28 Degrees vs Coles Rewards MasterCard for Travel Card

Hi, just wondering what is the better option of the two for a travel card? Or if anyone has any better suggestions (although Bankwest Zero Platinum is ruled out, that was my first choice but I applied and they didn't offer me the minimum $6000 credit limit for the platinum).

Just get one of those for spending and a Citibank plus for cash withdrawals.

  • why coles is good for travel? you mean just within australia or overseas? if overseas i dont understand why you have considered coles one as good?

    • +2

Because the Coles Rewards MasterCard does not have transaction fees on overseas purchases.

      • oh wow sorry didnt know this - i have both 28 and coles.
so there is reason to cancel my 28 if necessary because i can just use coles.
too much credit record is not good.
ups just read below the coles is need to be reward card and has annual fee. mine is free annual fee so maybe not good for overseas

  • Citibank plus is good.

  • There is an annual fee on the Coles card that can't be justified if you're using it only for travel purposes.
Heck even if it's used more than that it's still hard to justify.

Go with 28 Degrees if you need credit, otherwise if you have the cash you can just get a Citibank Plus as others have suggested.

Or get both and put them in different wallets/pockets/persons so you have a backup.

  • Well the 28 Degrees:
    Pros:

    • No Rewards scheme
    • no annual fee
    • 55 days interest free
    • 21.99% interest rate (both cash advance and purchases)
    • Late Fee = $20
    • Paper Statement= $2.50
    • Payment in store (aust post) = 2.50
    • Payment Online=$0.95
    • Cash Advance fee = 3% or $1.95 (whichever is greater)
    • Minimum $6000
    • Concierge and optional insurance

    Coles:

    • 2 Flybuys points per $ spent
    • $89 annual fee
    • 55 days interest free
    • 19.99% interest rate (both cash advance and purchases)
    • Late Fee = $20
    • Paper Statement= $2.00
    • Payment in store (Aust post/kmart/target) =$2.25
    • Payment Online = free
    • Cash Advance fee = 3% or $4 (whichever is greater); 1st 2 cash advances are free for new customers
    • Minimum $500
    • Concierge and purchase protection insurance (only if approved for $6000 limit)

If you don't have a rewards card, I'd go with the Coles. It's basically a 2 in 1. Flybuys don't have the best per point value; however, there are TONS of promotions (eg, buy this and get extra 500 points, or 3*, etc).

Citibank plus is great too as they won't charge you a fee when withdrawing overseas (and overseas transactions)

    • If you don't have a rewards card, I'd go with the Coles.

This sums up me. I can't be bothered chasing points, but do my weekly shopping at Coles/petrol at Coles Express, so I'm pretty ingrained in the FlyBuys system. With the 2 points per $1, the annual fee is easily covered, and the excess is a bonus I wasn't previously getting. Plus it doubles as my FlyBuys card.

I still have a 28 Degrees card as it has no annual fee, but I've stopped using it. Only kept as a backup.

      • Roughly how much do you have to spend a year to recoup the annual fee in flybuys points? Haven't considered flybuys before

        • +1

          It's $89, so that's roughly 18,000 (2000 points per $10 flybuys $).

At 2 points per $ spent, that's $9k. Probably goes through about $3k a month, so fee paid off for me in 3 months.

I also signed up with the 20,000 points bonus ($100 equivalent).

        • Just in addition to tomsco, which I also briefly mentioned above. Flybuys have tons of bonus deals (sign up to their email to take full advantage).

          This includes:
-double points if you shop a certain amount (eg, 2* total flybuys if you spend 50)
-extra points if you buy something (eg, new yoghurt for 500 points)
-bonus points with consecutive shops (1000 points if you spend $ 50 for next 2 weeks)

Plus flybuys is partnered with a lot of other companies. Atm, they have a deal with Medibank, goodlife healthclub and a few others (from the top of my head).

So you can actually gain a lot of points quickly as opposed to other types of rewards. The one thing I just found out is coles express purchases are .5 per dollar.

    • Citibank plus is great too as they won't charge you a fee when withdrawing overseas (and overseas transactions)

Just to confirm - there are no additional fees if using the Citibank Debit card for online shopping in a foreign currency? And the exchange rate is the same good rate you get for overseas ATM withdrawals?

  • +2

I have a 28 degrees card (for CC use) and a citibank card (for ATM withdrawal) that I use O/S

    • +1

      same here

      • +1

        same here

        • How are their currency exchanges?

  • Wouldn't Bankwest platinum be better?

    • Bankwest Zero Platinum is ruled out, that was my first choice but I applied and they didn't offer me the minimum $6000 credit limit for the platinum.

  • +1

Citibank Plus Account; fee free banking here in Australia including International Money Transfers and of course fee free ATM withdrawals while overseas.

    Incredible Bank Exchange Rates.

Used this card for all my overseas travel for many years.

  • So what's the ultimate? I always thought 28 degrees for credit purchases and something like a qantas card/virgin card for withdrawals? Seems like I might be wrong…

    So does that mean:

    Bankwest Zero Platinum>28 degrees card for credit purchases and;
Citibank Plus>Qantas Card/Virgin Card for cash withdrawals?

    • Personally, I think Bankwest Zero Platinum purchases + Citibank Plus for cash withdrawals is the best combo

I have the Coles card (low forex till the end of 2016 ONLY). So just check that depending under which offer you apply. Also, take screen shots of all cards T&Cs that you apply for as the offers are fungible and can move against you.

    • Yes, this. Had a similar issue with HSBC, but all sorted. Screenshot the deal so you can use it for reference

Macquarie's Platinum Transaction Account seems just as good as 28 Degrees, and it's super user friendly.

      Macquarie's Platinum Transaction Account

      Debit Card

      28 Degrees

      Credit Card

  • What's the difference between Citibank plus debit card and 28D? I'm thinking of performing overseas purchases with my Citibank debit card to avoid creating another credit card.

    • Apart from one being a debit card and the other a credit card, I'd say the only other financial difference that would effect you is that Citibank is Visa and 28D is Mastercard. There will be a bit of a difference between exchange rates due to the rates Visa and MC use, but this will probably be negligible for personal use.

      • How much difference are we looking at? Less than 0.5% I would assume?

  • Just doing a rough example for USD yesterday via the Mastercard and Visa sites, AUD$1 would buy:

    Visa: USD$0.759424

    Mastercard: USD$0.753800

    • Visa is higher :)
