ships, textiles. Saying that Samsung will fail because of this is like saying GE will fail because they brought out some bad fridges.

        • @anthonyaaa:

Samsung and Apple aren't the only 2 options.. What about a Pixel XL?

Looks like Google's Pixel range dropped just in time to take advantage of this snafu

        • @T1OOO: Toyota has had brakes that don't work???? Life and death difference to hand burns from a phone… Doesn't mean Toyota is going broke

Honestly it's 1 product … Doesn't mean a multi billion dollar company like Samsung is going to go broke… They are always reinventing and bringing out new things. And if one product goes bad you can't base an entire company on that one product out of 100's

Biggest oil spill in the world… Millions of sea life dead biggest Fine by US government in history… Doesn't mean BP is going to go broke…

Planes being grounded and all Qantas ground staff on strike. Qantas begging government for bail out. Bail out denied. Shares at all time low of 94cents. Thousands of jobs being laid. DOESNT MEAN QANTAS IS GOING TO GO BROKE.

Stop this doomsday mentality please. The world will tick along after this speedbump and the new note 8 will 100% be tested 100000 times before they rush this one out I can guarantee you . They were embarrassed and the costs alone taught them a big big lesson.
Same like BP same like qantas same like any company that gets a problem. They learn they fix and make sure they don't do the same mistakes.

What a shame, Note 4 was the best phone ever (died in an unfortunate boating splash). Then work gave me a Note 5 which was worse because it didn't have the microSD card slot, now I can't even look forward to upgrading to the Note 7???

I agree RIP Samsung, I've been a loyal fan but it's time to move onto Xiaomi, cheaper and better.

      • +4

Quick everyone, let's nominate the note 4 as the best phone ever because it has a removable battery and an ir blaster!

    • +4

Somehow I don't think it will be the end of Samsung just because 1 phone was a disaster. Do you realise how many different products and business divisions they have?

      • … and (by brand) they're all affected by this. Though SS is probably 2B2F (too big to fail).

As they should be, because they didn't test a completely new battery design, with less mechanical protection, insulation, tighter tolerances and a lot less resistance to shorting out, yet was assembled by hand and sourced from multiple manufacturers in a country where standards and production tolerances vary at every turn.

Even when the outcome of a failure was far worse than a device malfunction- and could easily be customers with 3rd degree burns, crashing planes and burning buildings.

1/100,000 failures didn't sound bad to someone, but what are the chances of the building they jump off being the one that catches fire due to someone's phone lighting up their workstation?

Perhaps not that much more- I imagine that every Samsung employee will be playing with a Note 7 now or soon, esp. once they start dumping the returned phones into markets in Africa…

        • Yeah, one plane was evacuated before take off because of a smoking note7. imagine if the plane had left 30 minutes earlier

      • +1

This! - Consumer mobile phones makes up less than 2% of their revenue.

      • +2

They're not dead, but it's a huge scandal that will make customers switch away from Samsung products in the phone space, and be wary of buying future models of Samsung phones even if they don't explode.

It's a huge disaster and will affect stock prices.

The silver lining is, Samsung is going to have to bend over backwards to repair the damage to their reputation. Maybe they will release a $500 flagship phone as an apology? Or slash prices of all their stuff? That will get people to buy again. Sell me an S7 for $500 AUD local stock and I'm in. I've got an S6 and was planning on waiting for S8 but I'll buy at that price.

If they don't do something, then the stigmata of "don't buy Samsung phones, they explode" will persist for years. Especially being perpetuated by those who don't even use Samsung products and hate Samsung (e.g. Apple loyalists). The uninformed will believe it and steer clear, and also tell people they know to steer clear.

It was a PR disaster for all phones to be recalled and replaced. When the replacement needs to be recalled also and the product line officially discontinued not long after release, it is a disaster they may never recover from.

Heads will roll for this. Maybe even the CEO's.

        • I believe your concerns are greatly exaggerated.

Their phones are one of their more minor divisions. Electronics is their strong suit and if you have a look at their stock price, this recall didn't even make a dent in their share price in the long run. The CEO won't be fired.

I have a Galaxy s7, I have no fear of the phone at all. I believe it was just one device, and given Samsung's track record, have no problem buying another one of their flagship phones when it's out.

        • @Serapis: Samsung make more than just phones, but they are the only manufacturer who can challenge Apple's dominance. I think that ambition is up in flames now.

Samsung is not going to go bust, but their market share in the smartphone space I think will permanently shrink.

I don't believe their phones will explode. It was limited to Note 7, but the damage to their reputation will persist across all their smartphones. Who is going to preorder a future phone, knowing something major like this was able to get past QA? Consumer confidence in them is lost, even if the products are fine.

I don't fear that the S7 or S8 will explode. But the uninformed people won't trust them, and they are a big number.

I have a Note 7 and still haven't received my loan phone from Optus or Samsung.
Note 7 was easily the best smartphone I have ever used. I really don't want to give it up and go back to an S7 Edge. What are the chances of the replacement ones catching fire?

    • +1

What are the chances of the replacement ones catching fire?

      Already started

      • -2

        I know, but that's not a number.

        • +18

          99%

        • +4

So even if someone on ozbargain was able to obtain the total number that overheated to date vs the total number sold, that still wouldn't answer your question.
What you want is someone to predict what % of phones will fail and the chances that yours will fail.
Even Samsung haven't been able to do this, as they obviously thought they fixed the problem.
How do you suppose someone from ozbargain will do that?

        • -1

          @OzzyOzbourne:

It really doesn't matter. 100% won't be permitted on planes. And if you have a fire good luck telling the insurance company why you didn't comply with the recall.

    • even if you use it, you won't get any software updates to the phone for future OS. If you do, it probably be one to brick the phone or something.

    • Its litterally a 0.001% chance, but the fact the chance exists is not happy for some people

      • +2

If that's your family that dies in a house fire, the odds mean jack shit.

        • There are more odds of dieing in a plane crash.

        • @oscinator1988:

There is literally zero chance of them dieing in a house fire caused by a phone you don't own.

  • Oh great. The Pixel one is exclusive to Telstra.

There are people selling their replacement Note 7 phones on gumtree now. lol

    • You can buy it from the Google store and JB.

    • oh that's really evil.

      • Will watch the news about possible V20 bootloops and if that's the case then I quit LG for good. For now, my bootloop-repaired G4 still runs strong.

        • I had to have mine replaced twice, not due to boot loop but because on both phone wifi and bluetooth just quit one day. First one was replaced same day. Second took 5 weeks and when I insisted on a replacement (due to no ETA on repair after 5 weeks) JB Hi Fi cancelled my Telstra contract without my permission to try to work around some loophole. Resulted in a couple more weeks of wrangling where I ended up with a better contract ($70 BYO plan with $20 discount) and a new outright G4 (so you can imagine how big a stuff up it was). Despite good final outcome, not worth the headache of dealing with.

I bet they will come up with a new name for their next generation Note.

Maybe Hindenberg would be a fitting name for the current gen.

  • +4

Xiaomi has never had an exploding battery problem. Let the reign of the budget Chinese smartphone begin!

    • -1

I heard that all spare parts Xiaomi used in their devices are also using on iPhone. They are using the same suppliers, that's why people call Xiaomi is the Chinese Apple

  • +11

Looks like the Note 7 went out with a bang…

  • +7

Guys, if you're wondering what to do with your Note KEEP IT AWAY FROM ANY SAMSUNG WASHING MACHINES YOU MAY HAVE. The consequences WILL BE DIRE.

    • -1

You'll end up with a mobile washiphone

    • Unless it is on fire, then quickly toss it in the washer to douse it!

  • +1

The Note 7 exploded on the news recently!

    • +3

It sure has ignited a lot of controversy hasn't it?

  • +2

Oh the ozbargainer in me is very excited about the possibilities this might provide

    • +1

Not in Australia. People will sell a burnt out phone for more than the original price!

UPDATE: THE SAMSUNG NOTE 7 HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY DISCONTINUED

  • RIP Galaxy Note Line
I loved my Note 2/3 I would of got a Note 7 if it wasnt for the over 1k price tag I still love my New Galaxy s7.

  • +6

Will there be a fire sale somewhere on the remaining stock?

    • I thought that's what lead to this in the first place? ;)

    • -2

you mean sale of fiery phone? or phone with free fire?
      you pick.

  • +4

Next note will have a removable battery : P

    • Whatever it has, I suspect the replacement won't be called a Note.

      • Better start patenting some names.

        • Can't patent a name
You copyright names or trademark them

        • @CozmerkIsenberg: sorry copyright….

      • Badged as IgNote naturally

  • After using a blackberry for 10 years the galaxy note has been great to use and love the s pen. What to do now? S7 will be replaced soon so might move to the iPhone 7 plus.

    • -1

get second hand galaxy note 4 or 5

  • +2

Samsung now mailing out bombproof fire proof boxes and radiation proof fire proof gloves to ship Note 7.

You think I'm joking don't you.

    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/10/heres-how-to-return-y…

Although doon't send it back to the UK: UK Post is refusing to carry briefcase nukes Note 7 period now.

  • -1

This is such an awesome phone. Had it 2 weeks now, absolutely love the thing and gutted we have to return it. I use the S pen heaps and an S7 Edge just isn't the same… I don't want to return it but at the same time I'm not too keen on the self destruct feature. Rang Samsung but they say there is no possibility of repair at the moment.

When is the Note 8 out?

    • you could get a note 5?

      • +2

I had the note 1, 2, 3, 4, then skipped the 5 because like so many others we were robbed of micoSD and removable batt. Finally the 7 comes out and all the power users jump back on the note bandwagon and then now this. So angry. Spent 2 days setting it up getting everythign the way it was on my old phone. :(

        • Same situation here, spent nearly 2 days too.

My mother is a bit annoyed, spent well over $200.00 on accessories for it.

Well, at least we got a free $50 Gift card from it.

        • +1

          @ElliotBro:

Yeah got the $50 too but it's not really much in the grand scheme of things. If you look on the recall webpage, you can submit invoices to Samdung to seek reimbursement for any related accessories.

        • we were robbed of micoSD and removable batt

I thought Note 7 does not have removable battery either?

        • @wildstone: it doesn't. But at least it has expnadable storage!

  • A real shame all around. I hope that Samsung bounce back with something stronger than the world has ever seen

    • +4

You never know, they just might come back with a bang!

      sorry

      • +1

That joke sure blew up in your face…

      • It will be a fiery entrance the next time around!

    • They're going to have to knock it out of the park with every phone from here on out, and drop the premium price tag imo.

    • Yeah, people can make their jokes, but I'm quite interested in what happens next. Samsung's going to be going all out for their next series, I reckon, possibly (hopefully) including a complete redesign from the ground up. They might even have to drop the Galaxy brand altogether.

  • Shame, it's a fantastic phone. I'm still more than happy with my S7 in any case. Best phone on the market imo

    • +1

Best phone on the market imo

      Yeah, it's da bomb! ;)

      • +2

Ha ha ha… Loving the puns

    • It is, but Samsung's reputation is up in flames now. Maybe even the entire Galaxy line of product will be renamed, not just the Note line.
