To keep in line with the cosmic theme.. they should rename it to Samsung SuperNova!

What I find amazing is that despite of the success of Note series, no-one else is making a stylus flagship. No options. Either go back to Note 5 or a long wait for next Note.

    • This - I've had a Note 2 and a 4, and when they removed removable batteries and memory cards I thought I would be done with the Notes. I can't believe there are no other stylus replacements out there, especially since a lot of the tablets now have styluses with them. So this release of the Note 7 was perfect for my contract expiring soon… but now I don't know what phone to get! :( And I'm sure the Note 8, if that, is going to be ages away

      • I'm sure when the Note 8 comes out, it will receive a warm welcome.

    • They might do an interim phone to release in the next few months (won't be called Note 7) that keeps all of its good features but fixes the exploding battery problem.

  • Sony Xperia XZ, I ordered one from Sony Hong Kong, when you pre-ordered you got 10% off, a free backpack, water bottle and extra year warranty.

In Australia you get 2 years warranty standard, $859 for a 32GB model from JB hifi,
my HK model is 64GB with dual sim/Hybrid sim slot, and I got the platinum colour which isn't available in Australia yet for 870.

So for around 20 bucks I got double the internal storage + Dual sim or SD card slot.

      Sony is a dying brand.

      • +1

agreed. I've owned a sony z2 and there was no reason to upgrade to any other xperia phones. They all just look plain and dull, sony are going down hill with phones. Unless they release Xperia Play 2 with todays specs.

        • +1

I'm on the Z2 as well, It's finally time to upgrade, the XZ is the best sony phone yet.

If the X Performance got 88 on DXOMark's camera tests, the XZ will do even better with the new RGB sensor and 5 axis digital image stabilisation.
Coming in first palce is the Pixel at a score of 89.

I just love the sony slate design, with its dual waterproof front facing speakers.

        • +1

I got a friend still on Z2 as well, but other Z series got so many troubles

    • Just curious how are you getting it shipped to Aus as I thought it's local shipping only?

Btw most Dual SIM phones in Australia will be obsolute after September 2017 as all networks will have turned off their 2G network.(Most dual sims run 2G on the 2nd slot)

      • I have friends travelling back to AU from HK, had their relatives receive it for me.

But yea, japan brands have always loved to have stores that don't ship internationally, or region lock (looking at you nintendo) and many other things, warranty is sucky for me too, i'd have to ship it back to HK. Or pay a premium here for it to get fixed if there was any dramas, and sony AUS is shit with their contracted fonebiz repair centre, they need to have their own official service centres like many other brands here in australia.

        • That's a good idea, since Sony AU have bad prices unless you get the ebay sales.

Ended up getting the S7 edge from here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/269991

    spewing it doesn't have an s-pen :(

  • +2

Not sure about note 7. The galaxy s7 and s7 edge have the best cameras in the market. You will be able to enleash their full potential when u use the pro mode on the camera app. With my amateur knowledge I took some pics which people mistake for professional pics.

  • -2

Note to self!!! Thank god I do not have one

  • I hope the new Galaxy S8 will have all the Note 7 features.

    • It will have everything except the pen I would assume.

    • Including the explosion feature?

  • What haappens if you pre-ordered it and got a free 256GB microSD? Do you get to keep it?

    • They got to keep everything including Spen, charger and also loaner phone.

  • -2

What's the big deal? Only half a dozen or so out of billions of the 7 have actually blown up

    • +1

Well, they haven't blown up doesn't mean they won't…

      • +2

and you've got your numerator and denominator wrong.

  • I think if they are discontinuing the Note 7, the only thing they can do now for people who bought or wanted an iPhone 7 is to offer a 64GB or 128GB version of the Note 5 for 50% off or more, and make that the base version. Since we're losing a generation of Note phones, and the prospect of buying last year's model is unexciting, they're going to have to make it very tempting with a huge price cut. And since that model has no SD card support, the highest capacity phone should become the base model.

I would go one step further and include the S7 at a massive discount. They are going to be hemorrhaging fans.

If they don't act quick to earn some good will, it will blow up in their face.

    • No you are not, but hey people still drive cars without their brakes working.

We all take risks, just some are less wise than others.

Hindsight will tell us if you were wise or foolish.

Might be interesting to explore what your legal rights are if say your house burnt down when you ignored a recall.

Samsung doesnt want to take the risk, and its a big hit to bonuses etc.

is it THAT great you want to risk your life and possibly others?

I dont know, just saying you might want to look at the bigger picture here.

      • Crazy good. I got an s7 edge, with the intention of using it as a replacement, then spent 3 hrs setting it up and ended up giving it away to the missus because it just wasn't the same :(

Thanks for the link. At least I know I won't be the only one who's house burns down because note 7.

  • Well there goes their reputation for phones at the best least. I would have to say they would have to double the power /ram at the next release to be a year ahead of everyone else to make everyone come back.

  • Have used HTC, iphones, and the the Samsung note 4 and 7 (which I have both of), were EASILY the two best phones I've ever had.
My note 7 has no problems at all. It does get hot when running games but nothing alarming.
The odds of a note 7 blowing up are like winning the lottery, but it will certainly put a lot of consumers off.

Personally I'll be very happy if this means prices will drop on Samsung phones or more features for less $$.
Will keep using my note 7 until it blows up or the note 8 comes out.

I've got the S7 edge from the GG deal, spent hours syncing apps and accounts, and every time I look at it I think of my note 7 and the s-pen which I use so much.

I'm on the fence now, should I give the S7 edge to the wife and keep using the note 7 and risk my life and hope Samsung or someone comes up with a fix or a way to identify the problem? Or do I return the note 7 and life life in fear and never use the microwave oven, drive my car and turn my meter box off at night just in case anything electronic in the house short circuits?

2 weeks with the note 7 and life just won't be the same without it. FML, talk about first world problems.

I'd really like something concrete from samdung, explaining what went wrong, why, how to identify affected units and remedy (which isn't returning it!). I would pay another $500 just to fix the problem if it meant I could continue using my note 7. :(

    • +2

What if Samsung force a software upgrade that renders the phone useless?

I love mine but I am returning it and will get the iphone 7 plus. Can't take the risk the phone explodes while my children are playing with it.

      • They have apparently done it with the first batch when the maxed out charging at 60% or so I heard. If they disable it they disable it and I'll probably go back to my note 4.

It all seems to be shrouded in secrecy at the moment and I like to base my decisions off facts. Sure the phone may explode, but so might your 18650s, eneloops, microwave oven etc. I'd like to see the official report from Samsung.

Kids don't touch my phone but yes it is semi retarded having to isolate your phone before charging it, and having to put it in the sink at night lest it spontaneously combusts while I'm asleep….

  • +5

The fact that there's people that want to keep their devices is ludicrous.

You'll never be allowed on a plane. Not just with it turned off, either - and you're risking damage to yourself, property and others around you.

Do everyone a favour and return it.

Samsung will most likely force and update and cripple your device anyway, but still.

    • -1

I just rang Jetstar whom we are going to travel with and it is ok to bring it on board as long as it is turned off and not charging!

  • It's simply a corporation trying to do damage control. Given the publicity and the frequency of the battery exploding means the product were not properly tested in the Lab long enough. It also means Samsung would be in the middle of trying to find out what causes the explosion/fire.

There'll be lots of blame going around battery manufacturer/line and Samsung.
Probably lawsuit. If there is, they'll make it really public. Just damage control "not our product it's their's"

Samsung won't go bankrupt because of a product go bust. Historically, many electronics company made dud products and still survive without a scratch. Samsung is huge, this not going to dent anything.

Though this one will always be remembered as the worst phone of all time, it kills, it causes fire and airline treats it like a b0mb.

Samsung will probably lay low for a bit and let this settle to the bottom of the sea before either creating a new line or new version of Note. Probably Call it "the NEW Note" or Note NoBomb line. LOL

  • I reckon that anyone who still has a GN7 is going to have a collectors item in a few years time

    • As time goes on the odds of it spontaneously combusting increase. ;-)

  • -1

This is predictable, I have a relative who works in Samsung factory told me that Samsung used some cheap spare parts from unknown suppliers in China and Taiwan to reduce costs and increase revenue. They are now looking for the new suppliers to replace those cheap components in the Notes. The battery is not the problem, there is nothing wrong with it. The diodes are one of the problems, Samsung has never changed the new battery, they just changed the new diode and put the battery back, that's why.

I wish LG did this with their bootlooped G4 and other G series. Ruined their reputation by offering free mainboard replacement for those who affected by bootloop

    • I had 2 G4 phones die under warranty. Not a boot loop. Dead wireless and bluetooth. This created a real mess that took weeks to sort out thanks to extended delay getting it fixed and then a manager at JB Hi Fi who cancelled my Telstra contract without permission when I pushed the issue. To fix the mess I ended up with a 3rd brand new G4 that's not locked (outright phone) and a $20/month discount on the new contract I was signed to. Good outcome but not worth all the time and effort. Won't ever touch another LG, but Samsung doubly so. At least LG didn't risk my life and property.

  • Only 1 report of injury so far, but what does this say about Samsung as a company?

Could you imagine if your Samsung fridge/washing machine/etc exploded while you were asleep and set your house on fire?

Not outside the realms of possibility.

  • Just got some insider info - Samsung employees will be at airports tomorrow transferring data and issuing loan S7 edge phones to travellers, as the note7 is now no longer allowed on planes, even powered off. This sure is costing them a bit…..

    • Do they inspect everyone's phones at air ports?

Airline passengers will not be permitted to take a Galaxy Note7 on a flight, either switched on or turned-off. No other Samsung device is affected by this ban.

Samsung Australia apologises for this inconvenience. We are working with airlines and airports in Australia to arrange customer service points within high-traffic terminals where customers, who are unaware of the Galaxy Note7 ban on flights, can arrange an alternative device at the airport.

These Samsung Australia customer service points at airports are open from 6am to 6pm (local time) and are located before security screening. These Samsung Australia customer service points can be found at:

  • With two failures in the Note 5 and Note 7 Samsung lost a what would of been lifelong customer to Apple. I had bought every Note since the first one and the requirements for me to be happy upgrading were quite low.

Samsung is finished. Their batteries have always been pretty bad - I always replaced mine in like 5 months as it kept on dying earlier than expected. When they joined in and made their batteries sealed in they lost a monumental selling point.

The final nail in the coffin is that the Note is no longer a bleeding edge amazing phone. This is obvious with the lack of 6GB RAM.

I have the iPhone 7 Plus and it's honestly three times faster in almost everything. It is by FAR the best iPhone display by leaps and bounds. The Note 8 would have to be quite superb indeed to be better.

It's really sad…. but Samsung is simply way too greedy.

    • I can understand you never buying Samsung again but I'm curious to know why you went to Apple and not another Android manufacturer?

The final nail in the coffin is that the Note is no longer a bleeding edge amazing phone. This is obvious with the lack of 6GB RAM.

How many phones have 6GB RAM and what do you intend to do with it? Doesn't iPhone only have 2GB RAM?

It's really sad…. but Samsung is simply way too greedy.

      Could you elaborate?

    • -2

From an Apple fan point of view? You didn't have to lied about buying Galaxy Note before. You probably have never used a Samsung phone before.
